The Editor, Advisor and Annual Staff Present to You, the Student, THE 1970-71 ECHOES THEME The characters Charlie Brown, Snoopy, Schroeder, Lucy and Pig Pen make up the group also known as The Peanuts Gang . Cartoonist Charles Schultz fills his strip with the comical situations of the group. He has brought about the famous happiness statement which illustrates the simple, uncomplicated joys of a child and what makes hi m happy. Happiness is defined as a feeling of satisfaction and pleasure, butit is really un- definable, for it can mean so many different things depending on a person ' s viewpoint. Happiness may come in any shape or form; be material or non-ma- terial. There is really no specific meaning of the word. The theme of the 1970-71 Echoes is that of happiness. Every person on the staff has done his best and put in a lot of extra time to produce an annual which we hope you, the student, will enjoy. We sincerely hope the Echoes will be a happiness to each and every one of you. I also wish to take this opportunity to express my appreciation to Mrs. Kaye- Smith, my advisor; Michelle May, the assistant editor; and to Kris Carr, the copy chief; without whose devoted help I would not have been able to finish this production of the annual. Barb English, Editor 2 ANNUAL STAFF FIRST ROW (seated 1 to r): Barb English, Editor; Michelle May, Ass ' t Editor; Mrs. Kaye-Smith, Advisor; Kris Carr, Copy Chief; Betty Fulk, Deb Mitchell, Rosanne Barker. The Annual Staff worked very hard this year sharing rooms with the bookkeeping and typing classes which pre- vented the staff from working very much during the regular school day. Work sessions were then held on Mon- days after school with assignments being given on the preceding Thursdays during the last ten minutes of the second period. Old members having previous experience on the staff were assigned layouts with the new mem- bers and could provide help if problems arose. Much extra time and effort was put in by many members provid- ing for an all-in-all good production of this year ' s annual. 3 DEDICATION 1924 to 1971 To all students — also teachers, staff and graduates- -who have passed through these doors, we dedicate this last issue of THE ECHOES. Happiness is--memories. The days may come, the days may go, But still the hands of mem ' ry weave the blissful dreams of long ago. --George Cooper, SWEET GENEVIEVE 4 jpiness is . when people are interested in studying. when you know you ' ve gotten your point across in class! when students are really excited about their classes and ready to begin when the bell rings. seventy-one ! having the building remodeled! seeing a conscientious student learn to do something worthwhile that they don ' t already know how to do. watching young people grow and mature and become responsible ! having former student come back to visit you! knowing students as friends and seeing them become concerned about people and their social problems. having mutual respect amongst students and teacher plus seeing the physical and mental development of the young men that have played ball for us at Pierceton. faith, contentment and optimism to enjoy the good days when things go so right and have faith that the disappointing days will not last. when student become fit for society! no exams or grades! opening up a box of new books. the satisfaction a teacher receives from knowing he or she may have had a small rol e in determining the future of the students they have taught! when students have all their assignment handed in on time ! being able to inspire a pupil to desire to attain his best and helping him progress in that direction! working with students who are willing to put forth an effort. 5 FACULTY FACULTY AND STAFF Principal Mr. R. Due to the building program, the band has moved from the gym floor to the stage, back to the gym floor, back to the stage, and finally to the fire station in the new Com- munity Building. With the building in various states of construction , it has been impossible to present any kind of musical program. The band played a short concert at the Alfran Nursing Home in Warsaw, presented a Christmas program for the student body, participated in solo and ensemble contest, and performed at the home basketball games. It is hoped that the music department (band) will be able to offer more in concerts and pro- grams in 1971-72 with the completion of the new facilities at Pierceton and South Whitley. 43 Left to right, 1st ROW: Becky Logan, Rhonda Harter, Deb Trump, Becky Helvey, Joni Mort, Cathy Harrison, Calvin Godwin, Steve Akers, Pat Stevens, Joe Mowrey, Vida Williams, Susan Schuldt, Norma Moran, Polly Howard, Lenora Wood. 2nd ROW: Joyce Garrett, Bev Bolt, Laura Rupert, Barb English, Sherry Stump, Londa Ellenwood, Steve Harris, Verlin Blair, Paul Engelberth, Alan Wise, Robin Porter, Cindy Blanchard, Carol Conley, Lynn Helfrich, Carol Creekmore, Chris Karr. 3rd ROW: Mary Howard, Diane Bruce, Margaret Valentine, Mi- chelle May, Kathy Flora, Yolanda Lugo, Rocky Stone, Larry Manuel, Chris Keener, Becky Rostochak, Leta Stickler, Twyla Mort, Deb Ruckman, Laura Myers, Kathy Mogensen. 4th ROW: Lisa Rood, Luanne Collier, Cathy Shear, Karen Flora, Connie Blanchard, Betty Fulk, Steve Biltz, Dick Carwile, Virginia Lahrman, Rosanne Barker, Mary Gross, Deb Shoemaker, Kay Porter, Kathy Maggart. 5th ROW: Sandy Peters, Mary Miller, Cindy Juillerat, Susan Stillson, Carol English, Sue Graham, Jeff Rager, Tim Collier, Brad Stahl, Julie Fry, Susie Riordan, Col- leen Collier, Marie Secor, Kathy Caudill, Marilyn Hoppus. 6th ROW: Deb Haywood, Linda Baker, Molly Myers, Juanita Wilson, Karen Orr, Mike Swartz, Randy Evans, Nelson Reed, Scott Langohr, Belinda Bryant, Reva God- win, Charlene Busz, Kathy Marrs, Vicki Ambrose. 7th ROW: Sharon Parker, Elaine Outcelt, John Kubacki, Paul Carlin, Keith Carlin, James Ellison, Carolyn Barnes, Janet Armstrong. The delegates will spend a week learning about various areas of our gov ' t. They will learn by acting out gov ' ts in the cities and counties. They may choose to study police administration, law, etc. They also have fun, as one of last year ' s delegates expressed. This year Diane Bruce (1.) will travel to I.U. for a week of gov ' t study and meet- ing girls from all over Indiana. Rhonda Harter (r.) will be the alternate. These girls were chosen by the Pierceton Women ' s Auxiliary of the American Legion. DAUGHTERS OF THE AMERICAN REVOLUTION GOOD CITIZENSHIP AWARD This year, Kris Carr was chosen as the DAR Good Citi zen of P.H.S. She then took a test which consisted of: current event questions; In- diana and U.S. history questions; essays on patriotism, responsibility, and leadership; and a list of high school activities. Her test score won for her the Kosciusko County DAR award. THUNDER ON SYCAMORE STREET, which was presented by the juniors and seniors this year, is a serious drama concerning intolerance. When a man who had served time in the penitentiary as a result of a traffic death moved his family to Sycamore Street, his so-called respectable neighbors decided to use violence to drive him out. Only the teenagers on the street and one man who believed in justice defied the others to stand up for the persecuted ex-convict. Completely double cast, the two presentations of the drama were well received as being both thought provoking and representative of contemporary problems of our time. 73 Senior boys at play practice.
