VVILLIAM HUDSON, CUSTODIAN We dedicate this Legend to Mr. Hudson, who devoted 12 lf2 years of service to our school. He was always near when needed The extra work demanded by both students and teachers was cheerfully accepted. He was a friend to all, and his cheery whistle and laugh added a pleasant note to the hubhub routine of school. Truly, we shall never forget his kindness and the generous portion of his time given to our school. The Class of 1958 started the 2nd act in their drama of life in September, 1946. Not all started at the same school or at the same time but destiny eventually brought the cast of 18 players together for the final curtain of the second act which went down on May 27, 1958. They have their entrances and their exits each man in his time plays many parts, Shakespeare continues. So also the members of the class which has become the Class of 1958 have had their entrances and exits throughout the twelve scenes. The permanent cast has been Beth Campbell, Patty Leonard, Ioyce Nelson, Caroline Case, Laura Dain, Bill Brown, Barney Fenton, Pat Holden, Ed Strock, Bob Richcreek, and Iack Fitzer. There have been many who have entered only to give a brief performance - exit again. Those who entered to remain permanently were Perry Millard, scene 37 Ed Fenton, scene 37 Ianet Kapis, scene 57 Ellen Dain, scene 67 Beverly Coy, scene 97 Henrietta Dewey, scene 111 and Charles Dain, scene 12. During this play we have had 9 directors. Each of them in their turn tried to teach us the rules we must use to playin the drama of life. These directors were: Mrs. Derry, scene 17 Mrs. Cork, and Mrs. Porter, scene 27 Mrs. Carlson, scenes 3 6: 47 Mrs. Collingwood, scenes 5 6: 67 Mr. DeMarco, scenes 6 61 77 Mr. Couch, scene 87 Mr. Gregory, scenes 9 61 107 Mrs. Fee, scene 112 and Mrs. Kobernik, scene 12. Until the time we entered high school most of the parts were of equal length. From the 9th scene to the 12th the main parts were given to the class officers. The officers in the 9th scene were: President, Ioyce Nelson7 Vice President, Bob Richcreek7 Secretary, Ellen Dain: Treasurer, Barney Fenton. In the 10th scene the main parts were given to: President, Bob Richcreek7 Vice President, Beth Campbell: Secretary, Ellen Dain: Treasurer, Pat Holden. In the 11th scene the parts were given to: President, Ioyce Nelson7 Vice President, Jack Fitzer7 Secretary, Patty Leonard7 Treasurer, Beth Campbell. In this scene we formed our club to raise money for our class trip. We gave a prom for the seniors with Fantasia as the theme. Our Iunior play was a 3-act Melodrama entitled The Curse of an Aching Heart. During the last scene of this play we all worked very hard to earn money for our trip to New York City and also to make sure we would graduate. The leading parts of this scene were given to: President, Henrietta Dewey7 Vice President, Bob Richcreek7 Secretary, Patty Leonard7 Treasurer, Beth Campbell. Our senior play was again a comedy, Meet Me in St. Louis. For our farewell appearance on May 27, Ioyce Nelson was chosen Valedictorian and Henrietta Dewey Salutatorian. Class Prophecy I was sitting on the front steps of my trailer home, watching my husband, Ralph, and my two sons playing ball. The date was May 27, 1968. It was exactly ten years since my graduation. Iwondered where the rest of my class had gone. We had had so much fun together and it didn't seem right that we should separate and never meet again. I had not seen any of the ' class of 58 for several years. But, being a housewife of questionable enthusiasm, I gave up that strenuous activity of thinking, and went back inside. I tried to find a good book, but the only one I could find was Shakespeare's MACBETH, which I had already read. Since it was all I had, I settled down in an easy chair with the book, a glass of milk, and three sandwiches lone peanut butter and two jel- lies.j I had read perhaps 15 pages before I fell asleep and began to dream ..................... I was in a deep woods on a very foggy, wet night. Before me was a roaring fire with a huge iron kettle hung over lt. Three witches in long, black, ragged, gowns danced around it giggling and chanting, Double, double, toil and trouble: Fire burn, and caldron bubble. I tried to move but couldn't and I discovered that I was tied to a tree. I let out a yell like bloody murder and the witches stopped prancing around and came towards me. Though their faces were smoke-blackened and they had long straggly hair, I recognized them. They were three former teachers from Pierpont High, Mrs. Fee, Mrs. Kobernik, and Mr. Simpson. Mrs. Kobernlk drew out a long knife and cut my bonds. Then they dragged me up to the kettle. I looked in but the steam fogged up my glasses and I didn't see a thing. I could hear the water bubbling and boiling. My heart almost stopped beating and at that moment, I almost wished that it would. Mrs. Fee jerked off my glasses and threw them on the ground and jumped up and down on them. When my eyes got used to the steam I saw that the pot was filled with soup and meat balls, the meat balls being