7 When Pierre S. duPont High School opened in 1935, no trees surrounded the building. At the suggestion of Mr. Ralph L. Talbot, principal of the school, each graduating class since 1936 has planted a pin oak tree on the campus of the school. The pin oak was chosen by Miss Violet Findley for its strength and its enduring look. ipip i ri trii ' Keeping in mind the traditional tree planting ceremony, we have chosen to use trees as our theme for this 1959 PIERREAN. We have tried to illustrate, by using a tree, our growth, not only as a class, but also as individuals. The strength of the oak will remind us of the famous saying by David Everett, Tall oaks from little acorns grow. Now we, too, like our symbolic tree, are ready to branch out into newer and larger fields. gdwwa.

I I I I I We, the members of the graduating class of nineteen hundred and fi-fty-nine, dedicate this our yearbook to Dr. Ward Ira Miller, educator, humanitarian, and friend. When the members of our class were being enrolled in kindergarten thirteen years ago, Dr. Miller became Superintendent of the Wilmington Public Schools. Under his guidance and direction the public schools of our city have advanced to a top-ranking position in the nation. Dr. Miller received a Bachelor of Arts Degree in 1914 and a Master of Arts Degree in 1915 from the University of Denver. Except for a period of two years of military service in World War 1, he has devoted his professional life since graduation to the field of education. In 1941 Dr. Miller earned the degree of Doctor of Education from Teachers' College, Columbia University. Num- erous charity, service, educational, and youth organizations in the community, state, and nation have benefited from Dr. Millerls able assistance as member, director, or advisor. He has taken the time to attend almost every important function of our class including receptions, special assemblies, and awards banquets. On these oc- casions Dr. lVliller's congratulations, together with a few words of friendly counsel and encouragement, have been an inspiration to all of us. To him our class extends sincere and hearty thanks for his contributions to our education.
