DEDICATION The 1959-60 annual staff would like to dedicate this yearbook to Walter Johnson Long. Mr, Long Is known to his many friends as “Ducky.” “Ducky has shown a sincere interest in Pierceton Hi School and its students. Mr. Long was born in Leesburg on Fdjruary 24, 1881, In 1894 the Long family moved to Pierceton, “Ducky remembers when the west side of the town burned in 1895. He recalls that Pierceton burned from where the shoe store is now to where Rood s Market is located. In 1907 Mr. Long and Miss MUUa iTKie Fry were united in marriage. “Ducky recalls several facts about P. H, S, as he remembers it. His mother and father had gone to Pierceton when there were only three years of high school. Students who wanted a fourth year had to attend the Warsaw Hfeh SchooL The school In Pierceton at that time was at the same location as it is now, but it was a two story building. The first six grades were on the lower floor, while grades seven through elevai met on the upper floor, Mr. Long Joined the United States Navy at the age of ei teen. He was sent to the Philippine Islands, where he saw action. After being in the army for two years, he joined the Indiana National Guard, where he served for twelve years in the field artillery unit. Becoming tired of tills kind of life, he decided to quit. But when World War I broke out, Mr, Long tried in vain to re-enllst. He was finally acc ted as an army photographer. Upon returning to New York, he became a captain in the Signal Corps. Today “Ducky still enjoys attending the army reunions and conversing with Ms old friends. During the summer months, Mr. and Mrs. Long reside at their cottage on Barbee Lake. With affection, the annual staff dedicates this yearbook to Walter J. Long.