partially cooked heads. I counted 17 and shuddered. There were my 17 classmates, for at least part of them.j I was the last member of the classl I was next! They apparently wanted to torture me a little bit because they dragged me back to the tree. They dldn't bother tying me up. I was too scared to run, anyway. Mrs. Kobernik brought out the long bladed knife again and calmly began sharpening it, humming while she worked. Mr. Simpson took a notebook from his ragged robe and began calling names out to Mrs. Fee who was poking around in the kettle with a big spoon. I Campbell, Beth, called Mr. Simpson. Check, said Mrs. Fee, after fishing around for a moment. Richcreek, Bob, said Mr. Simpson, marking off Campbell on the paper. Rlght on top, chuckled Mrs. Fee. They went on through the whole list and told me something about each one as they did so. BETH CAMPBELL had become a school teacher as she had planned. After college she went back to Pierpont and taught the second grade at the old school. She was not well liked because she often lost her temper and threw all the crayons out the window. At least once a week she had to buy a whole new round of pencils to replace the ones she had broken in two. BOB RICHCREEK took music lessons and learned how to play the steel guitar. He started his own band and soon became popular all over the country. His theme song was a rock and roll number he had written entitled, The Poor River Blues. PATTY LEONARD never got married as was expected. Instead, she went to a business school and learned to be a stenog- rapher. She got a job in a big insurance company and then proceeded to enjoy a carefree life to make up for her five years of going steady. ED STROCK became a truck driver for the Sealy Mattress Company. He hauled Sealy Poster-Pedics all over the country for people with aching backs. His home, where he lived with his wife and 3 children, was in Paine svllle. JOYCE NELSON became a missionary in Africa. She was stranded in the jungle once and had to walk 27 miles to the near- est village. She married a young minister from Massachusetts, and spent part of her time with him. PAT HOLDEN joined the Air Force and became a jet pilot. He got a job as a stunt pilot in a movie about jet airplanes. He ran out of gas over a lake and nearly drowned, so he quit flying. He established a dry cleaning business in Beverly Hills. BEVERLY COY joined the Mills Bros. Circus as a high wire artist. One of her thrilling acts was a jump from the highest ladder in the big top.- She fell 80 feet where she caught a swinging trapeze bar by her teeth. The first time she did it her teeth came out, so thereafter she used glue. BARNEY FENTON used his stature and weight to his advantage. He found a good sit-down job as a horse jockey. Unfor- tunately he chose a horse with the name, Bubblegum , who lived up to his name. He always stuck to the rear. IANET KAPIS went to the Patricia Stevens Finishing School and became a model. Her picture was in all the best fashion magazines, when she modeled the new sack style bathing suits. IACK FITZER WROTE A newspaper column for the NEW YORK TIMES. He criticized new movies, old movies, plays, people, songs, and just about everything else that was legal. He made a fortune on a book called, How To Live and Be Bored but he threw it all away on a chorus girl. LAURA DAIN started out as a nurse but decided she didn't want to spend the rest of her life being bossed around, so she became a medical doctor instead. She opened up her new office in Conneaut and proceeded to take all the patients from the old doctors. PERRY MILLARD owned the most modern dairy farm in the state of Ohio. He built it up with the money his rlch uncle left him: he and his wife, Iudy, lived leisure lives while the hired men did all the work. ELLEN DAIN married her sailor boy finally, but it took her three years to make up her mind. During that time she worked as a shoe shine girl for President Eisenhower. She was fired by the new pre sldent so she married Bob and moved to Kinsman. ED FENTON became a finger print expert for the F. B.I. He had started out as a private eye but every time he was shad- owing a suspect he giggled and gave himself away so he had to abandon that dangerous career. CHARLES DAIN re-enlisted in the Marine Corps. He intended to make a career of it but was thrown in the brig several times for misbehaving so he finally gave it up. He went back to work on the Marcy Farm. HENRIETTA DEWEY gave up her nursing career for marriage. She had two children, Edgar, in honor of an old boy friend, and Henrietta, in honor of herself. She had a job as a soda jerk in her spare time. BILL BROWN went down to Florida for good. There, he became a barber and hair stylist in an exclusive men's beauty parlor. After a few month's bickering with finlcky customers, his own hair fell out. 1 That was the end. They had gone through the whole list. Now, it was my turnl Mrs. Kobernik had finished the knife and it was all nice and sharp. The knife flashed and I felt blood running down my neck ..... . ........... I woke up! I found I