Patricia Gardner leaves her ability to skip up street without getting caught to Carol Lee. Esther Kearney leaves her loudness to Jean Smith. Jack Sasser leaves the title of Most Conceited to Richard Woodard. Betsy Grantham leaves her flirty eyes to anyone who is sharp enough to catch them. Ed Crawford leaves his faded basketball suit to anyone who wants it. Abbie Forehand leaves his slimness to Tom Smith. Shelby Bass leaves Mr. Fornecker to anybody who wants him in study hall. the future Seniors we leave the pleasure of having Miss Barwick as their Sponsor. the Sophomores we leave the pleasure of preparing for a good Junior-Senior Banquet. the Freshmen we leave our best wishes, hoping they will enjoy their high school days. the faculty we leave our appreciation for teaching us throughout our high school days. Hicks leaves his seat at Summer School to Cordell Sasser. Donnie House and Carol Kearney leave all the Air Force boys at Seymour Johnson Field to all the girls who are lucky enough to catch them. Carlton Crumpler leaves his basketball suit to Tommy Pate. Frankie Tillman leaves his ability to work as a carpenter for Mr. Russell to Ray Hare. Margaret Peedin leaves her height to Hazel McCandless. Bryant Lancaster leaves his ability to eat barbecue chicken to anyone who is sly enough to slip after it Nellie Deans, Rowena Gurganus, and Hazel Wade leave their ability to do anything they want to do without getting caught, to anyone who is lucky and brave enough to do it. Susan Cooke leaves her ability to slip out of study hall to anyone who can get away with caught. Durwood Deaver leaves his Red crew-cut to Robert Jones. Effie Lancaster leaves her position as Head Cheerleader to Anne Elmore. Lindsay Scott leaves his love to a certain blonde Freshman. Frances Howell leaves her quietness to Linda Pate. History Back in the fall of 1954, we became Freshmen at Pikeville High. We were entering a new world, a world that seemed strange and even frightening to most of us. We, no doubt made many mistakes at first, but the combined guidance of our sponsors, Miss Betty West and Miss Dorothy Fitzgerald and understanding of our principal Mr. Grady I. Carriker set us on our path and gave us inspiration. Several of us played basketball and baseball on the varsity and Junior Varsity teams and did well under Coach John Britt. Many of us were initiated into the FFA and FHA and some of our girls won their Junior Homemakers Degree. Then we were Sophomores and felt At Home in High School. We were still separated with Miss Theresa Rabil as the girls sponsor and Mr. Irving Fornecker as boy's sponsor. That year we contributed still more players to the Pikeville Cage team. Mr. R. C. Russell became our principal and no doubt relieved us of many of our re- sponsibilities and troubles. Then, all too quickly came our Junior Year and the responsibility of beinga Junior. This was our first year together as a class and we had to realize the really big job ahead of us. Under the supreme guidance of our sponsor Mrs, Robert Whaley, we started to work rais- ing the money we would need. With our class together and with Ed. Crawford as president we ordered Christmas Cards, Stationery, candy and we even collected tobacco and sold it at a local market. On March 29th we presented a three act comedy entitled Winning Schemer which was an overwhelming success Our reward for this work and worry came on May 10, l957 when we gave our Junior- Senior Banquet at the Moose Hall in Wilson. With a Hawaiian Feast as a theme and with great entertainment and delicious food, our banquet was enjoyed by all. We were also honored to have Effie Mae Lancaster and Lillie Sasser win their State Homemaker's De- gree. Seven of our classmates were also initiated into the National Beta Club. They were Ruby Davis, Lillie Sasser, Pat Gardner, Sue Cooke, Carl Tyndall, Nettie Hollis and Nancy Pipkin. Now we are in our final year at PHS, Seniors of 1958. lt's funny how the years have passed and to realize where they've gone. With Miss Barwick as our sponsor and with her enduring patience and love we have made this year what we have always dreamed it would be. Our Washington trip will never be forgotten and we are still wonder- ing how our chaperones Miss Barwick and Mr. Clifton Pipkin main- tained such patience with us. We want to thank Mrs. Pate for her assistance and supervision on the annual. Without her we could have never had one. With our class rings on our fingers and a song in our heart we are looking forward to that final night when we will receive that long awaited diploma. Carl Tyndall Historian 17
