These people, are of course, the school board, administration and faculty, Long before school starts in September, these people are busy planning the curriculum and calendar for the coming school year, There are the students courses to be arranged, assembly programs to plan, athletic events to schedule and all the other details which constitute a successful school year. We feel that Mr, Schindler, Mr, Martin, and Mr. Bell have done a fine job: however, we know this would not have been possible without the cooperation given them by a conscientious faculty, Although we do not generally show it, we stu- dents sincerely appreciate their efforts to make as -fine a school system as we enjoy here at Delta, In leaving D. H. S. , we as seniors wish to thank every- one who has had a part in making our education so worthwhile and pleasant, SCHOOL ADMINISTRATION John D. However, we fell a little short of our goal, so each one paid a portion of his own way which made us appreciate it just a little more. After final arrangements had been made, we WIS selected our chaperones, Mr. and Mrs. Max Linn and Mr. and Mrs. Rodney Peterson and their small daughter, Tommi. They proved to be excellent choices. On Sunday, June 1, 1958, we met at the school to begin our adventure, There was much ex- citement and anticipation as we boraded the busses for Union Station where we met the train. After rid ing all night, we arrived the next morning fresh and eager qwell, anyway eagerly to see our national capitol and surrounding attractions. Monday was spent touring Baltimore, Maryland, 'H' 'W - trip to Washingfvu D. 63 5? rr! and other interesting sights. That evening we checked into the Dodge Hotel where we stayed while in Washington, D. C. The following two days we were not quite so energetic, but still just as eager, to continue our plans. They included tours of the capitol build- ing, the White House, and the Smithsonian Institute, to name a few. Never to be forgotten, were the expressions on the faces of those who climbed the Washington Monument. The 565 foot climb cer- Tuesday night was very enjoyable as we took a moonlight cruise down the Potomac River on a large touring boat. We stopped at an amusement park where the roller coaster drew the most attention. After another all-night ride we arrived at the Toledo Union Station where we boarded busses home- ward bound with this thought in mind: Our dream had come .... and now had past ,... and here we were . , , . back home at last! STANDING: Nan Warner, Bonnie Kistner, Dave Prentiss, Bruce Merrill, Terry White, Marilyn Reighard, Phyllis Harris. This year the student council met regularly un- der the supervision of Mr, Martin, They discussed and tried to solve problems which arose in the school. The council also supervised the election of the home- coming queen and her attendants. Our council became a member of the National Association of Student Councils this year and was also active in the newly formed Fulton County Association of Student Councils. Another new feature of this year's student coun cil was the weekly selection of a worthy student to be known as Town Teen, Perhaps the biggest achievement of this year's council was the modification of the student driving regulation, so that drivers are now allowed to have passengers. They worked hard, accomplished much, and are to be congratulated on a job well clone. STUDENT SECRETARIES SEATED: Marilyn Snyder, Marilyn McKibben, Sue Hollinger, Joyce Woody. The Future Farmers of America is a national organ- ization whose purpose is to educate rural youth and pro- mote the farming industry, Composing the national FFA are thousands of local chapters such as Delta's, This year the local chapter functioned under the leadership of Henry Hennings, president, and Mr, Burris, advisor, One of the most interesting events to the boys in FFA is the selection of a Chapter Sweetheart. This year she is Connie Kistner. Other activities include the annual square dance and a Christmas party held in cooperation with the FHA, There are also many activities which give the local chapter an opportunity to rate itself in comparison with other chapters, One of these is the parliamentary pro- cedure contest. Our chapter received a gold medal this year signifying the highest rating, Among the individual contests, the outstanding one is the public speaking contest which Delta Chapter often participates in. The story revolves around Roane Shep- perly, a blind girl, and her change from a young girl into a woman by the events which occur. Hester Fontaine . . . , Augustua Garvey . . . An accidental death is proved to be a murder. Tom- my Biller, a mentally retarded boy, was next, and it soon became apparent that the murderer was intent up- on getting rid of all those who were imperfect, making Roane next in line. One night slowly but surely all those in the house were taken care of until Roane faced the murderer alone-a blind girl against a mentally un- balanced killer. Herbert and Margaret Biller, the ser- vants, had gone to visit relatives, Tessie, the maid, had gone to town on her bicycle to get Inspector Church. Hester had gone to bed with a headache. Roane finally discovered that the murderer was her Uncle Ora. Through the play was threaded a charming love story involving Roane and Gerald Clayton, a young lawyer. Humor was provided by Augusta Garvey, a gossipy social friend of Hester's. SENIOR CLASS PLAY CANDIDATES FRONT ROW: I, Pelton, S, Leu, S. Hollinger, L. Weaver, C. Yunginger, S. Murray. ROW 