The Pierre Governors missed an undefeated season by only one game agsln this season for the thlrd consecutive year. Their only mark in the loss column was hand- ed to them by the Miller Rustlers, a team com- posed almost entlrely of senlors. On the wln- ning slde of the ledger, the Governors were credlted with slx wlns, downing berlain, Lead, Wlnner, Mobrldge The finale with Belle Fourche by an early snow storm. The Green and White showed Huron, Cham- and Lemmon. was cancelled a runnlng alt- tack which demolished the enemy defenses. It was lead by Don Hoffman, the fourth star to emerge from the Hoffman famlly, and Dennis Gus Kayser. Hoffman paced the club ln scor- ing, yards galned, most carries, and average yards gained: Kayser was runnerup for most of the honors. The backfleld was rounded out by Francis Brink and Gary Sellers. Both were consistent ball earrlers and exceptional on de- fenss. Brlnk handled most of the passlng chores for the Governors and 'dld a credible job of keeping the defense honest although the Governors ran much more than they passed. Hls primary tar- get was Terry Woodward who snared 17 of the 22 passes that were completed by the club. Jim Forney held down the other wlng on of- fense and dld a good job of blocking. John Luecke and Larry Myers at the tackles, Jerry Roberts and Harvey Thompson at guards, and Pat Murphy at center all dld great jobs of open- Ing up holes for the backfle-Id men to sprint through. The defense was especially flne, holding the opponents to an average of only slx polnts a game. Biggest defensive factor was tackle Juecke. He was the pillar of strength around which the defense was molded. Thompson and J. W. Baxter at the ends were both outstanding, carrying passes to no end. Roberts and Forney plugged up the middle of the line with their flne defensive play. Fred Mathews held down the other defensive tackle spot. - Sellers, Brink and Myers played steady de- fvnslve games at the llne-backer posltlons and Kayser and Woodward played double safety. For the senlors lt meant the thlrd frustratlon in their search for an undefeated season. They were downed by Mitchell ln 1954, Huron ln 1956 and Mlller burst the bubble this year. Francis Brink and John Luecke were hono-r- ary co-captains of the club. 09341, ...S s enior Jeffermen Plerre Governors had one of the strongest defenses ln South Dakota football clrcles thls season and much ofthe credlt belongs to John Luecke. He recelved due recognltlon or he was chosen as flrst strlng All-State tackle. It was the flrst such honor bestowed on a Plerre student and a flttlng tribute to the terror of ball carriers throughout the state. Luecke welghs in at 2l2 and, as any opposing tackle wlll tell you, ls practlcally lmmovable. He was constantly ln the opposltlon's backfleld, knocking their ball carrlers for losses. Hls defensive ability can be demonstrated by two games this year. In the flrst game of the year the Governors met their rivals the Huron Tlgers. In the second quarter Luecke was ln on seven tackles ln a row. Agalnst Mlller Luecke moved from his tackle spot to mlddle llne-backer to try and plug the gap as the Rustlers were galnlng huge chunks of yardage through the mlddle. Luecke plugged up the hole but his loss was sorely felt at the tackle spot when the Rustlers moved through there. Luecke ls a flne leader and was elected honorary co-captain of the club at the end ofthe year. He shared the honor wlth Francls Brink. He was also chosen as presldent of the cholr, and ls throw- Ing the weights thls year for the Governor's thlnclads. He plans to attend college but has not made up hlsmlnd where he wlll go. He has had football scholarships offered hlm by Nebraska, Colorado, lndlana, Kansas and the Unlverslty of South Dakota. Hoffman's out dlstancing hls fellow runners In the backfleld ls shown by the statlstlca. He galn- ed 500 yards In 68 attempts for an average of 7.3 yards per carry, while scorlng 44 polnts. Kayser trailed the sophomore In scorlng with 36 polnts, ln yards galned with 357 yards and In carrles wlth 63 attempts. Blll Jonas, a top fllght substitute, was second ln average yards galned with 6.1 yards per carry. The Governors plled up 195 polnts whlle al- lowlng their opposition only 42 polnts. They averaged 27.6 polnts yer game to slx for the enemy. The Governors accumulated 1,947 yards galned for an average of 278 yards a game. 1560 of the ards were made on the round 1 Y U wlth only 387 yards com-Ing on passes. The Flustlers handed the home club two of the losses including one In the sectional tourna- ment that knocked the Governors out of the running for a state tourney berth. Miller' had ruined an almost perfect football season for the Governors by downing them on the Gov- ernors own homecoming day. The Green and White not only lost at horne- coming but lost the Governor's Cup to Bismarck in a thriller that was decided In the final seconds. The Governors opened the season at Lead and were immediately clo-bbered by the Gold- diggers, but they roared back from the sting of defeat like veterans to beat Deadwood the following night and to go on to wln 12 games in a row before they met Mlller for the first time. The Governors used malnly six men during most of the season. They were Terry Wood- ward, Pat Murphy, Dick Bad Moccasin, Jim Brown, Jim Forney and Ken Smith. They were backed up by Tom LaVelIe, Don Hoffman, J. W. Baxter, Art Krull, Dave Quim- by and Dennis Kayser. Bad Moccasin put on one of the great lndl- vidual efforts of the year when he poured 30 polnts through the hoop as the Governors down- ed Mandan. He was also hlgh polnt man for the year with 304 points for an average of 15.2 points per game. Woodward followed close on his hee-ls with 290 points for 14.5 points per game. Woodward played good defensive ball, knock- ing shots out of the air on many occasions. Murphy and Brown alternated as playmaker on the club. Forney was a steady performer and the captain of the club. Smlth rose to great heights on occasion such as the first Mlller game. The Governors were on a whole one of the strongest defensive teams ln South Dakota. They allowed 792 points ln 20 games for an average of only 39.6 points per game, an aver- age that will not win many games in South Dakota circles. Sfarfing fue .,, .N ,. In 1956 this goal was accomplished. A bronze trophy of Sitting Bull. designed by Oscar Howe, Pierre's ac- claimed art teacher, is awarded to the winning capital, and a white buffalo skull to the losers. These trophies are kept until the next game the follow- 1ng year. This year the Pierre student body went to Bismarck. They were given a very warm reception by the Bismarck High School student council w o had the weekend all planned for the Pierre students. This plan included a tour of Bismarck, a very nice dance after the game, and on Saturday, a guided tour of the beautiful capital building. The royalty representing Pierre were John Luecke as Representative Governor, and Karen Thode as First Lady. Both Pierre and Bismarck have succeeded in making friendly relations between the two schools, and there is a feeling of good sportsmanship and keen competition between the teams. We hope this feeling will continue throughout the years, and that the Bismarck-Pierre Governor's Day will gain importance for the good will it has established. oy.4 anal girk .sjfafelui Robert Rentto John Pellet I Thomas LaVa1le Leland Gordon James Wyly ' Faye 'Sta.1ley Dorothy He dman ,W unior .jcwaniarw 'FN U Jerry Robdrts DiCk Crow Franvis Brink John Luecke unior pofarian5 .
