The team captured the Capital City Conference meet at the Deaf School track for the first time in the history of the school. Pike was led all year by the stellar performance of Calvin Potter, jump ace. The other leading scorers were Dwaine Bell, a freshman runner, Fred Shelton in the M10 yard dash, Bobby Cochran in the pole relay team, Joe Conarroe and George Wagle in the field events. Pike ed in the dashes by Frank Grundy and John Snyder. Tom Anderson, points in the pole vault and high jump contests. The track team this year has lost only one senior, Calvin Potter, so the Pike fans are expecting great things from the team of 'h9. lowhurdle and high mile and half mile vault and half mile was well represent- a freshman, scored Last year the freshmen had one meet, the Marion County meet, in which they placed second to Southport. The Th mas M. Reveal Library of Pike Township The library was organized in l9h2 through funds left to Pike Township for a library by Th mas M. Reveal, a former resident. At the present time the library serves the elementary school and the high school. To avoid conflict and overcrowding, grades l through 6 are assigned to the library according to schedule. The junior high and senior high school students are admitted during study periods by individual permits. Reference books, pamphlets, clippings and pictures as well as fiction are included in the o Commerce Department Our Commerce Department offers three subjects in which you may major. They are short- hand, typing and bookkeeping. They are all two year courses but bookkeeping. The Com erce Department publishes the school paper bi-weekly, examinations, report cards, circulars, play programs, entertainment programs, school notices for c mmunity projects and programs for various clubs and organizations. The commercial subjects are offered to juniors and seniors only and are all taught by Mrs. Elloree Northcott. .mc Staff Editor -------- Wanda Robison Sports -------------- John Hayden Assistant Editor - - - Marilyn Yokem Charles Starkey Business Manager - - - Nancy Ralston Bob Cochran Typist --------- Alice Brooks Photography ---------- Wayne Jennings Advertisement ------ Jerry Roch Ed Schmidt Fred Engeler Circulation ------------ Bob Ewbank Tom Harris Mary Rose Dillon Fred Shelton Norma Smith School Activities - - - Alice Brooks Charles Coy Betty Guilfoil David Mercer Virginia Shelton Frank Grundy Martha Bernhardt Ethel Norman Inez Grundy Harvey Templin . As confident freshmen, we entered with feverish class spirit and elected our officers for the year, President--Nancy Ralston, vice president--Wanda Robison, secretary--Alice Brooks and treasurer--David Mercer. Miss Pearson was our capable sponsor. Shelton, Wanda Robison, and Richard Anderson. After being thoroughly initiated by the seniors, we felt as if we really belonged. Another year dawned with six new members added to our class and some of the old ones de- parted. Mr. Callahan was our sponsor. We fought on, and continued to gain victor- ies for ourselves and our institution. We sailed quite boldly through our sophomore year with a class party, the class tourneys, and the Halloween Carnival. Then, suddenly we were juniors. we had a lot to look forward to. we sold concessions at football and basketball games and sold school supplies at the book store. Our big moment came when we sponsored the junior play, HThe Campbells Are Coming,N which was a big success under the direction of Mrs. Frist. Our next thought was the Junior-Senior Prom. It was held at the Riveria Club, May l2. Rany Fox and Suzie Walker were chosen king and queen. we have every reason to think our year WBS 8. SUCCESS. The summer passed rapidly, then came senior dignity. Our officers for this year were: president-Jerry Roch, vice president-Fred Engeler, secretary-Marilyn Yokem, and treasurer-Charles Starkey. we had a full calendar ahead of us, but we knew we would enjoy every minute of it. A trip to Washington was decided, so we had to go to work to make a profit for our class. we sold Christmas cards and stationery and sponsored a popularity contest at the Halloween Carnival. we also sponsored a 'Scru-ball' basket ball game. As our annual will go into press before the school year ends, we will have to tell you what is going to happen. A senior play will be given, which we will try to make a success. On May 23 we will receive our degrees. The next day we will leave on our trip to Washington. Upon return we will each pass out into the waiting arms of the future, each in his own direction, to be cast where fate deems it necessary. Graduation Day By Betty Gilfoil, 12th grade Oh what a wonderful, wonderful day Is our commencement the last of May. We've been looking for this time Which will end our long hard climb. With shining eyes and smiling faces we join in line and take our places. Adorned in gowns of gray and white we feel we'll be a handsome sight. we are gay, yet we are sad Hating to leave, but joyfully glad. As men and women we remember the joys we had in school as girls and boys. And when the diplomas are handed out, With dignity and grace, we go about. Being congratulated and admired by all we walk up the steps of Future Hall. 4 .n, ,, ., V: 'nf '..' J' 'x . X. ' 'xx .Ms-,-I ,,. . ,' Q I N V ,:,1, '- I uf-Z.. M t, ' w ' 4, 'a 1' 1- . B. C. Congratulations! I have been gallivanting around the country ever since I left good old Pike High. Have you read my latest book, nThe Good Old Days?' It was published just before I started my tour of the States. I have made it a point to visit all our old classmates. What surprising careers they do have. Our great football star, Tom Harris, is now head janitor