A 7 When Pierre S. duPont High School opened in 1935, no trees surrounded the building. At the suggestion of Mr. Ralph L. Talbot, principal of the school, each graduating class since 1936 has planted a pin oak tree on the campus of the school. The pin oak was chosen by Miss Violet Findley for its strength and its enduring look. ipip i ri trii ' Keeping in mind the traditional tree planting ceremony, we have chosen to use trees as our theme for this 1959 PIERREAN. We have tried to illustrate, by using a tree, our growth, not only as a class, but also as individuals. The strength of the oak will remind us of the famous saying by David Everett, Tall oaks from little acorns grow. Now we, too, like our symbolic tree, are ready to branch out into newer and larger fields. gdwwa. I I I I I We, the members of the graduating class of nineteen hundred and fi-fty-nine, dedicate this our yearbook to Dr. Ward Ira Miller, educator, humanitarian, and friend. When the members of our class were being enrolled in kindergarten thirteen years ago, Dr. Miller became Superintendent of the Wilmington Public Schools. Under his guidance and direction the public schools of our city have advanced to a top-ranking position in the nation. Dr. Miller received a Bachelor of Arts Degree in 1914 and a Master of Arts Degree in 1915 from the University of Denver. Except for a period of two years of military service in World War 1, he has devoted his professional life since graduation to the field of education. In 1941 Dr. Miller earned the degree of Doctor of Education from Teachers' College, Columbia University. Num- erous charity, service, educational, and youth organizations in the community, state, and nation have benefited from Dr. Millerls able assistance as member, director, or advisor. He has taken the time to attend almost every important function of our class including receptions, special assemblies, and awards banquets. On these oc- casions Dr. lVliller's congratulations, together with a few words of friendly counsel and encouragement, have been an inspiration to all of us. To him our class extends sincere and hearty thanks for his contributions to our education. To the Class of 1959 I shall long remember with gratitude your many kindnesses, and I trust that l have been able to give some values in return. At the same time, may I offer you the life-long challenge that commencement, a milestone in your growing up, really is. I think I can no more briefly sum it up than to challenge you with the school's motto, BE UPRIGHT, as you take your place and face your next steps in our ever-changing world. Principal ' Congratulations, Class of ,59. The reward for your respon- sibility in keeping this graduation appointment is more responsibility. Continue to strive for God's approval, and the successful life will continue to be yours. These good old daysfi which are packed with all kinds of potential, are the most exciting and demanding that the world has ever experienced. Do not allow yourselves to be misled in your confidences and trusts. Be wary of those who think that they are courageous and brave when they are merely unruly. Keep your high standards and your worthwhile goals. Know that obstacles are only those things you see when you lose sight of these goals. Dean of Boys dmch aww My best wishes go with you as you leave the Pierre S. duPont High School. I dare you to continue to grow and learn so that your graduation may be but the beginning of an era of greater opportunity to serve and share, and as larger capacity for creative thinking and hard work. l know that each of you will face the problems of your future with honor and courage. May your life be filled with the joy of true achievement. Sincerely. u Af Administrative Assistant To the Class of 1959: As you meet the challenges of new experiences and assume responsibilities. so will your Alma Mater be weighed in the balance. We are confident that the world of the future will be better because of your leadership and contributions to the welfare of mankind. Sincerely yours, ffacfaffwal Dean of Girls The program in high-school English is designed to help the student understand his language and use it effectively. As he studies English, he develops his ability to think clearly, to read skillfully, to express thoughts accurately, to listen intelligently, and to enjoy and evaluate literature. He is encouraged to satisfy his intellectual curiosity and is given an opportunity to exercise leadership and crea- tive ability. S. seemed to many of us who entered in our sophomore year! Miss Alice E. Gardiner, our class sponsor, helped us with our Sophomore Reception for parents, teachers, and students. Our tenth grade class party with good entertainment, and refreshments was a huge success. Spring soon came, and we found ourselves sponsoring the annual Memorial Day Assembly. Our class officers were: Howard Hudson, Judy Langlcammerer, Sandra Poole, and Richard MeElmoyle. JUNIOR YEAR l The first semester was led by Howard Hudson, Judy Langkammerer, J Dorothy Wilson, and Richard McElmoyle, who conducted the annual Thanksgiving Day Assembly. In January our class produced the first Junior play in the history of the school. In the spring many honors came to our class: Daniel Ballbach repre- sented us at Boys' Stateg Patricia Said and Margaret Whitworth repre- sented us at Girls' Stateg Daniel Ballbach received both the Harvard Book Award and the Wally Wroten Trophy. Elizabeth Belden and Dana Downing were selected as American Field Service Candidates to Europe. SENIOR YEAR In our class this year we were pleased to have Hinnerk Brandi, Almut Stenger, and Jurgen Thewes, as exchange students from Germany. I In the fall we presented a successful Senior Reception for our parents, and teachers. Our class officers were Douglas Watson, Cecile Shames, Margaret Whitworth, and Howard Hudson. When college boards and mid years were behind us, we found it was time for our tree planting ceremony and our crazy senior morning assembly. Our prom and commencement ended our high school careers and made a good beginning for us up the 'gtree of lifef, , , 'fs , g f 4 -f ? ,VVf:.. As We planted our pin oak tree in April, so in these years We have planted seeds of learning, friendliness, sportsmanship, and sincerity. If we should return in ten years, we hope, that like our tree, we will have grown in strength, beauty, and truth. As we had help in planting our tree, we also had help in planting seeds of character. We are grateful, especially to Miss Lois McKay, Miss Amy Wocko, and Miss Alice Gardiner, our staff advisors, for their Wise and steady counsel. We pledge our devotion to the ideas planted with us.
