WVe hope in this small way we can express our gratitude and gratefulness for all the little things she has done to help the students of Del-Hi. As teacher of Speech and English, Mrs. Johnson has proven her efficiency and achievements. Included in these are the debates and many plays she has directed. NVe also want to give our hearty thanks for the helping hand she gave in mak- ing this annual a success. F ORE ORD LET'S STEP OUT FOR A LOOK AT THE YEAR The year caught a spirit of evolution and change as Delta High continued to grow with the times, accented by the quickened tempo of an alert and increasingly aware student body and faculty. A tradition already hal- lowed was enriched and perpetuated by this year's group of an intimate student body, a student body distinct in the degree of its loyalty and friendship. , Come with us as we record our life at school this year. As we trace the memories and events, our work and play together, look and listen closely . . . there is the faint reverbera- tion of a once mighty cheer from the football stadium . . . the sparkle and glamour of the junior-Senior Prom . . . bright days in a bright year. A. 4 It's really hard to explain to you just how a graduate feels: Vv'e're sorry to leave our school falthough this sorrow we try to concealj. But still vve're looking forward to this new, bright life in which we'll dwell, So when people ask if we're sorry or glad we're graduating, which it is we just can't tell. But we leave this book so we can relive these years which held such happy days g And here are just a few remembrances as we go along our way. Remember that paper cutter, in the ofhce, that squeaked but never cut?? Remember that tough algebra problem that had you in a deep, dark rut?? Remember that important basketball game we won in the last few seconds of play ?? Remember that day you were throwing paper wads and got yourself caught, much to your dismay?? Remember that solo you had in the band and you went and hit a glaring wrong note ?? Remember when you'd go to your locker for your coat, and everything else came out but that coat?? Yes, in these four years, we've had our ups and downs, we've lost and then again we've won But through victory and defeat we have to admit we've sure had loads of fun. So, when we're lonely and feeling gray, we'l1 open up this Del-I-Ii Diary and say, Hi Delta and all my friends, with you it's always a pleasure to remember my high school days. The autobiographical play dealt with the problems of Ruth Uams Shrullj and .her mother CSharon Kellerj in telling father QGlen Mattinj that she wanted to be an actress and getting his consent. Father's great desire was to make Ruth a physical culture instructor so he invited the two finest physical specimens he knew, Mr. Bagley fChuck Huntj and Miss Glavin Uane Fingerj, to come to his home and show Ruth and mother the value of Indian clubs. Katharine CShirley Rychenerj and Anna QGerry Bernathj, Ruth's.best friends, did all they could to comfort Ruth by reading the latest Theatre Arts magazine to her and show- ing her the latest photographs of a stage star's private life. Mother and father had their troubles too, for father couldn't see why they had a gro- cery bill of two dollars every week and why Muffins, the cat, had to have special meat. The installation of the latest crank style telephone also caused a crisis in the Jones' household. The stage crew, under the direction of Bob Smith as stage manager, had a very effec- tive stage showing, the old-fashioned dining-sitting room of 1913. The long skirted cos- tumes of the girls also lent a very nostalgic charm to the play. Complications ensued when Ruth finally told of her desire to go on the stage, especially with her Harvard boy friend, Fred QAllen Segristj, but father aided instead of hindered and all ends well with the arrival of Mr. Sparrow CPaul Galbraithj, who owned a wagon, for Ruth's trunk and her departure for the Broadway stage. P. S. She ended up a star and playwright. The Senior Class would like to thank Mr. Klee for directing na very successful class play. M., the Junior class left Toledo's Union Station for Washington, D. C. Last year, because of a ruling placed against the use of a school bus except in your own area, we traveled on the B. 81 Ofs Ambassador Limited. .Breakfast was served in the diner the next morning, and upon arrival in Washington, we were met by a Sightseemg, Inc., representative. Our First glimpse of Washington was of President Truman. He was boarding his special train. I Our first stop was the White House, followed by the Pan American Building, Capitol, Congressional Library and the U. S. Supreme Court Building. While we were at the Capitol, a photographer took our class picture on the lawn with the Capitol in the background. At 1:00 BM. we arrived at the Hotel Annapolis and our rooms were assigned. After luncheon in the Everglades Dining Room of the hotel, we went to the U. S. Naval Observatory and last to the un- finished Vffashington Cathedral. After dinner, everyone enjoyed a three-hour moonlight cruise on the Potomac. 'FAriday, we visited Washington Monument, Bureau of Engraving, U. S. National Museum, Archives Building, F. B. I., and finally the Naval Academy at Annapolis, Maryland. While touring Annapolis, we were fortunate enough to see Budd Knapp, a former graduate of Delta. Saturday, the last day in Washington, we went through Smithsonian Institute, and in the afternoon toured the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, Arlington National Cemetery, Alexandria, Mt. Vernon, and Lincoln and Jefferson Memorials. ,loyce Cox, a former graduate of Delta, was also visiting Mt. Vernon at the time we were there. She is now a head nurse and supervisor of a ward at the VVash1ngton Univers ty Hospital. 