X FRU UUR PRINCIPHI As we approach the end of another school year our attention naturally turns to thoughts of congratulations to the seniors for having successfully completed their school experiences. We wish them happiness and all success in their future endeavors. The past year has been a memorable one. Under the leadership and fine judgement of the school board two fine additions to our building have been erected, one an elementary wing, one a shop building. The various departments of our school have been very active and have accomplished much in their fields. The music department, the athletic depart- ment, the mathematics department, the vocational departments and all various clubs and organizations have turned in some fine efforts and attained notable achievements. All this could not have been accom- plished without the cooperation of the school board, parents, community, fac- ulty and students: so may I offer my thanks to all those people who have helped to make this a successful year. The freshmen bowed to every wish and command as part of their initiation in becoming a real member of PHS. This picture shows Paul Smith having the time of his life doing a bit of slapstick com- edy-pie face style. -'I A money raising project was the event of February 3. After the Sid- ney ballgame, the seniors staged a cake walk and bingo game. The senior pictures were taken by Robert's Studio. The class voted to have a colored composite for the hall. Mother Is A Freshman was the play selected by the class. Try- outs were held shortly afterwards and after the parts were cast and the list posted, practice began the following week. Those cast for the leads were: Abigail Fortitude .... Denyse Bolt Susan, her daughter.Anita Outcelt Professor Michaels...Larry Leedy Bobo Jackson ......... Tom Kilgore Dean Gillingham..Uldis Smidchens ll One of the big moments of the year is the challenge seniors issue to the underclassmen for a ballgama This year was no exception. March ll the seniors narrowly missed win- ning this game by a margin of two points. The girls didn't have quite that much luck in their volleyball game with the underclassmen girls. Win or lose, what could be more fun than the senior-underclassmen game? All the seniors, with their par- ents, relatives, and friends anx- iously awaited the train at the War saw depot, May 13. This was the be ginning of the Boersma tour, which the class selected. Highlighting the trip were the White House, National Art Gallery, Lincoln Memorial, Washington's Mon- ument, Empire State Building, a night club, The Village Barn, Times Square, Statue of Liberty, subway rides, boat tour of Manhattan ls- land,United Nations Building, Radio City Music Hall, and the train ride home. Truly the senior trip will be an experience long remembered by all the seniors. ' All ti Baccalaureate service was con- ducted May 20 at the' Methodist Church. The invocation was given by Rev. McClarnon. The senior sextette sang HInvooationH. The high school choir sang uLord,To Thee Our Hearts Are Raisedu. The address was given by The Rev. H.V. Meima. The high school choir then sang nGreat Is The Lordu, after which the mixed quartette from the senior class sang HDear Lord And Father Of Man- kindu. Rev. John Snyder pronounced the benediction. Commencement exercises were held Thursday,May 2h at the high school. The audience remained standing for the senior processional and the in- vocation given by Jim Watters. The theme of the program was based on the preamble to the constitution. The top ten, scholastically, gave the speeches for the Living Consti- tution. Recognitions and awards were made by Mr. Stouffer. Miss Yontz, the class sponsor presented the classas candidates for graduation. Diplomas were then awarded the thirty-eight seniors. The seniors fulfilled a tradition by singing the HHalls of Ivyn. The benediction, HThe Lords Pray- eru was sung by the senior chorus. With the closing of the curtains, the juniors lighted their candles and proceeded to form on each side of the aisle. One by one, the graduates with diploma in one hand, and candle in the other, walked down the aisle. In appearance, they are gold plated, featuring a concave top with a crest sporting the letter P mounted on a diagonal gold stripe in the concave insert. The class numer- als, 19S7, are mounted on a black background along the ring's side. In connection with the election of officers, Rex Rhinehart and Judy Stouffer were selected as student council representatives. Mr. Mowrey assumed his post as sponsor. The Junior sales room is the main source of income for the juniors. Here the juniors' fund grows to pro- vide for a senior class trip. All juniors participated in this project selling refreshments at the basket- ball games, lunch hours, and other school activities. The juniors experienced their hayride, Friday, September 30. Hay- filled wagons carried them to Col- lamer Dam for an evening of recrea- tion and sack lunches. Before re- turning home, they attended a movie in South Whitley. The Christmas card campaign, an annual junior project, headed by team captains, Kenny Fawley, and Phil Mc Farren, was launched early in Novem- ber. The sales total was high and gave the junior treasury a consider- able boost. Queen Julia Ratliff reigned tri- umphantly as basketball queen of the l9S6-57 basketball season in the colorful half-time spectacle at the December l9th game with Mentone. uDon't Take My Pennyn was the comedy