.r-S MEMORABLE MOMENTS PIERCETON HIGH SCHOOL Pierceton, Indiana 1 Jayne Tuttle Business Manager Sharon Weaver Subscription Manager FOREWORD Anita English Editor-in-Chief As we look back over our shoulders, we see many Memorable Moments of the past four years. The sudden realization that we will begin a new phase of life doesn’t erase the vivid pictures of the crowded halls of P. H. S, , the teachers at work making us better and wiser, the basketball games, or the graduation ceremony in lovely candle light. Above all these, we prize the mem- ory of YOU- -the kids, the spirit of P.H. S. Diane Miner Literary Editor Donna Hanley Asst. Photo Editor So, in our own way, we will try to bring you a tang- ible record expressing our intangible feeling at this time of departure. We, the seniors of the staff, present to you outmost Memorable Moments - - THE ECHOES OF 1964! Sincerely, Anita English Editor-in-Chief 2 Kerry Ringgenberg Sports Editor Craig Langohr Photo Editor MR. HOWARD STOUFFER DEDICATION Memorable Moments” wouldn ' t be complete without recalling the kind and familiar face of a friend — Mr. Howard Stouffer. On our pathways through the forest of time, we’ve seen the light of his smile guiding and encouraging us to keep searching for the meadow of suc- cess. Although his beam is now on others, the important thing is that it is still glowing with all the knowledge and interest that it had shown to us. The years do not wear this brilliance, nor do they dim this light. We will re- member his radiance in years to come. Thus, with grateful hearts we dedicate this the ECHOES of 1964 to Mr. Howard Stouffer. KATHY ADLER Manchester College B.S.; Vocational Home Economics; Sophomore Class DAVID A. We all remember his amazing vitality and his wit as distinguishing char- acteristics; however, we remember something else, too. Although he is probably the busiest man in town, he has never been too occupied to listen to a student ' s problems and try to help him. For his keen interest in helping us and making us better in- dividuals, we wish to thank him sincerely. We think he ' s doing a fine job as principal of P.H.S. SECRETARY Mrs. Lois Porter As the year has gone by, we at P.H.S. have come to know and love a warm, friendly person who came here only last fall -Mrs. Lois Porter, the school ' s secretary. Her cheerful smile and light disposition have made each day a little sunnier for all of us. We ' re glad she ' s here and hope she ' ll stay a long while. 6 WHITKO SCHOOL BOARD AND SUPERINTENDENT WHITKO STUDENT COUNCIL Gentlemen Prefer Blondes 3; F.F.A. 2,4-President 4; Student Manager 1, 2, 3, 4. Debbie Rager represented the seventh grade class as basketball queen attendant and was escorted by Carl Siler. Cheryl Yoder was the seventh grade cheerleader this year. Hal Wright and Rosa Moran represented the class on the Student Council. On their first semester class party, the seventh grade went roller skating at the rink in Columbia City. NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY One of the highest and most honored achievements that can be obtained by a high school student is qualifying and being accepted by the NATIONAL HONOR SO- CIETY. A student must not only qualify academically, but he must also be approved by the faculty members and have qualities of constructive leadership, purposeful services, and a worthy character. Although high scholarship is necessary, it is not enough in order to be accepted. A student is checked on whether or not he has an interest in studying and if it is self- motivated. Constructive leadership is another contributing factor. Included in this is having the ability and willingness to assume responsibility. A student ' s service also enters the qualification list. It must be decided whether or not this student considers others; if he is willing to help as well as lead; if he is loyal to superiors and to a group; and, if he is punctual. Having a worthy character is probably one of the most important qualifications and the easiest to detect because it is displayed every day. 41 F. T. A FRONT ROW; Mrs. Lenwell (Sponsor), S. The Pierceton chapter of the Future Teachers of America was very active this year. We are proud of this year ' s presi- dent, Marl ane Stump. She was state historian this past year. It was her duty to be on the Executive Council and to take pictures at state and area meetings. Kay Howell also ran for a state office for the coming year. Throughout this year, the members of our club have substituted for teachers, and several have helped to grade semester exams. This spring, our annual spring banquet was held at Horn ' s Restau- rant. After a delicious meal, the seniors of the club entertained the rest of the members with a humorous melodrama. The F. T. A. again this year gave Good Citizenship Awards to the outstanding citizens of our school. OFFICERS Front Row, Left to Right: Miss Adler, H. Phillips, L. Bowser, A. Beery, C. Gebert, P. Wolter, J. LIBRARY CLUB Any student interested in library work can be a student librarian. Any person who is a student librarian can then be a member of the Library Club. This year the Library Club has spent many enjoyable moments. Among them are: the fall and spring picnics at the flowing well, and the annual Christmas party held at Foo and Faye ' s Restaurant. The new members received th eir club pins at this Christmas party. This year the club was very busy helping set up the new elementary library. The group learned many new things about the library aspect that they had not known be- fore. All in all, it was a profitable year well-spent. 