To the future Seniors we, 4 time winners of the March of Dimes, and producers of some of the best plays leave a goal of which we are proud. To the Sophomores we leave our ability to skip without getting caught. To the Freshmen we leave our quiet, intellectual ways. we leave the faculty sighing in relief. To the next basketball coach, we leave our sympathies, and possibly a better basketball team. Ralph Howell leaves his intelligence to Carl Tyndall. Peggy Pate leaves her seat in 5th period study hall to anyone who wants it. Virginia Crumpler leaves her position as Co-Captain of the basketball team to Linda Pate. Sue Gardner leaves her silliness to Janet Pate. Arthur Ivey leaves shortness to Edward Gurley. Her love for shorthand is left to I ean Smith--Compliments of Sara Pate. Billy Herring leaves Jerry Elmore and Ray Hare fighting over his basketball suit, Gail Lancaster fwould like, tc leave her personality.--? Bobbie Crocker should leave the faculty in peace, but instead the dirty rat leaves another Crocker. Curtis Howell, CLASS PEST, leaves the title to Frankie Tillman. Helen Elks leaves her 4-H work to anyone who WANTS it. That Little Boy Douglas Davis leaves his cuteness to Ed Crawford. Betty Best leaves Mr. Fornecker praising the day! Byrle Carraway would like to leave his National Guard helmet to somebody, but Uncle You-Know- Who thinks he ought to keep it awhile. Barbara Edwards leaves her slightly used man-trap to Joan Crumpler. Boy, this one needs improve- ment! Dora Edwards leaves IJ .---temporarily. Donald Hicks leaves his 12 years of misery to Francis Herring. Arnold Jones leaves his wittiness to Bryant Lancaster. Mary Ellen Davis leaves her used books to the Seniors of 1967. Bobby Sasser leaves his slide rule to Bill Dees. Don't flash it in geometry, buddy. Ada Wiggs leaves her seat in homeroom to Effie Lancaster. JoAnn Brain Tillman leaves her cartoonist pen to Chubby Kearney. Peggy Lancaster leaves her love for Nahunta to anyone who can get it. Barbara Tucker leaves . . . hogtied. These poor, miserable family women. Jane Sasser leaves . . . and, in so doing, leaves the other girls a chance with the boys. I.R. Crumpler will be satisfied with just leaving. JIMMY FUTRELLE TESTATOR 15 From the Post Most of us will never forget our first day as Freshmen in September, 1953. Mr. Grady Carriker, our principal for the first two years, helped us in many different ways. His kind and loving guidance was a part that led us to where we are today. We were separated that year with Miss Dorothy Fitzgerald as the girls' sponsor and Miss Betty West as the boys' sponsor. A majority of our members were initiated into the FHA and FFA . Some of our girls earned their Junior Homemakers Degree. Several were on the bas- ketball teams, and they did very well under Miss Barwick's and Mr. Holliday's supervision. In our Sophomore year Mrs. Ginn was the girls' sponsor and Mr. John Britt was the boys' sponsor. We were glad to know that we were not freshmen any more, but we welcomed the lower class as part of high school. That year nine of us were initiated into the Beta Club. They were Jessie Anderson, Betty Best, Alice Davis, Gail Lancaster, Jane Sasser, Jo Ann Tillman, Jimmy Futrelle, Curtis Howell, and Bobby Sasser. Mr. John Britt was the coach for both basketball teams. Our Junior year came quickly, and we were faced with many responsibilities that go with being a Jun- ior. Mr. R.C. Russel became our principal. We made many mistakes, but with Mr. Russel's guidance we see now how we have gained by them. This was the first year that we were all together as a class. With our class sponsor, Mrs. Vernon Bryan, we started to work raising money. We sold everything from Christmas cards to stationery, and we even tied tobacco! Our reward for all this work came on May 4, 1956. We had a very beautiful and impressive Junior-Senior Banquet at the Cherry Hotel in Wilson. We also gave a very successful Junior Play which was entitled Aunt Samanthy Rules the Roost . Mr. Robert Spencer was the coach for the girls' and boys' basketball teams. We had a very interesting trip to Goldsboro for Junior Career Day. Three more members of our class were initiated into the Beta Club. They were Dora Edwards, Lindora Ginn, and J .R. Crumpler, Gail Lancaster, Jane