Text from Pages 1 - 160 of the 1967 volume:

1 Symbolic of the spiritual power which emanates from the devoted Christian testimony of its student body, there stands a mighty fortress of the truth our fathers taught on the hills above the little southern Minnesota city of Owaton- na. Here, by vote of the Board of Trustees on .lanuary 26, 1957, and later ratified by the Minnesota Baptist Convention, the once Pillsbury Academy became Pillsbury Baptist Bible College, thus precipitating a chain of events ultimately to change the course of history among Baptists in the North Star state and all across the nation. 2 By unanimous action of the Board of Trustees, Dr. Ri- chard V. Clearwaters, pastor of the Fourth Baptist Church, Minneapolis, Minnesota, and chairman of the Board, was named the first president of the college. 3 On September 4. 1957, matriculation figures revealed that one hundred six students had passed through the regis- tration lines. These constituted the first student body of the new Bible College in the area. 4 Campus day was initiated during the first fall. Various duties assigned members of the student body and faculty provided a time of wholesome activity and fun. The day cli- maxed with an outdoor picnic and bonfire testimony time. 5 Dr. Monroe Parker, eminent educator, evangelist and preacher of the Word of God, arrived on campus February 5, 1958, to lake up the duties as the next president. Inaugura- tion ceremonies were held later in the year. 6 At the first Graduation Exercises held June 2, 1958, in the college chapel, eight seniors receixed the Bachelor of Arts degree. Dr. Clearwaters brought the Commencement address, Dr. B. Myron Cedarholm was the Baccalaureate speaker on Sunday afternoon, ,Iune 1. 7 Junior-Senior tradition began when the seniors laid away fruit cake forjuniors to discover. ,,3,,,, 'ie , S5152 K?? gQt 01999 s 1 ah' ' si V3 nano.. Sharing losses and yictories men learned to giye and take. Thus. they prepared through physical exercise to meet the ultimate battles of life. 10 From the yery beginning the chapel platform has been a sounding board from which haye echoed forth vibrant messages from the Word of God and concerning the issues of the day. Pillsbury's i -U third President has certainly proved to be a God-sent man. To fol- 'Q low in the steps of a great leader andbuilder of Pillsbury like Dr. Mon- ij' roe Parker is in itself a gigantic task. To perform skillfully the many E. diverse and demanding functions of acollege president and at the same if time in two brief years lead Pillsbury to an expanding enrollment where Ta it now ranks as one of the three largest Bible colleges in the nation, is J indeed to accomplish an Herculean labor. if Dr. Cedarholm was sent from God to us out ofarichbackground of ex- F perience which has so admirably fitted him for this work. A star athlete -:A at the University of Minnesota in undergraduate days, a B. D. graduate 'jf from EasternBaptist Seminary and aTh. M. degree from Princeton com- -L bined to prepare him for a spectacularly successful pastorate in Phila- if delphia. From this he was called to become the General Director of the T- infant, struggling Conservative Baptist Association of America, and 5 through an unparalleled prodigious work of eighteen years all across T: America became the one man most responsible for the phenomenal :J growth of that association, earning the title, Mr. CBA . Providentially f arranged, at the same time Pillsbury was seeking a leader, God's pre- if pared man was found in the person of Dr. Cedarholm whose previous -JT woliik had igcludedla youth ministry to many thousands in churches and 1. co eges a over t is nation. F' if Dr Cedarholm has proven him self again in these two years as an edu if cator and administrator par excellence. His evangelistic zeal, mission- ':- ary vision, local church emphasis and strong doctrinal preaching to- -IT gether with a carefully and consistently cultivated walk with God have 7- combined to endear him to students, faculty and staff alike as a leader Q both born and made and worthy of implicit trust. if We salute Dr. Myron Cedarholm, this God-sent man, thank God for -F him, assure him of our prayers, and believe that, should Christ's re- V:-, turn still encompass a number of years, under his leadership Pillsbury -If will thrust increasing hundreds of prepared soldiers of the Cross into the C. Conf1ict's final hour as we anticipate His appearance. Withgreat appre- 5 ciation and love we dedicate the Northern Light of 1967 to our God-sent 1 leader and President. ,JT AT ,. if ' - '31 Riff 5 nl- I gall pull gill m.nlI :mall m.ill L..il1 I-.ull 1-.ill l...llI pall 1-.ill 1-,i ll lqrnl r-1 ll i-.I ll r-,ull r-,ull i-,ull r-,ull i-ll r-ull ll i-n ii -1. an -1. an 5.4 an 5. nl e.nuL1nu Q.. ll -.ull-1W HI ll Hi ll an ll +4 In-.alum Il:.nIlm1lL-.nlmwllmrltll IU-wlltwl MINE ln: Ilan I'L11l'arI'rlI1:1l lfullbullliul llawhwl la-is lhillbillbiulhwilllms his lla: 'L1ll':illL1l lm: Mull .LT 5 E 5 -Q DR. PILLSBUR Y COLLEGE HYMN In southern Minnesota, ten thousand lakes of blue, On