He became pastor of the New Park Street Church in London as a young man 'of nineteen. Today, the lad from the parsonage stands as a leader of Christian thought. His sermons are read and studied by more preachers than those of any other minister of the ages. The Spurgeon motto is Contend for the Faith. Their society verse is jude 3: Beloved, when l gave all diligence to write unto you of the common salvation, it was needful for me to write unto you, and exhort you that ye should earnestly contend for the faith which was once delivered unto the saints. Black and white are the Spurgeon colors. Roger Williams, best known for his stand on the matter of separation of church and state, was the founder of the first Baptist church in the colonies. As an ardent advo- cate of religious freedom, he was consistently known as a fighter for the cause. The Williams' theme, We are the Victors , compliments their hymn, Faith is the vic- tory . For whatsoever is horn of God overcometh the world: and this is the victory that overcometh the world, even our faith. Dr. W.B. Riley was a great pastor, evangelist, civic leader, statesman, and author. From the beginning of his ministry he was a staunch defender of the faith basing his convictions upon the Word of God. He was pastor of the First Baptist Church in Minneapolis and founder of Northwestern Bible College. The Riley's verse is Romans 8:37: Nay, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him that loved us. Banner of the Cross is their hymn, More the Conquerors their motto. The Riley colors are gold, blue and red.