Sasser, and Helen Elks earned the State Homemakers Degree, the highest degree in FHA . Several more of the girls are looking forward to re- ceiving theirs this year. We also enjoyed our trip to Greenville to observe college life at East Carolina College. And now is our final year at Pikeville High School, .the year we have been looking forward to for so long. We began by electing officers for the class. They are: J.R. Crumpler, President, Peggy Pate, Vice President, Jessie Anderson, Secretaryg and Gail Lancaster, Treasurer. One of our nicest memories of this year was when we received our beautiful class rings. Our class sponsor, Miss Barwick, has made this year everything we thought it should be. She has helped us in all our problems. She helped us in every way she possibly could toward raising money which we need for our Washington trip and for spon- soring the annual. We want to extend our thanks, also, to Miss Wilson for helping us on the annual. It would be hard to count the hours she spent supervising the work on it. We had a very pleasant trip to the Ice Capades. Again, we had a very successful play, The Funny Brats , under the guidance of Miss Barwick. During our high school years, there have been many of our class members on the basketball teams. They are Bobbie Crocker, Virginia Crumpler, Helen Elks, Curtis Howell, Billy Herring, J .R. Crumpler, Ray Howell, Arnold Jones, and Bobby Sasser. They have done a very fine job and we are proud of them. We are looking forward to our Washington trip in April and then the J unior-Senior Banquet which will be in our honor. And then the final night when we will receive that diploma we have worked for so long! Gail Lancaster Historian V16 Into the Future Having served my stretch at Pikeville High Prison and enjoyed a few years of nursing, I got curious a bout my old inmates--wondering if they went straight after their release. I was careful not to get to close to the prison but I managed to see some of my old cronies. Bar- bara Tucker, Sara Pate, Lindora Ginn, Mary Ellen Davis, and Ada Wiggs were married and had a right nice crop of younguns. A hospital had sprung up and Betty Best, Alice Davis, and Peggy Combs were on the staff of nurses. Peggy Lancaster, a nurse also, was there--with her seventh. Gail Lancaster, X-ray technician, was busy onacivil engineer from State. I hear that's about all she does nowadays. Curtis Howell is Pikevi1le's top CPA with Jo Ann Tillman working as his secretary. They fight every day over her salary. Jane Sasser is a warden for the young convicts at Pl-IS. She just couldn't get enough. I understand Billy Herring is the leading doctor and the name Big Bill' just fits him. Virginia Crumpler is working with the Civil Service and enjoys being a doctor's wife. LR. Crumpler, State Governor, has as his secretary Jessie Anderson. Ralph Howell hasn't been around these parts lately. He's the hottest thing since Elvis Presley' and spends his time running around in Pir1k Cadillacs. I see his talent has improved. Byrle Carraway won the race on the Wilson Speedway 1301j. Carter clocked him at 95. Sue Gardner turned out to be our only beautician and I hear she's good. Arnold Jones and Bobby Sasser are doing plenty of 'nothing' by just loafing around Patetown. They told me Peggie Pate and Barbara Edwards are private secretaries and both have it made with the b0SS I stopped at the new drug store in Patetown and talked with Jimmy Putrelle who is an accountant for Dupont. He told me Ray Howell was coming home soon. Ray is a general in the Air Force and Wayne County is celebrating with a big parade. Dora Edwards and Donald Hicks joined us. Dora sure looked good in her uniform. She 's an airline hostess for TWA. The new airlines in this vicinity have really helped business. Donald told me he is editing the newspaper with Douglas Davis filling in the obituaries. Doublas, a licensed embalmer, is busy planting people. Arthur Ivey, Congressman for the 5th district, still remembers his friends by a trip down this way every now and then. Helen Elks decided to work with 4-l-ler's and I hear she 's to be married soon. I asked about Miss Barwick, our senior sponsor, and they tell me she's finally won an Oscar. Oh me! What's that? The alarm clock! Gosh, if only dreams could come true!