1 Our three-day visit soon sped by and We found ourselves again on the train for Toledo. In September, the Juniors chose their class rings, and received them as an early Christmas present. The class play, being the most outstanding event, was presented with great success on November 30. The Juniors also worked hard managlng most of the football and basketball concessions, to raise enough money for the traditional trip to XVasbington, D. C., in June. Besides all this, they produced a very nice junior-Senior Banquet. We have good reasons to bd proud of our industrious junior class this year. t JU IOR CLASS PLAY I l First Row Seated: Donelda Lozer, Donna Fortncy, Elsie Keiser, Marcia Koester, Carol LaSalle, Betsy Shelt Second Row Standing: Clifford Eckert, Kent McKee, Doran Snyder, David Beatty, Doris Brown, Margaret Bratton, Sue Segrist, Mrs. Mack Third Row Standing: Arthur VVelcl1, Marilyn Ruger, Milton Hollinger, Calvin Brehm, james Nofzinger. And Came The Spring, a comedy of modern youth was presented November 30, 1948, by the Junior class, under the direction of Mrs. Mack. It is the story of a typical American family who suddenly find themselves surrounded by spring, and love. On the nrst day of spring vacation, Midge, the ' 1 in jest. finds herself amidst her Hrst love, Buzz Lindsay, but it seems that the gentle'-nrtif of her choice is unluckily in love with Midge's older sister, Virginia. When Midge :.ttr.inpts to manage lives and emotions to suit her own needs, the hectic and hilarious CO!-Ctlil'l'1S into which she plunges the family almost prove disastrous. She causes her sister Zll?'l1Oinf to lose the right boy: she disrupts brilliant brother Elliott,s carefully planned life as a writer of tragic novelsg she threatens her father's businessg in short the sanity and well-being of everyone concerned is threatened. But in the end, Midge again steps in and fixes things up: and bv the t11ne spring vacation is over, the three Hartman children have taken important steps toward maturity. Their parents have learned a few things, too. The characters were: Mr. Jeffrey Hartman-jim Nofzingerg Elliott Hartman-Dave Beattyg Buzz Lindsay-Everett Neville, Keith Nolan-Milton Hollinger, Freddie North- Art XVelch, Mr. Fields-Kent McKeeg Alan Fields-Calvin Brehmg Mrs. Fields-Doris Browng Mrs. Louise Hartman-Betsy She-ltg Midge Hartman--Elsie Keiser, Virginia Hart- man-Donna Fortneyg Edna-Carol LaSalle, Clancy-Doran Snyder, Carollyn VVebster- Marcla Ixoesterg Christine Myers-Sue Segristg Gabby Allen-Margaret Brattong Mes- senger Boy-Skip Eckert. Valerie LaMont became star salesman in the class by selling 3119.60 worth of subscriptions. Next on their agenda was the 5-H banquet on March 29. The class mothers prepared the food and the class served a delicious meal. But all work and no play even makes Sophomores dull, vso to prevent that unfortunate circumstance the class had an informal party in December. Then you'll be the band, athletic teams, debaters, office helpers and all the other organizations. But, we'11 be there rooting for you because we know you'll come . out strong for Delta High School. During the sum- mer months the band made many trips to several homecomings, the Fair and other outside events. During the football season they really went out in a big way. Along with the snappy green uniforms they had white spats, white gloves and lights for their hats. On October Z8 the band went to Bowling Green to hear the Marine Band Concert. No- vember 6 the band attended the Ohio State and Pittsburg football game. Here they saw both bands perform during the half. On December 21 the band played for the town Christ- mas program which was broadcast over VVSPD Sidewalk Interview. 1 Also in the music department is the Mixed Chorus with 67 members who attended the district auditions at Ada. That's right, I'm describing the football season. XVe had a small team again this year. Nevertheless, they were in there lighting in every game. The boys came out of the season with no serious injuries. They gave plenty of thrills to their followers and all of us were eager to watch them play. The best game of the season was the Wfhitehouse game. It ended up in a scoreless tie CO-Oj. Delta did score a touch- down, however, but it was called back because of a penalty. Mr. Whitcomb, Julie Miller, Phyllis Aumend, Phyllis Conrad, Vloyce Brown, Doretta Cass May 26-30 the Senior class of 1948 enjoyed a most educational trip to Washington, D. C. The class was accompanied by Mr. and Mrs. Wliitcomb. They left Toledo's Union Station at 7:05 P. M. and traveled on the B 8LO's Ambassador Limited. One of the first new experiences for the students was eating break- fast in the diner, before reaching Washington. They arrived at 9:15 A. M. and were immediately taken on a four-hour morning tour of the Wliite House, Pan American Building, Capitol Building, Congressional Library and the U. S. Supreme Court Build- ing. At 1:00 they finally reached the Hotel Annapolis where the group received their room assignments. Luncheon was served in the Everglades Dining Room of the Hotel Annapolis. In the afternoon the class toured the Wasliington Zoo and the beautiful but still unnnished Washington Cathedral. In the evening, the class enjoyed a three-hour Moonlight Cruise on the Potomac. The next day also included a very heavy schedule. First came the Washington Monument, followed by the Bureau of Engraving, the U. S. National Museum, the Archives Building, and the F. B. I. The F. B. I. was especially interesting to the students as they were shown just how the F. B. I. goes about tracing down desperate criminals, murders and spies. After lunch at the hotel, the group took a four and one- half hour tour to the Naval Academy at Annapolis, Maryland. The last day in Washington the entire morning was spent at the Smithsonian Institute. .In the after- noon they visited the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, Arlington' National Cemetery, Alexandria, Mt. Ver- non, and the Lincoln and Jefferson Memorials. - At 6:50 P. M. they were again on the train, but this time headed for Toledo, as their year's trip -was completed. A choice of roast turkey or baked ham was enjoyed in the diner that evening. They arrived in Toledo at 7:30 A..M., Sunday, very tired but very happy and much wiser. i l 1 E E 2 SQ S 46 i S Calendar SEPTEMBER ll-Football Round-Robin at Delta. 13-The Marines Have Landed!
