I-Ie has given his whole-hearted support, not only to the publication of this annual, but to every annual that Delta High has published. He has made great contributions to our athletic field and has always been willing to help us in time of need. lPa.ge Four! One that was used in the old claysg one that is used at presentg and one that represents the dream of what our building will be in the future. There is a contrast. Delta High School needs better housing facilities. Throughout the nation there is a movement to have every child in a fire-proof building. We hope the time is near when Delta will have the building of the future. Delta is a community representative of progress. I hope our SUPTI JOHN J. BEALL dream comes true. B. A., Heidelberg, Wooster, M. A., Ohio State MESSAGE No matter how we define education it must be agreed that it is a process of adjustment. Born with certain in- stinctive tenclencies, man is ill-fitted to participate in social life until his inherited instincts and capacities have been altered into socially useful habits, interests, and powers. Perhaps his most characteristic inherited capacity is his capacity for growth. It is this which distinguishes him from other animal creation. It is necessarily a long and elaborate process -a process requiring an extended period of preparation to meet the complex ROBERT A, YOUNKIN world of today. Such is the purpose of P'inciP0fl Delta's Public Schools. B. S., Bowling Green Normal BOARD OF EDUCATION-George Whitehorne, Presidentg Dr. R. C. Todd, Dr. C. L. Senior History It does not seem possible that four years have passed. It seems that only yesterday we began our high school career with great anticipation and shaky knees, and have already reached our goal-Graduation and Commencement. And now that Commencement has come we realize what the true meaning of that beautiful word is. Indeed, it is the commencement of our great journey on a new road of life. Dear Old Delta High School whose portals we have left for others, advised and encouraged us on this journey. As we started upon our four year course in 1927, we discovered many highways filled with obstacles and stumbling blocks standing out vividly before us. We each chose the course that would pave the way for our future honor, success and happiness. Our year's activities were directed by Carolyn Mattern, president and Vivian Dewyer, secretary. Before we realized it, June came, it brought with it vacation. lPage Tenl -fDEL-I-II1-- EPRAIM BIXLER Eppie Bashfu1ness is worth all that it costs. F. F. A. 1, 2, 3, 4. We chose the following officers: Hilliard Camp, presidentg James Owen, secretary and treasurer. This was rather an uneventful year. Again came vacation and we departed with the happy realization that we were Juniors. After three months of splendid recreation we gladly returned to high school in September, 1929. As Juniors our deliberations were pre- sided over by Arthur Fish, president, Betty Koder, secretary and treasurer. During this year we were striving for three goals: flj We all desired to become Seniors at the end of the term. Q25 We wanted our Senior Prom to be the best yet. QB, Our class play Applesauce to be a great success. By the splendid leadership of Miss Hollinger and the rest of the faculty we attained all three goals. Our athletic record was good, being well represented in football, basketball, and track by boys and girls winning the Intramural Class Basketball trophy. In May we departed from school, each one realizing with a pang of regret that only one year remained for us to honor Delta High School with our presence. We determined to make it one to be remembered. Therefore, we returned in September, 1930, as dignified Seniors. Our directors were Floyd Ralcer, president and Florence Dodge, secretary and treasurer. Our Senior play, Second Childhood, was a great success. Miss Evans was our play director. Also, our annual appears to be the best published as yet. Fellow Classmen, we seemed to have chosen wisel , but, let us re- member that though we may all detour in many different irections through- out our careers, we will always be bound together by that mutual love for Dear Old Delta High School. He was now a prosperous young man who had successfully climbed from clerk to manager of the A. 66 P. chain stores. As he opened it to the sport page he gasped with surprise for there was Ellsworth Ohlinger's familiar grin and written below in large type were the words: Former Delta Grid Star Makes All-America Team . Gee, mused Merlyn, I wonder where all the rest of the class of '31 are and what they are doing? He turned