at the White House while Nancy Ralston is in office as the first woman president. He insists on hanging around no matter what, it seems. While in Philadelphia, I dropped by to see Marilyn Yokem and Fred Engeler in their new bookkeeping establishment. They seemed to be getting along fine. While up in that direction I was offered the chance to see Frank Grundy defend his heavyweight championship title which he has held for the last seven years. I heard that his sister, Inez, is a very good dietitian in Chicago. Just as I was leaving New York City, I heard the announcement that John Hayden had been chosen man about town by nEsquireW magazine. I took the N. Y. C. Special to Indianapolis. Who would be engineer, but the ever hand- some David Mercer. When I arrived in town, I went to see my old pal, Martha Bernhardt, who is now holding hands with the patients at Methodist Hospital. Oh boy! What a nurse! Fred Shelton is now known as uHonest John Sheltonn, the used car king. I think he is having trouble with the new car dealer, Wayne Jennings. I stopped by the school house to see Norma Smith, who is Home Ec. teacher now. She certainly is stern. She gave me a lot more information, for instance, Charles Starkey is Ag. professor at Purdue. He has just created a new hybrid corn. Wanda Robison has settled down and is now raising little NJohnies.N The only infor- mation she could give me was that Harvey Templin still drives north on the Zionsville road. Ethel Norman is now the owner of the largest restaurant in Indianapolis. After bidding Norma farewell, I took a plane to Missouri and who would be the airline hostess, but Alice Brooks. Right across the isle from me sat Charles Coy, J. Edgar Hoover's ace agent. He is making good use of those NS1y Old'Foxn qualities. When I arrived in St. Louis, I went to visit Bob Cochran, the famous baseball star of the St. Louis Cardinals. To my amazement he was reading WShakespeare's Most Famous Works.n 4' 2 . , J .1044 ,Asha Mtn! 4. fr? 'My '.f.,'Z.y'2l91 '.f?3Q- .P-,,1,Ql, Q. .' '-gif. QI' 13.21 M. I drove over into the Ozarks the following day to see Virginia Shelton, who had settled down there. That night she and I went to see Robert Ewbanks and his famous dance band. It certainly sent the memories flooding back to me. I got his autograph'after the performance. He told me to be sure and stop in Denver to see Jerry Roch, the magician, who has developed a new lipstick that won't rub off. What's the fun in that kind of lipstick? Naturally I visited Hollywood' and saw the latest heart throb, Pud Schmidt. He still signs his pictures WAnswer to a Ladies Prayer.n He was co-starring with Marylynn Hargrove in nKiss The Mud Off My Hands.N It was filmed on Guam. I would love to see you so we could talk over old times, but since that's impossible for a while, please write soon. Your old classmate, Betty Guilfoil n Gabby!! OUR CLASS POEM The Best Class Of all the classes along the line The best is the class of forty nine. The memories of this certain class From Pike High will never pass. we all admit we look to the day Which will send us on our way From the daily use of books And the teachers' scolding looks. In our class are musicians galore, And of athletes we have a score. Of all life's gifts, education is best, We've worked with ardor to meet the test. Among our class of twenty six we have a fellow who can do tricks, we have no Oscar Levant of the piano Our proud boast is a golden soprano. And then there is our favorite poet, He has talent and we all know it, All the rest have creative minds, we have talent of many kinds. There are many things I can say, Just for instance, the junior play, But perhaps too much I brag and boast, So to my class I drink a toast. By Betty Guilfoil ' fi ' K: HSV! 1 . DE PARTMENTS Visual Education Early in the fall, the school had a waste paper drive for the purpose of raising money for films during the school year. Mr. Daniels was put in charge of visual education. He has reported that during the school year about 200 films will have been showed throughout the entire school. There was a feeling that another projector was needed. As a result the Sth, 6th, 7th, and 8th grades, through their magazine sales, were able to present to the school a new projector. Driver Training Education Driver training is another subject offered to the students of Pike. At present, only a small per cent of the schools of Indiana offer this one semester course. Mr. Daniels was sent to a special instructor's course at Indiana University during September. Im- mediately upon his return the course was offered. Twenty-one people were enrolled and class work began. we received our training car about the first of November. During the school year about no people will have received driver instruction. Driving safely is our aim, it may save a life which may be your own. Science Depar.nents Pike now offers a major in the field of science: biology, physics, and chemistry. The chemistry department was added during the school year of l9b8. we feel as though we have as fine a laboratory as you will find anywhere in the State. Mr. Reese and Mr. Daniels teach the sciences. Some of us who were taking physics or chemistry wondered why and how we ever got into the situation, but we all learned a lot and we are not at all sorry for taking it. Home Economics The homemaking dept. under the supervision of Mrs. Teter is concerned with helping girls become better home and community members. Homemaking is directly related to any phase of home and family living. The girls have the opportunity to study, discuss, and practice better homemaking skills. This year the homemaking dept. offered first