TWELVE YEAR HISTORY Because there was no kindergarten when we started to school, we went directly to the first grade. We shall always remember the first day because Valerie LaMont cried all the time we were there. The nicest part about the first day was that we had to go only for an hour. After we really got started, we said the ABC's every morning and counted to lC0. It wasn't long before everyone knew his numbers and alphabet backwards and forwards. Our unlucky teacher was Miss Spiess. We had a big, big, toy band that made lots of noise. Our second year was rather uneventful. About all we did was arithmetic: multiplication, subtraction, ad- dition and division. We had a program every Friday, participated in by everyone that thought he had talent. Poor Miss Rupp was the teacher. The third grade was really taught by Miss Dripps. VVe drilled on multiplication and writing. We went to the Toledo Library and the Toledo Zoo. The operetta, The Gingerbread Man, was a big success. We made Sombreros and Serapes, with lots of paint, paste and colors all over the floor after we were done. Jack Short brought a recipe for making Mexican tortillas and we were supposed to take the recipe home and try it. Everyone survivcdg so it must not have been too bad. Miss Basinger was our fourth grade teacher. She suffered with us through all our trials and tribulations. We visited the Atlas Office, Water Works, Pet M'lk and the Delta Depot. We watched the train leave the mail. Everyone had told us if we got too close we would be sucked under the train, so we all stood back and hardly saw the mail being caught On the hook. H.M. S. Pinafore was the operetta put on by our grade this year. One night of practice no one came because the weather was so bad. The next morning' everyone got the dickens from the music teacher, Mr. Hartman, who was directing the play. Our fifth grade teacher, Miss Alexander, read us Tom Sawyer, Huckleberry Finn and many other books. This was also election year and the staunch Democrats and Republicans in school really had a battle over who deserved the offices. The last day of school we had a picnic at the park. All morning the pop, in huge tubs, tantalized us tre- niendously. 4213
