The money for this scholarship was raised by their Dollars for Scholars Dance held last fall. The Hi-Y membership consists of boys in the last three grades of high school, It is founded on the same basis as the Tri-Iii-Y, with community service as its major purpose, The club also sponsors a spring Dance each year. Not only does this give them experience in the mechanics ofprinting but also teaches them the techniques of reporting. This work is a good background for future work on a newspaper staff. Those -1-ll members who are 14 yea:-s of aue and have been in 4-ll for at least two years may be chosen for Junior Leaders if they show outstanding characteristics ofleadership. The part they play is a bio, oneg helping the adult leaders, giving demonstrations, and making visits to the homes of young 4-ll members. Every year the Junior leaders at Pike sponsor a homecoming float. unior Lenders All boys who are interested in becoming future farmers may join the Future Farmers of America. The purpose is to stimulate interest in farming and provide a chance for these boys to show their farming ability. Most of these boys have already distinguished themselves in some form of judging, in County, State or Nation. New this year, the Science Club was formed for those students who were interested in learning from scientists in the community and fathers who are proficient in a related field. They have split into groups of which chemistry, landscaping, and photography are just a few examples. The purpose is to encourage sportsmanship in the school sports and they are currently sponsoring a project to earn money for a pitching machine for summer baseball. The club wants to make it an honor to wear a letter sweater. Our beautiful new library presents quite a largeproblem for our librarian but her load is lessened by the aid of these student librarians. It acts as a legislative body over changes to be made and gives each class's opinions on new ideas brought before the members. Every year the American Legion and theAmerican Legion Auxiliary sponsor boys and girls to Hoosier Boy's State and Hoosier Gir1's State. Thepurpose is to give them a chance to find out how our State Govern- ment is run by actually participating in the running of it. Jim Allen attended Police School while at Boy's State and was later appointed by the governor to the State Police Board. He was also elected Precinct Committeeman. Sue Ellen Pottenger ran for Secretary of State but lost out at the Party Convention at Gir1's State. She was appointed by the Mayor of her city as Fire Chief and rode around Bloomington on the fire engine, Bill Dixon attended Lawyer School at Boy's State and became a lawyer. He ran for Attorney General but lost out at the party convention. He was also Precinct Committeeman and City Leader.
