1946 DEL-HI Published by the Senior Class of Delta High School Editor-in-Chief Anna Marie Christensen Assistant Editor Phyllis McKeen Business Manager Jack Alcorn Assistant Business Managers Harley Bowerman Deryle Stiriz Ted Hunt Literary Writers Richard Clay Marilyn Falor Darleen Frank Richard Granger Typists Ellen Mann Betty Harmon Richard Mizer Izetta Ernsthausen IN MEMORIAM The class of 1946 wishes to pause a moment in memory of one of our classmates, Emogene Keller. Emogene was taken from us in 1944. Her passing saddened the hearts of all of us. She had won our friendship and admiration through her friendliness and thoughtfulness to and for the people around her and through her achievements in school. And though she is now gone, her memory is still with us and will always be because of these things. --------------v -r7 DEDICATION TO GOLDA NAU, who has been helping so much and so long, we the Senior Class of 1946 dedicate this Del-Hi. We hope in this small way to express our appreciation, and the appreciation of all the Senior Classes she has been with for the work and interest she has given so unselfishly. Miss Nau has been with Delta High School a long time. We honestly feel that if she were not here to help us with the annual there would be something lacking about it. A certain quality, that surely must be Miss Nau’s would be gone. So, Miss Nau, we give our hearts in thanks to you for everything, which is so much, that you have done for our Commercial Department. FOREWORD EVERY YEAR THAT WE REMEMBER AND MANY YEARS RF.FORE THAT, DELTA HIGH SCHOOL HAS HAD A DEL-HI. THE PURPOSE OF ALL THESE DEL-HIS WAS TO HELP KEEP THE MEMORIES OF HIGH SCHOOL DAYS FRESH IN EVERYONE’S MIND. AND THEY FILLED THEIR PURPOSE. THIS YEAR IS NO DIFFERENT FROM THESE YEARS GONE BY. WE WISH THIS DEL-HI TO HELP YOU REMEMBER YOUR SCHOOL AND YOUR SCHOOLDAYS. WE WANT THIS BOOK TO BRING VIVID THOUGHTS AND MEMORIES IN YOUR MINDS. IF WE DO MAKE YOU REMEMBER, IF WE BRING A SMILE TO YOUR LIPS OR A LUMP IN YOUR THROAT, THEN WE HAVE AGAIN ACHIEVED THE GOAL. The Senior Class of Delta presented this comedy on April 12, 1946, under the direction of Mrs. Johnson. The story relates the adventures of a handsome young automobile salesman, who, on inheriting a girls' boarding school, insists on running it according to his own ideas, chief of which is that the dominant feature in the education of the young girls of today should be charm. The situations are teeming with humor—clean, wholesome humor. In the end the young man gives up the school, and promises to wait until the most precocious of his pupils reaches a marriageable age. Then the minister opened his hymn book and said ‘No. 575, Art Thou Weary, Art Thou Languid?” and [ got seven days in the guard house because I answered: I certainly am!” PAY THE PIPER A Welsh preacher was talking to his congregation about salvation. Finally his sermon was finished, and then he said: “Now, then Brother Smith, will you take up the collection please ?” At this point an old man got up and started for the door, saying: “Parson. I thought you aid salvation was free—free as the water we drink.” “Well, brother.” replied the preacher, “salvation is free and water is free, but when we pipe it to you. you have to pay for the piping.” BRIEF EXPLANATION Miss Nau: “Now girls, can .anyone tell me the meaning of ‘unaware’?” A tiny hand waved frantically in the air. Miss Nau: “Yes, Phyllis M.” Phyllis McKeen: “Please, mum, unaware is what you put on first and take oft' last.” GOOD RIDDANCE “And now,” said Mrs. Gens, “will someone please give us a sentence using the word ‘candor’ ?” “Please’m,” said the Chuck Hunt in the front seat, “My papa had a pretty stenographer, but ifter ma saw her he candor.” A LESSON IN PATIENCE Three boys entered a village confectionery. The rather gruff old proprietor said to the first boy: “What do you want, my boy?” “A dime’s worth of marbles, please.” The old man climbed a ladder, brought down the jar that contained the marbles, made up the packet and returned the jar to the shelf. Then he asked the second boy what he wanted. “A dime’s worth of marbles, please,” was the answer. “Why didn’t you say so before?” said the old man irritably, as he went for the ladder again. “Do you, want a dime’s worth of marbles too?” “No,” replied the third boy. The old man climbed to the shelf again, brought down the jar, made up the second packet of marbles, restored the jar to the shelf, and once more put the ladder away. “Well, my boy. and now what do you want?” he asked of the third boy. “A nickel’s worth of marbles,” came the answer. DO TELL Dad: “Now, children, tell me who has been the most obedient during the last month, and done everything that Mother asked him to do?” Tom B.: “How big is he?” KNOWS HIS RIGHTS Bob L.: “Mother, you h tye no right to send me to bed without my supper.” Mother: Why, what do you mean, young man ?” Bob L.: “Well, the Declaration of Independence says ‘there should be no governing without the consent of the governed.’ ” FAIR ENOUGH It was the old lady’s first ride in a taxi. She watched with growing alarm the driver as he continually put his hand outside the car as a signal to the traffic following. At last she said: “Young man. you look where you are going and keep both hands on the wheel. I’ll tell you if it starts to rain.” SIGN HERE? Little Johnny, aged seven, had been taken to the zoo to see the animals. He stood before the spotted leopard’s cage for a few minutes, staring intently. Then turning to his mother, he asked: “Say. This year the debate subject was: Resolved, That every able-bodied male citizen of the United States should have one year of full-time military training before attaining age of twenty-four. The Speech Class presented the question to the student body as an assembly program February 6. The Napoleon debate team came to Delta for a practice debate December 20. This year our debators became members of the Ohio High School Speech League to be eligible to go to the District Debate Tournament held at Sylvania on February 9. At Sylvania Delta tied with Napoleon in the Class B competition. This entitled both schools to go to Lima for the State Semi-finals. At football games every one loves to see the strutting majorettes and hear the boom of the bass drum and watch the marching feet at half-time. At critical moments of the game the band cheered the players to victory, playing our Fight Song, Across the Field. When, the basketball season opened, the Band was there to provide music for both teams. During the Basketball Tournament the Band was in charge of the two concession stands. In the spring Delta played host to the county for the County Music Festival, with Delta’s Band joining the other bands of Fulton County to present a concert on March 1 5. Vivacious Phyllis McKeen, energetic Sharon Keller, and the incomparable Jack Alcorn. Delta is proud of these cheerleaders with their looks, spirit, and ability, they are something to be proud of. At all our football and basketball games they were out in front, cheering and putting their hearts in the cheering. When things went bad for us, as they sometimes did, Phyllis, Jack and Sharon were still on the job with just as much, or with more pep, giving us that enthusiasm that is needed at such times. It is a hard job and we know it; so we wish to express our appreciation to you—Jack, Phyl and Sharon. You were an inspiration to us all. Thanks.
