Founder ' s Day ' 78 Honors Alma Culton The annual Founder ' s Day celebration began on Thursday, October 5, 1978, at 11 a.m. The Pikeville High School Flag and Rifle Squad conducted an impressive flag-raising ceremony which was conclud- ed with trumpteers playing the Star Spangled Banner after President Jackson O. Hall raised the flag. At 12:30 p.m. a luncheon took place in the Gold Room of Wickham-Memorial Hall. Guests of Miss Alma Culton, candidate for the honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degree, numbered about 60. Guests, faculty, administrators, and students gathered in Faith Chapel for the Founder ' s Day Convo- cation. Professor Bill McCloud served as organist for the ceremony. The Concert Choir, Russell Patterson directing, presented the choral call to worship and an anthem. College Board of Trustees Chairman, Wilfred S. Martin, gave the pastoral call to worship and Rev. Ben Sheldon, pastor of the First Presbyterian Church, read the Assurance of Pardon. Campus Minister, Rev. Dr. Roger Keller, gave the sermon, entitled Past, Present, and Reality. Dr. Marie V. Tarpey presented Miss Culton for the honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degree, which was conferred by President Hall. Trustee Lon B. Rogers offered prayers for the college and the Convocation closed with Dr. Culton giving the benediction. Following the Convocation the Student Government Association sponsored a canoe race and picnic. The race began behind the college gym and consisted of a four-person team, two at a time, canoeing to the Middle Bridge and back. First place winners were Mark Harlow, Bruce Brown, Russell Patterson, and Mark McCoy. Second place went to Greg Keene, Dennis Coleman, John Ford, and Kenny Cantrell. Third place honors were captured by Mike Pierce, Paul Rader, Bruce Hehl, and Scott Lemon. Friday afternoon registration and a reception was held in the Gold Room for out-of-town alumni and former faculty and staff. The college ' s Center for Continuing Education presented South From Hell- Fer-Startin at 7:30 p.m. The Student Government Association sponsored a dance Friday night at Green Meadows Country Club. Music was provided by Manatee. Saturday ' s activities began with the dedication of the Thomas H. Harmon House. Mrs. Helen Babel hosted an open house from 2:30-5:00.