aid and home nursing units under the dir- ection of the American Red Cross. Other units taught includeg clothing selection and construction, meal planning and preparation, food preservation, child care, care of the house, and personal and social developementf One new piece of equipment was added to the department-a Chambers gas range. Addition- al equipment is expected to be installed in the near future. To further better understanding and add interest to the work the junior high homemaking classes were given a short unit of work in simple farm methods under the direction of Mr. Callahan while the boys learned a little about homemaking from Mrs. Teter. A chapter of the Future Homemakers of America, a national homemaking organization, was started this year for girls who have completed one semester of homemaking. The purpose of this club is to promote a growing appreciation of the joys and satisfactions of home- making, to emphasize the importance of worthy home membership, to work for good home and family life for all, and to further interest in home economics. 4 . ,H I I W A A A fx . . Girls' Physical Education Department The aims and objectives of the girls' physical education department are to instruct the girls how to have better muscular and mental control, to have a sense of fair play and team spirit, and to be able to co-operate with others. Some of the activities that the students may participate in during a physical education class are calisthenics, relays, team games, stunts, tumbling, pyramid building, or folk dancing. At the January meeting of the P.T.A. the junior high and high school girls' gym classes gave a demonstration. The purpose of this program was to demonstrate to the people of the com unity some of the activities which the girls do during a physical education period. The high school girls' class did calisthenicsg the seventh grade girls gave a Mexican folk dance. Individual and couple stunts as well as pyramid building were done by some of the members of each class. The program was concluded with a mass deck tennis game between the seventh and eighth grade girls. The eighth grade girls were victorious. 41 Afi 72 NA. And one day to his surprise Marshall discovered some dust. It glittered like sunlight, It was very, very bright. So he rushed up to his room Where he studied it all night. When at last he was convinced That he had found gold, He hurried over to Sutter's house And the fabulous story he told. The news quickly got about And everyone started West, Each to seek his fortune So from life's toil he could rest. The crowds kept right on coming Until finally one day, The people had all the money But his rent Marshall could not pay. So it didn't profit Marshall To find that much gold, Because now it's all gone And he is growing old. This ends my sad story Of the great nforty-niners,H But we'll always remember Those old gold miners! A Dream By Marolyn Stiles, 8th grade I would like to paint a picture, More than anything you see. Because some day an artist, Is what I want to be. I will paint, and paint, and paint, Trees, landscape, oceans, and streams. And put upon some canvas, My very fondest dreams. The Life of a Boy By Joan Dupee, llth grade When I was a little child, Even after I'd started to school, My mother says I drove her wild, And acted like a fool. Cops and robbers, HBang, bang, bang,n And Jesse James rides once more, With yells of nHi-yo Silver,N And nYou're deadu, o'er and o'er. And then Oh! what But then When I'd when I would tease the girls fun I had. it wouldn't be such fun, get spanked by Dad. And in the winter there would be Snowball fights and sledsg I'd always go a-running home, With banged up knees and head. But those happy days are over now, For now I'm grown up. 'Cause this morning, while at breakfast, I drank coffee from a cup. My Daddy's Eyes By Patty Smith, 7th grade I like to make cakes and pies, And doughnuts too for a big surprise. Cookies, candy, biscuits, and such, To finish up the final touch. I sit and sift, and stir and measure, But all this is quite a pleasure. I mix and pour, and beat some more, Oh, here comes Daddy in the door! He sniffs and smells of this and that And gives my shoulder quite a pat. Yes, I like to bake him cakes and pies, I love that look in Daddy's eyes. 'F -.1 11- 1I1. Mothers' Study Club The Pike'Township Mothers' Study Group had five meetings during the past year: October 12--nNew Avenues of Learningn were discussed by Amy Ripley and Beatrice Fink. November 9--An informal discussion of WHome and Family Life.W December 15--A Christmas tea in the home of Gale Huffman. Florence Coolman gave an outstanding review of The Other Wiseman. Dorothy Spivey delightfully entertained us with a group of Christmas songs and the history of their origins. March 8-WThe United Nationsw was presented by the League of Woman Voters. April 12--HChild Guidancen by Mrs. E. Vernon Hahn. With the exception of the Christmas tea all meetings were covered dish luncheons held in the homes where everyone enjoyed the informality and sociability of these gatherings. we were gratified to have so many new mothers join us this year and take part in our activities. Cafeteria The cafeteria has been operating successfully due to adding more time saving equipment to that which we already had. Much credit goes to the workers, Mrs. Wright, Mrs. Bragg, Mrs. Selch, Mrs. Brown. If anyone is absent her place may be taken by Mrs. Longmire, Mrs. Young, Mrs. Murphy, or a willing mother. Even with food at a premium price, we have been able to sell the best and have a high rating with the State Board of Health, the County Board of Health, and our county nurse.