to the front page and began to carefully look thru the news to see if there were any items about his former friends. On the second page he was rewarded with this article: New Methodist Church of Dallas, Texas, designed by Mildred Raker, and constructed by the Dinius Construction Company owned by Walter Dinius, will be opened this Sunday, June 30, 1941, and the pastor of this church will be the well-known missionary, Stanley Woodringf' This brought back memories of Stanley's Epworth League programs and Merlyn chuckled gleefully. A few pages further he read the announcement of the opening of the Scandals of 1941 featuring the lovable Carolyn Mattern whose singing would make a banana jealous when it came to appeal. Merlyn straightway decided to attend the show and, dashing to the street, hailed a taxi. Upon clambering in he found it to be driven by Stanley Huit. Why, hello, Stan old timer! Where is the Nash you used to travel in? Sh-h-h, warned Stan, Don't tell anyone but I'm writing a story and am doing this for atmospheref, When Merlyn announced his destination Stanley decided to accompany him and together they entered the theater. After the performance they met Carolyn at the door and asked her if she knew where any of the Delta '3 1-ers were as they were looking them up. Well, she told them, You are in luck. Come down to my house and you can probably find out about all of them as James Goddard and Arthur Fish promised to be there and as you probably remember they always knew what was happening at all times. While they were riding along she told them: You know Jimmy is famous now too. He writes all of Mickey Mouse's comedies for him and Arthur is the leading financier of the country. lPage Fourteenl -f DEL-HI1- KENNETI-I MOI-IR Dinty God's gift to women. F. F. V ' Well, said Stanley, Do tell us what every one is doing. And that started them off. James took Z1 long breath and told us this: i'Lenore Dewyer is a blonde now, And she married Kenneth Mohr, They are living very happily, And he works in Perl Schlagel's Ten Cent store. Florence Dodge is the world's typing champ, She writes a hundred words per sec, Lawrence Norris is a multi-millionaire, His only work is to sign a check. At this jimmy paused to take a breath and Art cut in, Well, I can't give it in a jingle, but here's the low-down on some more of the class. Hilliard Camp very diligently studied music and is now the private music instructor of Charles Lindbergh Junior. And Ethlyn Mizer, poor girl, you heard about her? Noi said Merlyn, breathless, What? Why, she married the Prince of Wales for his title and the week after the ceremony England became a republic and elected a president and now Ethlyn is in a convent, trying to forget her great disappointment. Then there is that new sensational newspaper that began circulating in New York recently- The Green Gazette. That is the work of Richard Green. Arthur then stopped for breath and Carolyn's maid brought in refreshments, all of which tasted very good but the crowning glory was the McQuillan Cocktail concocted, Carolyn told us, by Hazel McQuillan herself. After this reviving repast Arthur told us about an invention that seemed to Merlyn and Stanley most worth while. It was a school room clock, guaranteed to run fast during class periods without the teacher, the superintendent or principal suspecting a thing. This was the invention of Clyde and Floyd Raker. Many cheers. Marguerite Wagner discovered that she was the long lost niece of the famous Wagner who left her his entire fortune when he died and she now spends her time building homes for stray dogs. And of course you know about 'Pie' Deck becoming a famous orator and debater?', broke in Jimmy again. Oh yes, said Stan, and do you remember how he used to argue in American Literature class? Capitall said Arthur, And maybe he can tell us about the rest of the class. The next evening, after a distinct victory over his opponent, Ellsworth Deck was surprised to find himself surrounded by his old Deltonian friends and after they had congratulated him he answered Carolyn's query thus: The old gang? Let's see. Glenn Dunbar is conducting the snappiest orchestra in the United States at the Brown Derby and he has several of the class with him. Arvah Tremain plays the piano, Ephraim Bixler the violin, and Richard George the saxophone. Florence Hines runs the exclusive Hines Dancing School and is an authority on the latest dance steps. Remember some of those old fashioned steps we used to labor thru? Charleston, Varsity Drag, Graf Sway and all the rest. Those were the good old days all right. Say, we sure have a lot to talk over. C'mon home with me and on the way I'll tell you something that will surprise you. After next week there will be a Mrs. 