We were entering a new world, a world that seemed strange and even frightening to most of us. We, no doubt made many mistakes at first, but the combined guidance of our sponsors, Miss Betty West and Miss Dorothy Fitzgerald and understanding of our principal Mr. Grady I. Carriker set us on our path and gave us inspiration. Several of us played basketball and baseball on the varsity and Junior Varsity teams and did well under Coach John Britt. Many of us were initiated into the FFA and FHA and some of our girls won their Junior Homemakers Degree. Then we were Sophomores and felt At Home in High School. We were still separated with Miss Theresa Rabil as the girls sponsor and Mr. Irving Fornecker as boy's sponsor. That year we contributed still more players to the Pikeville Cage team. Mr. R. C. Russell became our principal and no doubt relieved us of many of our re- sponsibilities and troubles. Then, all too quickly came our Junior Year and the responsibility of beinga Junior. This was our first year together as a class and we had to realize the really big job ahead of us. Under the supreme guidance of our sponsor Mrs, Robert Whaley, we started to work rais- ing the money we would need. With our class together and with Ed. Crawford as president we ordered Christmas Cards, Stationery, candy and we even collected tobacco and sold it at a local market. On March 29th we presented a three act comedy entitled Winning Schemer which was an overwhelming success Our reward for this work and worry came on May 10, l957 when we gave our Junior- Senior Banquet at the Moose Hall in Wilson. With a Hawaiian Feast as a theme and with great entertainment and delicious food, our banquet was enjoyed by all. We were also honored to have Effie Mae Lancaster and Lillie Sasser win their State Homemaker's De- gree. Seven of our classmates were also initiated into the National Beta Club. They were Ruby Davis, Lillie Sasser, Pat Gardner, Sue Cooke, Carl Tyndall, Nettie Hollis and Nancy Pipkin. Now we are in our final year at PHS, Seniors of 1958. lt's funny how the years have passed and to realize where they've gone. With Miss Barwick as our sponsor and with her enduring patience and love we have made this year what we have always dreamed it would be. Our Washington trip will never be forgotten and we are still wonder- ing how our chaperones Miss Barwick and Mr. Clifton Pipkin main- tained such patience with us. We want to thank Mrs. Pate for her assistance and supervision on the annual. Without her we could have never had one. With our class rings on our fingers and a song in our heart we are looking forward to that final night when we will receive that long awaited diploma. Carl Tyndall Historian 17 What Holds the Future Having spent those twelve miserable years of school and working in Washington for about two years I decided to take a little cruise back down and around Pikeville. I was real anxious to learn what position those spoiled schoolmates of mine had taken in life. I had my radio on and the ballgame was blasting away. Alton Daw has become the star player for the Milwaukee Braves. The C and F Service Station is Goldsboro's most modern. Owned and operated by Carlton Crumpler and Johnny Futrelle. It seems that Uncle Sam has some high-ranking men working for him. Among these are Frankie Tillman, Air Force, I. J. Mozingo, Army, and Durwood Deaver, Navy. Lindsay Scott, Pharmacist, is doing great taking over Mr. Hicks' place as owner of the Pike- ville Drug Store. Hollywood is raving over its latest actor, Ray Hicks. Carl Tyndall is our only doctor and guess who's his nurse? Esther Kearney. Why that figures. There's three that didn't get enough school their twelve years. They're still at it. Ed Craw- ford is at Wake Forest. Sue Cooke is in college for the purpose of being a Major of English and a Doctor of Psychology. Keith Horne is also in college. Byrant Lancaster is a successful merchant and farmer. Lillie Sasser is the owner of the biggest Dress Shop in town. She has all the latest fashions. I hear Betty Person is the proud mother of twins. I guess she has a full-time job. Out of our class came a number of secretaries, Among these are Nellie Deans, Hazel Wade, Cegerna Gutley, Ruby Davis, Betsy Grantham, Patricia Gardner, Carol Kearney and Edna Earle Sauls, who is secretary for an animal doctor. It looks like you did some good, Miss Rabil. Cuyler Best is busy setting up his own business. I know he will do good. I understand Bill Dees has become famous as a pilot. Someone told me Effie Mae Lancaster is reaching the top in medical work. We also have a new beauty salon in town. It was set up by Shelby Bass, Margaret Peedin and Donnie House, successful beauticians. Janet Pate makes a good elementary teacher as well as a housewife. Nettie Hollis and Nancy Pipkin are busy tending to the sick. They are our favorite nurses. lheard Jack Sasser comes through Pikeville once a week. He makes a very good electrical engineer. Who's that doing as near nothing as possible. It's Abbie Forhand, of course. Francis Herring stays on the road all the time. He's a truck driver, Henry Jinette is doing good as the only lawyer from the class. And what about Miss Barwick? I bet she's teaching at Pikeville High School. Keep her as long as you can. She can't be beat.