the hills of Owatonna, 'neath skies of azure hue, There stands a mighty fortress of the truth our fathers taught O God, we stand in awe of the work which Thou has wrought In ancient iveyed halls 'mid culture's pleasing graceg Within these hallowed walls our Lord shall have first place O teach us, Lord, thine inspir'd Word written by men of old Moved by Thy Holy Spirit, Dearer far than gold. Ten thousand men and demons attack our cause forsooth We're fully panoplied, girt 'round the loins with truth- Breastplate of righteousness, made ready our feet are shod With thorough preparation, the gospel of peace with God. With the mighty shield of faith we quench each fiery dartg Fill us, Holy Spirit, and ne'er from us depart. In helmet of salvation we wield the Spirit's sword, A weapon never failing, God's everlasting Word. Arise, ye sons and daughters, Pillsbury's warriors all! From jungles far away, from the town and hamlet small, Come cries of souls sinbound and doomed to endless woe, All our hearts with love aflame, Arise and to them go! X' A 4 Starting the season with a l4 to 6 vic- tory over Worthington College, the Comets were looking for big things when they met a far superior Midwest- ern team, who beat them 47 to 3. After the let-down against Midwestern, it took the Comets three more losses be- fore they got on top against Gustavus Adolphus, defeating them 14 to O. The Comets topped their season with a 41 to 6 defeat of the Mankato freshmen. 1 Rich Sherman proved to be a shifty and effective Sheldon Schearer will long be remembered for his ball carrier. powerful running against Lea College. 74 Dr. Weeks' faithful support brought inspir- ation to the hard working Comets. The competition proved to be too much for the inexperienced footmen of Pillshury's soccer team in 1966. While coming close several times, the Comets were unable to outscore their opponents during any contest of the ten game schedule. Lack- ing both an effective scoring punch from the offensive line and a defensive unit to hold off the opponents, Pillsbury scored only thirteen goals for the season while allowing 57 goals to be scored against them. Bruce Love from Brazil was an out- standing player saving 23 attempts at the goal during the Harvest Home game against Concordia College. Other men returning who can always be counted as real competitors are Dan Lindsey, Larry Livesay, Dave Denning, Mike Gordan and john Kmetz. Judith Burke read 'LHand- maid to History' based upon the life of Dolly Madison. 16 Richard Brady. instructor in music, has been presented at the piano keyboard upon several occasions. 17 Student recitals are a requirement of each major and minor in speech and music. Catherine Austin read exerpts from A Tale of Two Cities for her recital. 18 In addition to its fine performances of religious drama, the Speech Department has become recognized for its out- standing productions of Shakespeare. The first of these, 'LThe Merchant of Venicen. brought acclaim from many areas, 19 Music early became an integral part of the college cur- riculum. The College Choir was organized thc very first year under the direction off1f1r. Marvin Kanengieter. It has toured each year since its inception. The Madrigal Quire. first intro- duced in 1962. has delighted audiences in campus concerts as well as on tour by its rendition of unique arrangements designed after the early madrigals. 20 With an increasing emphasis on Christian service. it was no surprise to see engendered in the hearts of students the desire to visit the mission fields of the world. James Shaw and ,lohn Kallin visisted Haiti in the summer of 1961 and brought challenge to the student body upon their return. 21 Wholesome social life on campus has resulted in many a combination of serv ants for the cause of Christ. Bert Lessard, called to preach at Pillsbury, now continues his preparation at seminary. 23 As facilities became axailable. new sports. both intra- mural and intercollegiate. have been introduced. Faxored in the tenth year of college history has been the recently intro- duced wrestling. 24 Perhaps no athletic contest has been nor continues to be as popular as basketball. The new gymnasium made possi- ble the accomodation of many outside visitors as well as the entire student body. 25 Spring College Days have provided opportunity for hundreds of visitors to observe faculty and students in action on the college facilities. 26 Harvest Home in the fall brings many visitors who as- sist with provisions for the college family. Special programs include presentations by the Departments of Music and Speech. 27 Graduation. 1966, was a joyous occasion when at the close of his first academic year as third president of the col- lege. Mrs. Harriet Bratrud, long time friend of the college, outstanding Christian leader and board member, was awarded a doctorate in Humanities. thus becoming the first woman to receive an honorary degree from Pillsbury College. 28 Now in its tenth year Pillsbury College continues to expand the campus facilities by dedicating its second new dormitory.