'Pie' Deck. Pie! What? When? Who? I didn't know! Never suspected! Tell us! All these startled exclamations caused 'Pie' to chuckle and he said, You would never guess. It is one of our old classmates-Celia Rychenerf' Congratulations! After receiving his friends' good wishes they arrived at his home and he told them about the rest of the class of 1931. Glen Reed has begun living like Thoreau and writing philosophy. Do you remember how he argued against a simple life like that when we studied Thoreau? And then Onalee Wiley has distinguished herself by being the first woman to imitate Byrd's expedition to the North Pole. She went in the new type of plane designed by Gordon Tompkins. Evelyn Norris married the Jewish ambassador whom she met through Lawrence. And Grace Meridew-she was so bashful and quiet-she is now married to Franklin Free who is the head of the Boy Scouts. And then last but not least is Howard Grey. He just won the heavy-weight championship and is assured of a brilliant career. That is the entire class and as we can't all get together once more let us sing Varsity with all the old-time fervor in honor of our Delta school days because every one of that class of '31 is a credit and honor to old D. We staged Dulcy, a three-act comedy, on March 27. We participated in the intramural games and managed to keep a few members of our class on the honor roll. This semester she has divided the class into groups, each group having a chairman and has given each group some topic on which to work. Each group will be required to write a term paper on some subject she will assign them. Mr. Younkin will send these papers to Columbus to show what fine work the class has done. His weight was a winning factor and he had an uncanny faculty of getting away for consistent gains. Arthur Fish Fullback One of the best defensive men on the team. He was speedy, flashy, and spectacular throughout the season. Ellsworth Deck Halfback He was a good utility backlield man, able to kick, pass, and make first downs. Glen Reed Tackle Reed played tackle and what he lacked in weight he made up in speed and fight. Most of the opponents recognized this fact when they ran up against him. Clyde Raker Tackle Clyde did not fiinch when it came to playing tackle and went smashing through the line in true veteran style. Richard Green Center A man always on the job. Dick was a faithful hard working player who never knew when he was licked. Floyd Raker KC, Guard Floyd played a brand of good, straight, hard football. When he got started there was nothing going to stop him. Kirkwood Turpening Center Kirky though small in stature was our fighting center. He passed the ball with great speed and accuracy. Wilson Olmstead Fullback A good kicker, excellent passer and a fine open field runner. He managed to pull the team out of many a tight place. Vern Knapp Quarterback Snappy played most any position on the field, steady and constant, but we expect more of him'next year hoping he will do better. Carl Whitmire Halfback He had the determination to do his best all through the game, and no one displayed more fighting spirit and gameness than Carl. Wayne Deck End Cake played his second year of football for Delta High School and he is a clean lad with lots of pep and enthusiasm. He still has two more seasons with us. Roy Rathman Guard As a guard Rathman surely met the requirements. He put all he had into the game but we expect more of him the next two years. Willard Mack End When Swede got out on the football field he forgot everything except to crash through and get his man. He was right there to hold up his end of the line. Harold Vollmar Guard He displayed great ability in his Freshman year. Great things are expected of him in his future years in D. H. S. Robert Fashhaugh Manager Bob filled the managers post in excellent fashion. Much credit is due him. lPage Thirty-Threel -I DEL-1-11 1- Refview of Football Season DELTA vs. ARCHBOLD The Gold and White football squad of Delta started out this season by defeating Archbold 13-0. DELTA vs. NAPOLEON A grim, hard fighting football team made history here when Delta's warriors defeated Napoleon for the first time by a score of 8-0. Almost the entire game was played in the shadow of the opponent's goal. DELTA vs. MORENCI Delta received its first defeat when Morenci gridders scored a goal kick making it 3-0. The Gold and White did not seem to get started. DELTA vs. MONTPELIER The Gold and White football squad emerged on