ROW ONE, Left to Right: Roland Espinoza, Rex Werstler, Steve Shear, Max Menzie, Bill Keener, Lewis Kreger, Jeff Rager, STANDING: Phil Menzie, Mike Kubacki, Bill Kubacki, Kim Shoemaker, Brad Schuldt, Kent Cone, Bruce Sweetheimer, Coach James Irwin. The Pierceton baseball team finished in a tie for second place in the county with a record of 5-2. The two losses came at the Lands of Larwill and County Champ Akron. ITiere were many hi-lites of our fall season Brad Schuldt pitching a perfect game against North Webster. Bruce Sweethimer hitting a two out triple against Milford in the last inning driving in the winning run. Lew Kreger won the batting trophy with an average of 390. The awarding of ribbons somehow instilled a great amount of determination in our junior high Cubs who were victorious in four out of five cross country meets . Such runners as Armando Espinoza, Dan Adkins, and Henry Espinoza were often leading the field as they crossed the finish line. A potentially strong Cubs baseball team was hampered by the loss of starting pitcher Karl Steffen who ran into sore-arm trouble. The team managed to put together some strong hitting and fine fielding, while Rick Robinson came on late in the season to pitch fine ball, enabling the junior Cubs to break even in six games . WRESTLING TEAM ROW 1: Rudy Espinoza, Roy De La Cruz, Bob Espinoza, Chuck Collier, Ron Smith, Rick Coyle. ROW 2: Stan Smith, Gary. Hostetler, Lew Collier, Denny Trump, Phil Gates, Les Kreger . ROW 3: COACH, Dave Forsberg; Dave Valentine, Jay Outcelt, Curt Gates. SECTIONAL CHAMP Capping an outstanding season for our wrestling team was Chuck Collier, partici- pating in the regional meet at Fort Wayne, as a result of his first in the sectional meet at Elkhart in February. Chuck, wrestling in the 120-lb. class, also won his first match at the regional meet in Fort Wayne, but was defeated by Baumgardner of North Manchester in his second match. This gave Chuck a record of 19 wins and only 4 losses. With a season record of 12 wins and 2 losses, Pierceton placed third in the Sec- tional out of a field of 13 teams, with Elk- hart and Jimtown ahead of us . In addition to Collier, the following wrestlers placed in the sectional meet at Elkhart: Rudy Espinoza, 2nd in the 98-lb. class; Lew Collier, 2nd in the 148-lb. class; Stan Smith, 3rd in the 136 -lb. class; Phil Gates, 3rd in the 183-lb. class; Roy DeLaCruz, 4th in the 106 -lb. class; and Gary Hostetler, 4th in the 141-lb . class . 23