2: J. Mary Ainslie, a charming and gracious little lady, has become a tradition in the quaint New England village where she has lived for many years. She lives alone with her memories, growing her lavender flowers and placing them amongst her rare old laces. Her closest friend and next door neighbor, Jane Hathaway, is leaving to take a tour of Europe, and Jane 's younger niece, Ruth Thorne, is coming from the city to occupy her aunt's house while the latter is away. When it becomes necessary for Jane to leave a week earlier than expected it is decided to close up the Hathaway's house and have Ruth stay with Miss Ainslie. Jane leaves in a flurry of excitement. At Miss Ainslie's home, Ruth Thorne and her hostess become warm friends. Carl Winfield, a young newspaper report- -67 er from the city, who is suffering with his eyes, comes to the New England village to rest, and brings with him a letter of introduction to Ruth. When Miss Ainslee sees him for the first time, she orders him out of her house! Later, she has Ruth bring him to tea so that'she may apologize for her rudeness. Carl, too, falls a victim to Miss Ainslie's charm and at the same time becomes en- gaged to Ruth, He suffers an accident which causes him to lose his eyesight, It is then that Miss Ainslie steps forth and fights heroically in order to help Carl regain his lost vision. The village is agog! Why should Mary Ainslie lavish so much care on a strange boy? What is their relationship to each other? But it is not until the last act, just before the final curtain, that the audience is let in on the secret. In a scene that is gripping with beauty, Mary Ainslie steps forth and reveals her reasons for having lived such a strange life. Our first game was on the 21st so the team could waste no time in brushing up on the fundamentals and getting their muscles smoothed out from football, In the opening game against Liberty Center, Delta showed good rebounding strength and hit the basket well. Liberty had us outsized but we had them out- scored 50-39. Following this Delta hit a slump and lost their next four games. er sounded one of the Delta players was fouled. With a lot of tension resting on his shoulders, he missed both shots, thus Delta lost 42-41 In the second game with Swanton, Delta couldn't miss and Swanton couldn't hit as the Panthers had a 67-45 victory. The last game of the season was by far the most pleasing victory of all. This game was with the Arch- bold Bluestreaks. Delta started out slow, but was go- ing full strength by half-time as they led 29-27. In the In the Christmas Tournament, Delta lost to Eastwood third quarter, Delta stopped for nothing as they dumped in the first game, but came back the next night to de- feat Napoleon 51-45, Next the Panthers traveled to Wauseon where they took on the Indians, who were at that time boasting a 'I-1 record and seemed a little over-confident. The Indians had a ten point lead at half-time, however, in the second half Delta came back strong and narrow- ed the lead to two points, With nine seconds to go the Panthers were trailing by one point, As the buzz- in 24 points to increase their lead to 53-38. Delta cool ed off a little in the fourth quarter, but maintained the lead to win the final game 58-56. The Panthers ended their regular season play with a 5-13 record. Although this may not have been too im- pressive, on occasions they displayed their fine play- ing ability. Our cheerleaders did a fine job this year encouraging school spirit and promoting sportsmanship. They made a neat appearance in their new uniforms, In the fall they at- tended a district cheerleading clinic at Bowling Green where they gained many new ideas. Under the coaching of Mr. Adkins, the track team will be striving to defend their county and dis- trict titles this year, Although the squad graduated six lettermen, they have nine returning and should continue on their winning ways, After Delta won the district championship at Bowling Green last year, the boys who placed first and second went on to the state meet, Although they found the competition there much tougher than at District, those who are returning this year gained much valuable experience. Last year the Delta team placed third in the NWOAL League behind Bryan and Napoleon. This year the boys are again anticipating a suc- cessful season. They have the material, and with the necessary desire, Delta should not only retain the county and district titles, but possible recogni- tion at the state meet. Returning lettermen and the probable events which they will participate in are as follows: Daryl Morr, 1 mile run, 880 yard dask, 880 yard relay: Ed Bowerman, high jump, 880 yard relay: Charles Tanier, low hurdles, 100 yard dash, 880 yard re- lay, broad jump: Steve Hill, 440 yard dash, 1 mile relay: Mike Mack, shot put, discus: Duane Peabody, high hurdles: Jim McDonnall, 440 yard dash, 1 mile relay: Allen LaSalle, 880 yard dash. -84 BASEBALL TEAM FRONT ROW: Doug Lyons, Phil Morr, SEATED: Daryl Morr, Larry Shelt, Allen LaSalle, John La- Salle, Allan Slagle, Larry Kissell, Hal Walter, Coach Rollins. In the N, W, O, A. L. last year, Delta beat Swan- ton and Liberty Center. They lost to Bryan, Napo- leon, Wauseon, and Montpelier, ending the season with a 5-6 overall record. Most of the boys on the team have pretty high hopes for the baseball team this year. Last year Delta lost their first game in the Fulton County Tournament, but we think things will change this year.