the short end of a 14-0 score in its battle for league-leading honors at Montpelier. This defeat dropped Delta into third place tie with Xwauseon. Delta's goal was threaten- ed many times but their stubborn defense held Nlontpelier to 14 points. DELTA vs. BRYAN Eleven crippled players of Delta faced Bryan's heavy team and in- juries spelled defeat for the locals. This was the third home game and the interest in the team seemed to be at low ebb. Some of the players had damaged hands, ankles, arms, and cracked ribs, so they could not be expected to do their best as was shown by the score 26-0. DELTA vs. STRYKER Delta staged a real comeback after the defeat of the three previous weeks by defeating Stryker 27-7. A little humor was added to a part of the last quarter when little Jimmy Harmon Q3 ft., 2 in., was put in to play halfback. Jimmy could be depended upon to do his part. DELTA vs. LIBERTY CENTER The game with Liberty Center was closely fought all the way, twice the Henry County eleven came within scoring distance, and each time the Delta line stiffened and pushed them back. On one occasion the Gold and White machine almost went over the line, but the necessary scoring punch was lacking. The result: a scoreless tie. DELTA vs. SWANTON The players of both Delta and Swanton seemed to be quite evenly matched at the beginning of the game. However, Delta lacked the scoring punch to prove herself master as shown by the score 13-0. DELTA vs. WAUSEON On a field sprinkled with snow the annual Thanksgiving classic was played in a zero temperature. Costly fumbles caused by cold-stiffened fingers contributed to Delta's defeatg Wauseon was out to revenge last year's loss, and would not be denied victory. Score 6-0. His consistent playing was an inspiration to the other players. Carl Whitmire Guard Carl played a guard position which is hard to surpass as the opponents seldom evaded him and scored a basket. Wayne Deck Forward Cake was an excellent forward and we are very glad to still have him with us next year. Willard Mack Forward Swede, although a Green Freshiej' had the ability and skill of one who had played basketball all his life. When he got his hands on the ball he invariably made a basket. Stanley Huit Center Stan made a perfect man on the basketball team. He never gave up once and when things seemed to be going hardest he would change the whole course of events to our advantage. A Roy Rathman Guard Eddie showed basketball fans that he was a real guard and a. fighter. His playing was the sure fighting kind that helps Win games. Richard Forrest Forward Dick was substitute and fully competent to do his part. He also will be a Basketeerl' next year for Delta High School. Raymond Baker Manager Fat filled the position of basketball manager for the Gold and White. His hard work and loyalty prevailed throughout the season. DELTA-LIBERTY CENTER Delta dropped its third league game when the Orange and Black of Liberty Center downed them by a score of 13-24. DELTA-MONTPELIER Deltals basketball team met Montpelier on their Hoot. Delta was no match for them as was shown by the score, 32-49. DELTA-NAPOLEON Delta,s game scheduled with Napoleon proved to be another defeat. The score was 22-24. DELTA-FULTON Delta gained a little more fighting spirit and gave us a little more exciting game. Not such a difference between the scores as before. 30-36. DELTA-SWANTON After a hard-fought and very evenly matched game, Delta won her first victory over Swanton by one point. The game was exciting to the very end which ended in a tie, 28-28 They played 3 extra periods to break the tie and finally ended by shooting fouls making it 44-42. DELTA-BRYAN Delta suffered its worst defeat from Bryan. They were no match for the Bryan quintet. The score was 5-36. DELTA-WAUSEON For the second time Delta faced their rivals. They were out for re- venge but the fates were against them giving Wauseon another victory. The score was 29-47. DELTA-MONTPELIER Delta played its last League game on its own Hoot. Consequently a Varsity D club was organized at Delta high school, composed of boys who are strong of mind, body and heart, boys who are fighting hard for our school, have learned the value of co-operation with the team, and fair play, boys who have taken the bitter with the sweet, the glory or defeat, sharing alike between themselves that which has been their lot. Of such a nature is our Varsity D in Delta. Any boy who has proved his worth by going out for a letter in any sport automatically becomes a member. At the present time there are boys in the club who do thier accomplishments in football, basketball