It IS with sincere humility and appreciation that we dedicate this, our 1959 Highlander, to our president, DR. A. A. PAGE. MH PPJiMMMMMMMil --I .««Mii| if 1 r:f . BiiniiW ' -. Within this circle there are half-a-million people not served by another four-year college. And yet their need for one is as great if not greater than that of any region of comparable size in the United States. The need for teachers, for trained and responsible Christian citizens, for competent professional men and women, is a critical one, for educational facilities have not kept pace with the demands of a rapidly growing population. THE CHAPEL Pikeville College not only outlines a Christian pro- gram— Pikeville College is a Christian program. Regular daily worship in the Chapel is a vitally important part of the student ' s life at Pikeville College. Here in the crowded pews many find that which they have searched for all their lives— Christ. Here in the Chapel, the students come in contact with the finer things of life, including: good music, art, drama, lectures, ser- mons, and special types of entertainment. The Chapel is really the heart of Pikeville College. PAGE DEAN HOOVER DEAN DAAARON The unique function of the small church-related col- lege is not only to give instruction in academic subjects, but to give the kind of training in moral and spiritual values that are difficult to attain on a large college or university campus. Pikeville College is small enough that it can give in- dividual attention to the student in the classroom and in the various campus activities. It is our sincere hope that as students receive their degrees from this college that they will be better citizens in the communities in which they make their homes because they attended a college that not only had an academic emphasis, but tried to develop the spiritual and moral values of life as well. FACULTY Education forms the common mind, just as the twig is bent, the tree ' s inclined. College is the time when we decide what we are going to make of our lives. This time, above all others, is the time when we need someone ' s help and guidance. These are our wonderful faculty members who have been both helpers and friends. These are the people who give us the spirit with which we sing our ALAAA MATER Gather ' round, ye loyal schoolmates; Lift each voice till echoes ring. Loudly praise our Alma Mater; ' Tis of Pikeville C we sing. And in deepest care or sorrow; Should we pause to think of thee; Strong our hearts once more. As in days of yore. When we sing of our loyalty. Orange and Black, we hail thee; Ever thy praises sing. Oh, see our colors that stand for Honor And to us victory bring. Orange and Black forever, We hail thee, far and near; On the field or in the hall. We will answer the call. For we love thee. Our College Dear. 26 ' m . FAYE GIBSON ALLEN Music B.M., M.A. HENRY C. In order to promote the traditions of Pikeville College, the Council sponsored the largest Homecoming Program in the History of the College. With the aid of campus organizations, the H omecoming Dance and the Homecoming Parade were very successful. Especially noteworthy was the Homecoming Parade. In representing student opinion, a committee from the Council met with the College Workshop Committee to discuss some ideas brought before the Council by workshop students. Helping with Freshman Orientation, revising the Constitution, and sponsoring a Second Semester Mixer have been other projects in the Student Council ' s list of activities for 1959-1960. The Council, for the first time, has an officer in the Kentucky-Tennessee Region of United States National Student Association. 100 STUDENT COUNCIL DONNA DESKINS President SHALIAAAR CLARK Secretary FRANK ALLARA Vice-President DEAN HOOVER Advisor STELLA ELK INS Advisor 101 CHRISTIAN FELLOWSHIP 102 STUDENT CHRISTIAN ADVISORY COUNCIL First row Beverly Curtis, Peggy Ford, Miss Culton, Advisor; Faye Farley, Carolyn Pierce, Rochella Thorn- bury.
