Cabaret The scene is Berlin 1930 just before New Year's Eve, when we are welcomed by the Cabaretfs master of cere- monies tBruce Kluger, Marc Plattl. The story begins with American novelist Cliff Bradshaw fCary Phoebusl who upon taking the advice of Ernest Ludvig tDavid Sellmanl rents a room at the lodgings of Fraulein Schneider fSara Raskinj. Cliff declines an invitation to spend New Year's Eve with Fraulein Schneider and her admirer l-lerr Schultz tRobert Crosshandlerl, a jewish fruit shop owner, and instead spends a night at the Kit Kat Klub, where he meets the club's star attraction, Sally Bowles tRobin Millerl. The next day, Sally, after being thrown out of her apartment, appears at Cliff's door asking for a place to live. Cliff, enchanted by Sally, allows her to stay. Sally proves to be too great a distraction and Cliff's writing falls behind, caus- ing their money situation to become desperate. Upon learning that Sally is pregnant, Cliff decides he must get a job and Ernst informs him of the prospect of taking brief trips to Paris for political reasons. While Cliff is away, Sally learns of the engagement between Herr Schultz and Frau- lein Schneider and gives a party in their honor. All the guests are entertained by Fraulein Kost tLois Sommersl, another boarder at Fraulein Schneider's, as she sings of the power of the new generation. As the strength of the Nazi party grows, Fraulein Schneider realizes she cannot marry Herr Schultz and breaks off the engagement. Cliff, too, sees he cannot remain in Germany and makes plans for him and Sally to leave for America at once. Sally, however, refuses and informs Cliff of her recent abortion, and of her deci- sion to stay at the Kit Kat Klub. Cliff, seeing the decadence of society, knows he must leave her and Berlin. Tomorrow belongs to me. ca ba ret 49