and track. Some have one honor in one sport while many have shown ability to do the same in all sports. In another year we shall be giving letters in tennis and probably golf. DEL-HI -lDEL-HI1- MYSTERY HOUSE By HILLIARD CAMP Little was known about that old house in Adrian street when I first entered Delta high school. The boys had discovered one thing however: the house had been last occupied by an old doctor! whose name was Henry. If my memory is right his full name was Dr. Thomas Gregory Henry. But aside from this fact, the house and its history remained a mystery until early in my Junior year. Somehow, as the boys gathered together in the assembly room one autumn afternoon of my junior year the old house became the topic of conversation. Something within Ellsworth Ohlinger seemed to stir as he heard the only known thing about the house. Ella,,7 as the boys call him, was about five feet eight inches tall and weighed about one hundred eighty pounds. He was one of the best football players Delta high school ever had. Slim,,' Ella said to me, I, for one, am in favor of investigationf' Say, said Art Fish, Q'I've got an idea. Let's go out to that house tonight after football practice. Art was fullback on our team that year. It was his first year out but he was making good. The boys responded to Art's proposal and agreed to meet at the school-house immediately after practice. Since I was not a candidate for a berth on the football team I went home and did what work I could before returning. I arrived in time to see the boys come off the field and I followed them to the dressing room. As the boys dressed hurriedly they talked about the venture which they were soon to undertake. Little did any of the party realize what the venture was to bring forth. Before leaving the school-house the boys decided to choose a leader. We selected Stanley Huit, center on the varsity basketball team, as our leader. Then the party, about ten in number, started on its Way. For some reason we decided to approach quietly. I suppose none of the boys in that group would have been able to count the number of times he had been in that house, but that night we were determined that if there was a mystery about it we were going to find it. We organized a search of the house from top to bottom. We were to meet in front of the old house at eight o'clock. Ella, Huit, and I decided to go upstairs for our search. We ascended the stairs and began our investigation. Minutes passed and the search seemed to be fruitless. It was about five minutes before meeting time when, from one corner of the lPage Fifty-Ninel COMPLIMENTS OF Johnston Brothers Auto Supplies COMPLIMENTS OF Dr. McKee For the best of Dentistry Vulcanizing First, Last and Always COMPLIMENTS for OF Gehring's Drug Store DELTA HIGH The Beatty Barber Shop -I DEL.1-11 1- room I heard Huit utter a soft exclamation. Ella must have heard that word too and both of us were soon at Stanley's side. Look, he exclaimed pointing into an old delapidated cupboard. There, in the ruins of that -old relic of furniture, I saw a dusty, black book-the family Bible. We took the book from its place and descended to the main flo-or. In front of the house we found the others waiting for us. After leaving the old structure we toolc an inventory of our findings. Our party was the only one which had been successful. The others had found nothing but ruins which they had seen hundreds of times before. Huit and Ella decided to stay with me that night. Something within us that I cannot explain stirred as we turned the dusty black covers of that old book. Would it be just an ordinary Bible or would it contain something which would help solve the mystery of that old house? The boys broke training rules that night as we sat in my room pondering over the contents of that Bible. We found but one thing of interest to us. There had been born in that house on January 7, 1850, a girl who had been named Margaret Irene. Sometime between the years 1850 and 1929 that girl had disappeared. Where and when? That was the problem that faced us. One thing was certain. If we could solve that problem we could discover the mysterious secrets of that old house. We retired that night determined to re-visit the scene of our investigation. The next day was Saturday. We rounded the boys up and again visited the old house. We were not so quiet on this trip as we had been the night before. The mystery of the old place failed to impress the boys on this occasion. Huit, Ella, and I had not revealed our secret about the girl to the other members. After a half hour's search all the fellows