had spilled my glass of milk all over myself. It was such a terrifying dream that I was weak all o- ver and I nearly fell down when I tried to get up. I hoped my classmates had as good lives as I had dreamed but I was certain- ly glad they had not, ended that way. BOB RICHCREEK Class Poem We are the class of '58, To leave our school, we shall hate. And when we are old and grey at last, We'1l want to look back and remember the past. So in order to make it a humorous chore, I'll list each classmate, his name and his lore. A poem for each, a word of his fame, And I'll go one by one, in order of name. BILL BROWN is tall, handsome, and dark, He likes to go South just for a lark. Each Spring he returns, his face golden tan, He gets all the girls--or all that he can. Agile BETH CAMPBELL likes to play ball, She rides horses but never does fall. She scornes a dress, would rather wear pants, She enjoys herself, but not at a dance. CAROLINE CASE is a girl who tries hard to sing, Third finger, left hand, sports a fine ring. She's lots of friends, who all will agree, She no longer is foot-loose and fancy free. BEVERLY COY is little and sweet, Her stature is short, her figure is neat. She loves to dance, her skill will amaze you, And her tongue's rapid pace will certainly daze you. CHARLES DAIN is a man, apart from the boys, He'S been a Marine, a joke he enjoys. He tries hard to please, he does all he can, To help a good friend, he'd cut off a hand. ELLEN DAIN'S dark eyes makes hearts a'flutter, Her looks and her laugh melts them to butter. She likes the Navy, why we can't say, She cares not for rules, she'd rather just play. LAURA DAIN, God bless her, is a wonderful gal, She likes all the girls, but Diane's her best pal. Nursing's her choice, to take her through life, Her smile will see her through all of it's strife. Next is the President, HENRE DEWEY'S her handle, Her trail is straight, her heart is her candle. She is quite good at this and quite good at that, To name them all is like taming a bat. 24 BARNEY FENTON is little but never mind that, He has more life than any ten cats. He plays ball of all shapes and kinds, When he leaves a place, there are six friends behind. EDWARD LEE FENTON'S an artistic lad, If you want to see a rare thing, try to find him sad. His bright, infectious laughter, makes for fun galore, But when time comes for homework, his spirits are lower SHERMAN IACK PITZER follows, of course, He argues his views with very great force. He usually seems to be tired and bored, With students and teachers on every accord. PATRICK KLINE HOLDEN is a marvelous boy, Who always brings teachers cheer and great joy, He laughs a great deal land talks a bit, tool Sometimes won't wait till teachers are through. Pat is followed by KAPIS, IANET'S her name, She's gained renown and far-and-wide fame. She talks long and loud in an effortless style, She doesn't like homework, it dims her big smile. PAT LEONARD'S the girl who makes friends everywhere, Her bright shining face takes away every care? Her best friend is Beth, she has no best beau, She has lots of dates, her spirits aren't low. Young PERRY MILLARD is a basketball man, He takes his life easy, does as little as he can. Perry likes all girls, whether blonde or brunette, He works as a farmer, he might be one, yet. IOYCE NELSON'S a great girl, a real fashion plate, She does her assignments, she's never too late. She cheers for the team and plays in the band, She's a good worker, let's give her a hand. BOB RICHCREEICS the lad who is always asleep, Homework and assignments don't make him weep. He reacts very calmly, just doesn't do either, He works hard at home, comes to school for -a breather. ED STROCK is tall with short brownish hair, Takes more than a girl to give his a scare. If when you meet him, you think he is shy, Don't give it a thought. tHe isn't, that's whyll Caroline Case 5 war'-Q WNW? n 8+ iff? f W 5 g11g 2. 3 g QW nl Q: ey, ik 5' t ,- Q my it y P1 f 'ir 2 4 f ,QWPKV ,gif RCW P' M ,f ,, . s ,M It mtfw J sf' +P . Meet Me In St. Louis The Senior Class Play, Meet Me ln St. Louis, was a three act comedy by Sally Benson. It was a costume play, which took place at the time of the World's Fair in St. Louis. It was the story of the Smith family and their problems. The girls, who tried to break up their brother's affair with an eastern girl, succeeded in getting their father fired. How they solved their problems made a very interesting and hilarious play. Mr. Smith . . Mrs. Smith . Rose .... Esther . . Agnes . . Tootie ...... Lon ....... Grandpa Prophater Katie ....... The Junior Class presented a comedy in three acts on March 28, entitled So Very Young by Dana Thomas. The play was directed by Mr. Simpson with the assist- ance of Joyce Nelson. The play told about the problems of a 17 year old girl who wanted to get married. Her parents were dead set against it at first. But as the play progressed, their will slowly changed, so that by the end of the play, both parents gave their consent to the marriage. r Ann Chambers . . Edith Chambers . . . . Myron Chambers . . .
