The name Minneshosho de- signates Muddy Water -- Minne meaning water, and shosho standing for the muddy territory. The name itself is what the Indians called the muddy Missouri River. In the beginning of this celebration, a parade was held and a banquet was served afterward. In 1933, the first snake dance was held and the first bon-fire organized. It was not until 1934 that Sue Stafford, the first Minneshosho Queen, and George Thorpe, the first Marshal were chosen, and this has come to be a custom every year since then. Now, Minneshosho Day starts out with a b ig snake dance consisting of Junior and Senior High school students who are full of pep and school spirit. They wind their way through the streets of Pierre and stop at the football stadium, after being led there by the Pierre High Band. After everyone arrives, the Homecoming Queen lights the bon-fire, while the students cheer. The bon-fire and snake dance are held after the coronation of the queen which has moved from the school to the city auditorium. The following day the parade is held along with a pep meeting which is followed in the evening by the Homecoming game, one of the most important activities of the year. 69 minq (I)f 3Hcart6 The annual King of Hearts Dance, held February 4th, in the Masonic Temple ivas sponsored by the Job ' s Daughters . They began nine, long months of hard work and study, but lots of fun. There are five new teachers this year. They are Mrs. Blaess, home econom- ics; Mrs. Cash, English; Miss Ann Hanten, geography; Miss Irene Hanten, English; Mrs. Sneve, English and music. Donald Hoffman was elected mayor for the year by the student body. We certainly are proud of Terry Woodward, a Freshman, who has given a very good exhibition in sports this year. He was on both the A ' squad basketball and football teams. The only Christmas program given this year was the one by the chorus at the auditorium with the Senior High. Christmas vacation provided a welcome break from school for both the teach- ers and the students. School resumed on January 3, 1956. The traditional Governor ' s Day was held on Febraury 24. The student body elected Judy Cleveland, Secretary of State, and Terry Woodward, Lt. Governor. Now the year is about over, and we are hopefully looking forward to Sports Day, and three LONG months of vacation. 87 I. Dennis? 2. Queen of the beasts 3. Quarcer-Cook 4.