left with the exception of Huit, Ella and me. We had decided to spend our day in that pile of ruins which to us held so much mystery. It must have been nearing the noon hour when we decided to climb the stairs and visit that old cupboard again. We ascended the stairs. I went directly to the cupboard but Huit and Ella decided to survey the sur- roundings again. As I neared the cupboard something attracted my attention. There on the top shelf I saw a man's cap. There was no doubt in my mind. That cap had not been there the night before and it did not belong to any of our party. I called the boys to my side and revealed my discovery. We hurriedly decided that the man had not been gone long and that he must have intended to return. With this idea in mind we went noiselessly to the head of the stairs and hid behind the wall which, on ei'her side, came to the edge of the top step. Huit and I stood on one side. Ella occupied the other. I shudder yet as I think of that dreadful silence. The lPage Sixty-OneT COMPLIMENTS OF GOLDSMITH BROS. Every muscle in my body ached, yet I did not dare to move. I cannot describe that dreadful silence. Here was our chance to capture the man who could reveal the mystery. That one point was the only thing which made it possible to bear our pain. Suddenly our ears caught the sound of soft footsteps in the ruins belo-w. My heart beat with a strangeness that I had never felt before and have not felt since. The visitor stopped as he reached the foot of the stairs. Without a doubt he was listening for sounds from our direction. We did not move. Then slowly he began to ascend the stairs. As he entered the room I saw Ella take one look at him and then, with the swiftness I have often seen him display on the cinder path, I saw him send a terrific blow to the visitoris jaw. His head went back and he staggered. But our opponent was not the kind to give up in one blow. He rushed at Ella and, ducking as that individual tried another blow at his jaw, he sent a terrific right hook to Ella's jaw which raised our companion off his feet and sent him crashing to the floor. He did not get up. With this Huit and I entered into the fight. Wisely we attacked him from opposite sides. We managed to hold him off for some time but at last I saw my companion fall. He, also, was the victim of our opponent's right hook. The light was now up to me. I realized that if my two companions had been unable to stand against this man, it was almost hopeless for me to try. Yet, here was the chance to learn the greatest mystery in the town of Delta. Suddenly another plan came to me. I did not get close to my opponent but just kept circling about him. I knew that sooner or later he would rush at me. My only hope was that the idea I had in mind would work. My opponent began rushing me, and I found it more and more difficult to keep out of reach. Then, as if answer to my prayers, I saw Ohlinger Hy through the air. My opponent's feet went out from under him and he hit the floor with a thud. My plan had worked. There will never be a more beautiful tackle made on a football field than Ella made that day in the upper room of that old house. Both of us were on top of our opponent in a moment. We remained in this position until Huit regained consciousness. He hurried to the neighbors and called the marshall and deputy. Within a few minutes they came and took our visitor to jail. We returned to my house that evening bruised and weary from the adventures of the day. We went to bed early and soon were fast asleep, dreaming of the success we had achieved. The trial of the mysterious man was held the following Saturday. lPage Sixty-Threel COMPLIMI-:NTS OF F. M. LONGNECKER WITH EVERY GOOD WISH TO FACULTY AND STUDENTS OF DELTA HIGH SCHOOL -L DEL-H1 1- It was found that he was a member of a criminal ring which had its meetings in this old house. The doctor who had last occupied it had inherited a million-dollar estate from a great uncle. He had been given poison and his young daughter taken away. She knew nothing of her father and soon became accustomed to the gang. She died a few years after our discovery and willed her fortune which had been returned to her, to Huit, Ella, and me. All the fellows in that old gang have now grown into manhood. Ohlinger married his schoolday sweetheart and Huit is a prosperous in- surance man in our town. The old house has fallen in ruins but it still remains to haunt us with its mystery. I shall never forget what we went through to learn its secrets. ii THE sHoRT sToRY coNTEsT The Annual Short Story Contest created a great deal of interest this year.
