1 li II DEDICATION The 1959-60 annual staff would like to dedicate this yearbook to Walter Johnson Long. Mr, Long Is known to his many friends as “Ducky.” “Ducky has shown a sincere interest in Pierceton Hi School and its students. Mr. Long was born in Leesburg on Fdjruary 24, 1881, In 1894 the Long family moved to Pierceton, “Ducky remembers when the west side of the town burned in 1895. He recalls that Pierceton burned from where the shoe store is now to where Rood s Market is located. In 1907 Mr. Long and Miss MUUa iTKie Fry were united in marriage. “Ducky recalls several facts about P. H, S, as he remembers it. His mother and father had gone to Pierceton when there were only three years of high school. Students who wanted a fourth year had to attend the Warsaw Hfeh SchooL The school In Pierceton at that time was at the same location as it is now, but it was a two story building. The first six grades were on the lower floor, while grades seven through elevai met on the upper floor, Mr. Long Joined the United States Navy at the age of ei teen. He was sent to the Philippine Islands, where he saw action. After being in the army for two years, he joined the Indiana National Guard, where he served for twelve years in the field artillery unit. Becoming tired of tills kind of life, he decided to quit. But when World War I broke out, Mr, Long tried in vain to re-enllst. He was finally acc ted as an army photographer. Upon returning to New York, he became a captain in the Signal Corps. Today “Ducky still enjoys attending the army reunions and conversing with Ms old friends. During the summer months, Mr. and Mrs. Long reside at their cottage on Barbee Lake. With affection, the annual staff dedicates this yearbook to Walter J. Long. SENIOR PLAY SPRING CONCERT AWARD DAY SENIOR TRIP COMMENCEMENT PRINQPAL HOWARD STOUFFER The basic unit of society is the individual. A school cannot be better than the students and faculty who make up and control it. In school we try not to consider masses but individuals and while we are concerned with more and better subject matter courses and new or improved activities. Our real concern is for the education and development of the individual with his attitudes and philosophies of life as well as the develop- ment of his endowed physical and mental potentialities. I want to thank all the individuals from the President of the school board to the youngest first grader for the cooperation they have given in moulding this another school year. To the seniors, I wish success in their future undertakings; to the school board and faculty, I extend thanks; and to the undergraduates, I offer best wishes for another year. Sincerely HOWARD R. Mr. Stouffer This past year has contained many ejqperlences which the seniors of 1960 will remember. The range of activities from schoolwork, to sports and freshman initiation, will each be a fond memory to the graduating class. Soon after the beginning of school. Linden Boggs was elected class president. Bill Schaller was vice- president, Christine Sellers was secretary, and Janet Danner became treasurer, with Miss Yontz and Mr. Stouffer as sponsors. A long to be remembered activity in the fall was the traditional freshman initiation with the seniors in charge of it. Also in the fall, they presented their second class play, a comedy entitled, “Class Ring.” Also in the way of extra-curricular activities, several outstanding athletes were produced from the graduating class. During the basketball season, Christine Sellers’ reign as Basketball Queen came to a close with the crowning of the new queen. Another honor was bestowed on the class wh t Mary Lou Jones was selected by the student body to represait Plerceton at the Mermaid FestivaL A never to be forgotten memory will be the senior trip to New York and Washington D, C, As to tradition, this marks the end of twelve years of school work, and service to the school. When plans for Baccalaureate and Commencement were being made, the seniors chose silver and red to represent them, and also, they selected the red rose to be their class flower. As years pass, the graduating class of 1960 will long remember their class motto, “The first st is all the difficulty.” CALLIE LEE AKER “CaUie” Library Club 1,2,3,4, Secretary- Treasurer 3; Reporter 4. The annual hay ride was held in October this year. The group rode to Collamer Falls where they enjoyed a weiner roast. Then they saw a movie at South Whitley before returning home. For Christmas card sales, the class was divided into two teams with Becky Fletcher heading one team and Vicki Miller being the captain of the other. In January, the losing team prepared a chili supper with a dance after it for the winning team. In December, Diane Alexander was chosen as the new Basketball Queen from the following candidates; Bonnie Shepherd, Beth Coble, and Becky Fletcher. Queen Diane ' s reign began at the Mentone ballgame. The junior class sponsored a WOWO record hop in April. Also, the junior play was in April with a party for the play cast after it. That was initiation. The girls wore all different sorts of jewelry, a gunny-sack dress, one high heel, one flat, and some unusual hair styles. The boys were dressed in tight skirts, ladies hats, boots, and each boy had a nylon stocking on one leg. The official ending of initiation was the all school party held that evening. No Alligators in OUR Bath Tub 1960 is the 8th anniversary of the Student Council at Pierceton High School. It was organized by the class of 1952 largely through the efforts of Dr. Robert L. Stckbeck, the council’s first president. Drawing up a plan for a new organization is a lot like drawing up a plan for a new house. But neither the planner nor the architect can predict how future dwellers will behave in the new structure. Just as an eccentric home-owner can use the dining room for an aviary and fill the bath tub with alligators, so a free -wheelingstudent body can ignore the original plans for an organization such as the Student Council and thereby discard its effectiveness. Today, as in 1952, the Student Council, entrusted by the school administrators with legislative powers over the student body, is composed of student representatives elected annually, and, as in 1952, the purpose of the Student Council still remains to enact and enforce legislation in order to co-ordinate the student body into an efficient and unified group. Michael K. Mosher President, Student Council, 1960 LIBRARY CLUB FRONT ROW; President Brenda Arms, Sponsor Miss Yontz, Vice-President Diana Gates, Secretary- Treasurer Vicky Schaller. BACK ROW: Anita Anders, Nancy Harris, Joan Harris, Callie Akers, Janet Crouch, Rose Wiegand. Once a week the members of the P, H. L. C, meet for a Library Class. They learn how to repair books, how to process a book etc. There also is a meeting after school once a month. The meeting usually consists of a business meeting, some kind of entertainment such as films, a book report etc., and refreshments. During the year they have three special meetings. They are a fall picnic, Christmas party, and a spring picnic. The members of the P. H. L. C. keep the books and magazines in order, slip and shelve books, prepare bulletins, and learn something about the Dewey decimal system. It is being printed at Winona Lake by the Westminster Press. There it is printed by a photographic process. The way the newspaper is typed up by the editors, is the exact way it appears in print. This photographic process has given our newspaper many advantages. Among these are the ability to use cartoons and pictures. It also enables the staff to get more practical experience in the field of journalism. Ability to have it printed in color, adds en- thusiasm. The Pierceton Student has added a touch of interest for grade students also. One page is entitled The Little Student and is devoted entirely to grade news. To inspire interest, each of the first six grades has a reporter of their own. All in all, the Student Staff has tried to have features for everyone this year, hoping it was an asset to the student body. F. T.
