They found a body of sturdy and self-reliant men and v omen, many of them descendants of the pioneers who crossed the mountain ranges shortly after the American Revolution. The greatest need they found among the people of these hills was for a school, and it was largely due to their efforts, supported by the presbytery, that the Pikeville Collegiate Institute was opened in the fall of 1889. This changed the destiny of this area more than anything else that has happened here. The college has grown until it now more than fulfills the vision of its founders in meeting the educational and spiritual need of this once isolated mountain area. From a campus of three acres with one building, to one of twenty-two acres with more than nineteen buildings and a 1 ,000 acre farm; from a faculty of one, to a faculty of thirty-three; from a student body of three to one of more than 500; the college continues to expand its influences for God and country in these lovely hills and pleasant valleys peopled by some of the finest stock of men in these United States. Therefore, we, the students of Pikeville College, with grateful hearts and deep appreciation for our college, do humbly dedicate this record of our college year, the 1957 Highlander, to the memory of the three Presbyterian ministers. Dr. W. C. Condit, Dr. Samuel B. Alderson and Dr. James P. Hendricks, who chose Pikeville, Kentucky, as site for a college. Regular daily worship service in the Chapel is a vitally important part of the student ' s life at Pikeville College. Here in the crowded pews many find that which they have searched for all their lives-Christ. Here in the Chapel, the students come in contact with the finer things of life, including: good music, art, drama, lectures, sermons, and special types of entertainment. The Chapel is really the heart of Pikeville College. X WORSHIP ON A KENTUCKY HILLSIDE Located in the heart of the Kentucky Mountains, and easily accessible to Virginia, West Virginia and Tennessee, Pikeville College has a special intellectual and Christian nnission. This nnission it seeks to fulfill through particular, expressed purposes, which are: (1). to develop Christian character; (2). to lay a sound foundation for broad culture; (3). to offer an opportunity for higher education to the youth of this vicinity at a reasonable cost; (4). to increase the efficiency of the public schools in the sphere of its influence; (5). to provide leadership in all areas of life in the entire American community. In every phase of college life, Pikeville students are guided by Chris- tian Principles. -r Mfi ' ii ' liiiMrihiiii ,..-.. ■■■JA ;:■.■„.,:. , Ml!f-.a. Within this circle there are half-a-million people not served by another four-year college. And yet their need for one is as great if not greater than that of any region of comparable size in the United States. The need for teachers, for trained and responsible Christian citizens, for competent professional men and women, is a critical one, for edu- cational facilities have not kept pace with the demands of a rapidly growing population. WALKER Bluefield, West Virginia £mer tus xs PRESIDENT This is a historic year for Pikeville College. As we go into the expanded program of a full four-year college, may we not forget that you, the stu- dents, are the college. Naturally we want to be a great college— and we can be through you. To assure college greatness through you, I would advise you in the words of Phillip Brooks-. Do not pray for an easy life. Pray to be stronger men: Do not pray for tasks equal to your powers, Pray for powers equal to your tasks; Then the doing of your work shall be no miracle, But you shall be a miracle; Everyday you will wonder at yourself. At the richness of life Which has come to you by the grace of God. Hiiji .. DEAN A wise man once said, A chain is only as strong as its weakest link. By the same token, a college is as strong as the students who go out from its halls. We believe that this year of 1956-1957 has been a historic year for the College, and for you as well. But the real value of the year, and whatever was done, will be measured by what you all do in the future. It is our earnest prayer, as you go out from Pikeville College, or as you read these lines in later years, that you will have gained some lasting spiritual and educational good here. Then will Pikeville College continue to be great, as it makes its real contribution to the world through each of you. May God ' s richest blessing go with you all. (3Me 5 iNj kX t .V ETHEL BEEM, A.B. Moving from a Junior College into the Senior Program brings forth the expan- sion of academic materials necessary for a successful institution of higher learning for our mountain section of Eastern Kentucky. Along with the subject matter growth our intramural and intercollegiate athletics also must take their steps forward. In order to become a member of a Senior College Conference we must maintain at least three and preferably four sports in our athletic program. In fulfillment of these requirements we plan to keep our basketball on the same high level as it was in the Junior College field, where we were in the Kentucky finals eight of the last nine years and meanwhile were setting 19 of the 30 all time Junior College records. Closely following basketball are baseball, tennis and golf. Track will be added when available facilities are at our disposal. Our first Senior College schedule in athletics started this year and we are looking forward to our initial conference year as we graduate our first senior class Coach THE BEARS Left to right: Jack Stevens, Millard Bevins, Charles Francis, R.
