In this hallowed building we have spent some of the happiest moments of our lives. We remember those days that seemed would never end, and those which flew by so quickly. We remember each desk with its names carved or written on every inch of spaceg and the blackboards where all our knowledge was at one time writteng and the halls, where by the radiators fif only they could talkj many hours of cou.rting have been spent. rfafrlwlflaw We look forward to the future with high hopes and dreams of much success in all our undertakings. It is a future made brighter and more prosperous by our education here at Pikeville. We look to a better future and better education for our children through the new school, Charles B. Aycock High School, which will begin operation next year fPicture of the school abovej. 3 yn X 2

may In this, THE PITCHFORK of 1961, we, the Senior Class, present a picture of our Today, our school year. We glimpse back nostalgically and think of our years at Pikeville. This year marks the last of many years as a high school at Pikeville. May we look on this day as one of joy and satisfaction that we have helped make this school a little bit better. .-l'9'f- f HOME ECONOMICS BUILDING - S ew ing machines and model kitchens are the order of the day in this building. This is the birthplace ofmany fine future homemakers who learn their occupations here. Mrs. Bloomer is the boss here, and her cries in that unforgettable German accent ring out through the day. 1 fawf., V ,,-,..,gv ,fy , ,.,.WQ,, rgf' 7 4917 1. . gf' W U ,, '-'-,'.., .,' I W 47 S eff ff 'E . A variety of good meals is placed before us each day by the excellent cooks under the supervision of Mrs. Sullivan. PRIMARY BUILDING - In this building in September of 1949, the school career of many of us began. This building is the home of the first grades, second grade, and third grade. Also, in this building many hours of hard practice have been put in by many of our Seniors who played basketball, for in here is also the gym- nasium. Wav I AGRICULTURE BUILDING - Sawdust and scrap wood are familiar sights in here, but don't fret, they don't stay there long. Mr. C room always keeps that stop Spic 'n' Span. The ways of a good farmer have been learne d by many here under the excellent supervision of Mr. Croom. up ' A 1 -wffyv X - . . , 2. rf If ,.,,' 1 ll' ' If K- ' 5 r'A Q ' P. 2 IWW! wnrlitanlgs INTRODUCTION 1 MEMORLAM 4 FACULTY AND ADMINISTRATION 5 SENIORS 9 SUPERLATIVES 17 JUNIORS 21 soPHoMoREs 25 FRESHMEN 29 FEATURES ss ACTIVITIES 37 SPORTS 45 scHooL LIFE 49 ELEMENTARY GRADES 53 ADVERTISEMENTS 59 EEE l ,L 1 1 1, ,4 . Many other things will also be remembered about Silas: his joking ways, always making others happy, his moments of deep sincerity, his efforts to make the best, better, that shock of hair that never seemed to stay in place, his sly laugh, and special things of remembrance which are personal to each of us. May we use his life as a model and make our life better. NANCY I can see her now as she stood before the easel with her paint blotched apron and those ringlets, each falling in its special place. Yes, Nancy was quite an artist and an honor student, too. I-Ier happy life came to a watery end as she and her sister, Paula jean, were drowned in Lake Waccamaw. BILLY We are re m inde d of a bouncing, typical boy when we think of Billy, with his touselled blonde hair and angelic smile. His mischievous ways are remembered in a happy way. Little did we realize, as we left school the last day in the first grade, that it would be the last time we would see Billy, for that afternoon he was electrocuted on an electric fence. 74