44 THESPIANS ROW 1; S. Weaver, C. Langhor, B. Gebert, M. For the first time in the history of Pierceton High School, a merger of the junior and senior play was decided. Anyone from either the junior or senior class was eligi- ble to try out for a part. The director was and will be Mrs. Boley. It was decided that each year the senior class would pay for all the expenses and receive all the pro- ceeds in return. The play was selected by a show of hands of an assembly of both classes. The selection this year was The Courtship of Eddie’s Father . It was a play centered around a family consisting of a boy and his father who lived in New York City, New York. Eddie was the boy who through the whole play tried to find a girl for his father, namely one with round eyes instead of one with skinny eyes . Among the girls pre- sented to his father by Eddie were a secretary, a nurse, a school teacher, a career girl, a beauty queen, and a sensible girl. It was the funniest and most successful play ever produced in Pierceton. We, the annual staff, congratulate all the members of the play cast and production staff for making it such a success. 47 First Row: S. Lalone, J. Collier, S. Brown, L. Stevens, M. Caudill, J. The Pierceton High School Band did very well at Instrumental Solo and Ensemble Contest at Plymouth, Indiana this year. Altogether, thirty-six firsts and thirty-nine seconds were received by the band members. One saxophone trio received a high enough score to go to State Contest at Indianapolis. They received a second there. The band marched and played at all the home basketball games this year. For the first time, the band participated in the Whitko Music Festival. All the bands of the schools in the Whitko School Corporation participated also. At the beginning of the year, the band presented a Fall Concert. Later on they presented the Winter Concert. To end the year, a Spring Festival was presented with the girls wearing multi-colored spring formals and the boys wearing dark suits. After this concert, the band members looked forward to going on to finish the year by practicing marching for the coming summer. 50 BAND ROW ONE: C. Lenwell, J. Tuttle, T. Walgamuth, J. Collier, J. B-TEAM BASKETBALL The 1963-64 season was again a very successful season for the second team Cubs. Highlights were a victory over Churubusco, which greatly outsized the Cubs, a victory over North Webster to win the B-Team Tourney held this year at Pierceton; and victories over Warsaw and highly rated Mentone. I Personal honors go to Bill Bailey, Gale Danner, Mike Miner, and Art Obregon, I all of whom played a fine season of basketball. I d 64 HIGH SCHOOL BASEBALL First Row: G. Faudree (coach), C. Rood, T. Long, G. Archer, A. Obregon, E. Christoffer. Second Row: K. Ringgenberg, G. Cone, R. Slusher, R. Reid, B. Bailey, A. Obregon, and B. Reed. This year ' s baseball team, even though suffering from last springs graduation, came through with a fine record of 7-3, losing to Webster in the county playoff. The Cubs showed the abilities that exist in all winning teams: teamwork, desire, fine coaching, experience, finese, and individual effort. Although we are losing only two members of our team, they will indeed be missed. Raymond Slusher, our snappy short stop, and Kerry Ringgenberg, our speedy center fielder, will be lost by graduation. Left to battle in next years contests, are our many fine underclassmen, including; ace pitcher. Garth Cone. All in all, it again looks like the Pierceton Cubs are going to be the team to beat. VARSITY TRACK Again this year, the Pierceton Cubs won the county track championship making it 10 championships in eleven years. Along with the county championship, the Pierceton Underclassmen Relays were won by the Cubs. With many outstanding under- classmen in track, it appears that a solid nucleus will return next year. Unfortunately, the services of Raymond Slusher and Wayne Carlin will be mis- sing next year, but their performances on the athletic field will long be remembered. 66 CROSS COUNTRY ROW ONE; M. PIERCETON WINS THIRD CONSECUTIVE CROSS-COUNTRY TITLE The Pierceton Cubs completed the 1963 cross-country season by winning their third consecutive county championship with a record-breaking low score of 25 points. Paced by Gail Danner, who won the meet with a 10-minute, 20-second time, the Cubs placed four of their seven-man team in the first six places. Gail was followed by Mike Miner, third; Doug Gregory, fourth; Garth Cone, sixth; Mike Coyle, 11; Larry Alley, 16; and Rex Reid, 18. HIGH SCHOOL VOLLEYBALL First Row; C. Fletcher, S. Hanley, B. The Seniors sat on the front row, the Juniors on the second. Sophomores on the third, etc. , etc. The cheering block yelled at all home basketball games. The cheerleaders took the cheering block to the County Basketball tourney and to the Sectional Basketball tourney. At the County basket- ball tourney, the boys from Pierceton and the different students from the Whitko school corporation sat beside the girls cheering block for the final game against Claypool, which was lost in the closing moments of the game. The B-team cheerleaders stood beside the cheering block during all home ball games to help the Varsity in leading their yells. In this manner, the whole cheering block knew the yells as we went through the game. 69 L. to R. --Becky Gebert, Jayne Tuttle, Sharon Weaver, Cinda Wright. VARSITY CHEERLEADERS L. to R. --Sharon Weaver, Cinda Wright, Becky Gebert, Jayne Tuttle. 70 The B-Team cheerleaders this year were Barb Kerr, Marsha Weaver, and Betty Yorg, all sophomores. The girls wore red sweaters over white blouses with red skirts. Sometimes the girls alternated their skirts, wearing white skirts with red insets. The Varsity cheerleaders put the B-Team in charge of the cheering block after it was organized at the beginning of this year’s basketball season. Their job consisted of lining up the rows of girls and making sure everyone had a certain spot in which to sit. This was Betty ' s first year as cheerleader, and Marsha and Barb ' s second.
