The 1954 Pierre Governor football team posted one of the best records to be recorded in the history of PHS. The Governors achieved a record of 9 wins against only 1 loss. The Governors started the ball rolling with a 6 to victory over the Huron Tigers. This was the first time a Pierre team had beaten Huron in football since 1943. The next victim of the Governors was Winner, who fell 26 to 12 before the up and coming Governors. The following week brought a highly favored Lead team to town. Trailing 13 to at the half, the Governors poured on the steam and took a 28 to 13 victory. The Onida Warriors came next. The Governors scalped them 51 to 0. To climax a perfect homecoming, the Governors dropped the Miller Rustlers 19 to 6. Lemmon came next, 39 to 0, followed by Redfield, 40 to 7, and Gettysburg, 39 to 0. The highlight of the season brought together a clash of two undefeated teams, with the CSD championship at stake. The Governors did it again, dropping Mobridge 20 to 7. The last game of the season saw the Governors edged from the ranks of the undefeat- ed, as Mitchell topped them 34 to 32. They came back strong, but failed by two points. This game, even though lost, shows what kind of a team the Governors were. It shows the fighting spirit of a team that never gave up. 42 THIS PAGE SPONSORED BY THE PIERRE LANES SENIOR LETTERMEN Chuck Aase Lee McKee Bob Cox Mark Frazee Ed Tegland Jim Poulos 43 SENIOR LETTERMEN Roger Hunsley Bob Warder Tom Young Frank Capin ... miK i Bud Hoffman Gordon Martinson 44 COACHES SEASON ' S STATISTICS PIERRE Scoring 229 First Downs 125 Yards gained rushing 2495 Yards gained passing 830 Total yards gained 3325 Passes attempted 112 Passes completed 54 Fumbles 29 Opponents ' fumbles recovered.. 16 Punts 20 Punting average 35 Yards penalized 495 Coach Trautner, Assistant Van Alstyne, Assistant Dafnis % B SQUAD OPPONENTS 79 76 1373 550 1923 104 36 24 11 34 32 145 ROW ONE: C.
