TO PRESBYTERIAN WOMEN The opportunity of Pikeville College to serve the mountain area of Eastern Kentucky has been made even greater by the generous gift of the women of the Presbyterian Church. This gift will make possible the building of our new and much-need ed chapel. There in the uncrowded pew, in the quiet inspirational moments of each chapel program, we will bow our heads in grateful thanks. This gift that you call an Opportunity Gift has truly been a double one— it was your opportunity to further the Kingdom of God through Christian education, and it will be our opportunity as a four-year college to spread the great benefits of a Christian education throughout all of Eastern Kentucky. Therefore, we, the students of Pikeville College, with grateful hearts and deep appreciation for the opportunity that has been given to us, humbly dedicate this record of our college year, the 1956 Highlander, to the Women of the Presbyterian Church in the United States of America. May God bless each one of you. ADMINISTRATION AND FACULTY BOARD OF TRUSTEES REV. SAMUEL R. CURRY Chairman WILLIAM J. BAIRD Secretary NORMAN A. CHRISMAN Treasurer A. A. EMERITUS Jt PRESIDENT You will find that your Highlander will grow in value as the years go by because it will be the means of keeping college days and friendships fresh in your memory. My sincere wish for you is that you will continue to grow both intellectually and spiritually. If you do this, you will lead a happy and useful life and always be a worthy representative of Pike- ville College. ETHEL BEEM Secretary BARBARA CONN Secretary RALPH T. KILGORE Business Manager i DEAN Most of us circumscribe ourselves unnecessarily. We run on two cylinders instead of eight; we plod where we might run; we run where we might fly. We stake off a very small section of life, and hobble our futures by expecting and accepting too little of life ' s possibilities. If college teaches you nothing else, it will have accomplished its purpose if you have learned that success in anything comes through hard and persistent effort. From this point on, the sky is the limit. Sooner or later, a person can do whatever he wants to do, if he really wants to do it. The prayers of all of us on the faculty go with each one of you, that you will make the great contribution to life and society of which each of you are capable. As Dr. Page occasionally quotes Phillips Brooks in chapel: Do not pray for easy lives. Pray to be strong men. Do not pray for tasks equal to your powers, but powers equal to your tasks. Then the doing of your work will be no miracle. But you shall be a miracle. Every day you shall wonder at yourself, at the richness of life which has come in you by the grace of God. As the great Apostle Paul said, Be on the watch. Stand firm in your faith. Act like men. Show yourselves strong. Do everything with love. The Chapel is really the Heart of our school, for it is here that the students come in contact with the finer things of life; including Music, Art, Drama, Lectures, Sermons, and special types of entertainment. At the beginning of each year we have what is known as Spiritual Emphasis Week. During this week, there is a speaker who brings inspiring messages both morning and evening. This year our speaker was Doctor Paul Gauze from St. Petersburg, Florida.