chosen by the class as their first play, which was directed by Mrs. Arlene Jackson. Nine girls and eight boys were featured in the cast for the presentation of the play on April 12th and 13th. 9 x ' f S -f-fin? ? l i Nr-:1-f' W. I-lITES October l9 was the fatal day for the freshmen. During the course of this day and evening the freshmen were initiated by the seniors. That night was the all-school party at which the boys were required to walk through ice and the girls jel- lo. The senior boys delighted them- selves by smearing the faces of the freshmen boys with pie. On the fol- lowing day, the boys had to wear their shirts backward and the girls wore their blouses backward and their hair pinned up to school. Thus were the freshmen dully initi- ated. The freshmen this year held two class parties, one on October 7 and the other on Nay 2. At both of these, games and refreshments were enjoyed by all. This year for their basketball queen attendant, the freshmen chose Bobbie Jo Leifer to represent them at the annual crowning of the bas- ketball queen. The Cubs also placed third in the Converse Relays for the second year in a row, and the big highlight of the season for the Cubs was when they scored 81 1X2 points to take the County Meet for the second year in a row. The nearest team was Syracuse with 32 points. Pierceton started out with a win in the first meet but then they were de- feated by Huntington in the second outing. The Cubs shook off that defeat and went on to victory in every meet until the Warsaw meet. In this meet the Cubs were minus their ace dash man and broad jumper, Jim Stouffer. Some very outstanding individual records were recorded during the 1955 season. Farris had a leap of S ft. 9 3fh in. in high jump, A. Gebert had a put in shot of better than M3 ft.3 J. Stouffer was timed in the 220 at 22.9 Cthis time was recorded in his first heat race of sectiona1D. In the County Meet, Pierceton scored in every event and had two double win- ners. Tim Derf was the Hiron Mann as he won both the mile and half mele. Stouf- fer won both the lOO and 220 yard dashes, and also placed second in the broad jump. ...JR-HI TRHCKJ Pierceton M9 Sidney BLL Pierceton 75 lf2 Sidney 31 lf2 North Webster lil Pierceton 71 2X3 Syracuse l8 lf3 Colnty Neet fierceton Silver Lake Etna Green GF' N, In the l955 track season you couldn't overlook the Pierceton Jr. High Thinlies as they recaptured the County Jr. High Track title. The Pierceton Cubs took the County Baseball Title. The Cubs were in duafinal game two years straight and were defeated both times. Then this year things were changedg the team which compiled the best record after playing every team in the county was declared the County Champs. The Cubs showed no mercy and defeated every team they played, while the closest team to them lost two games-one of which was to the Cubs. Nr. Rothgeb, Pierceton's coach, before the season began said he had one goal in mind and that was winning the baseball title. Scoring almost l00 runs in the eleven ballgames showed that the team meant business. It was the last game for seven seniors when they played North Webster and defeated them 7 to 0. But things didn't look very bright after losing three out of the first six games. However, then the Cubs caught hold and went on to have one of the best seasons in a long time here at Pierce- ton. The saying goes that good things come in threes. that has happened this starting just after Well, year, Christmas with winning a four- way tourney at Manchester. The second thing was winning the county tourney in January, the first since l9hh. The final thing was winning twenty games for the first time in many years. Derf, Estil Kissinger, Arden Leiter, Jim, Tenney, Jack Horn, Rex Mort Warsaw ended Pierceton's season in the sectional by a score of 6l-55. It was the second time that Warsaw had beaten the Cubs, the first time being just before Christ- mas. The Narsaw defeat ended a l7 game winning streak for Pierceton. The success of the team came with a lot of hard work and good team work by every one. Nobody was a standout as far as being high point man every time, as just about everyone figured in that de- partment. At the end of the season Jim Matters was elected honor- ary captain by the entire tourney squad, thus ending a Very successful season. 1 - I 1, ff .- 244 i E553 5 Arden Leiter Sophomore 5 ft. lhg , Height S-10 1 I 1 1 I 1' A x, 1 x 40 1 fi EW Estil Kissinger 1 Junior . It was one of the most suc- cessful seasons ever enjoyed by a Pier- ceton track team. Besides winning the county title, they also won the sec- tional, a feat never before accomplished by the Cubs. They placed second in the Converse Relays. The Cubs might have taken the relays if a baton would not have been dropped in one of the races. This track meet was the only meet the Cubs lost besides the regional, where they failed to place. Several school records were broken this year, including both relays. Derf broke the half mile record in the sec- tional meet with a time of 2:OE.7. Dick Slusher broke the shot ut record with a heave of hh ft. 5 lf? in. The mile relay team composed of Arms, Rhinehart, J. Slusher, and Derf set a school record with a time of 3:hh.l. The half mile relay team also set a record with a time of l:37.h5, this team being composed of D. Slusher, Watters, R. Slusher, and Gebert. Gebert had two times under the school record in the 100 yd. dash, but both times a wind was at his back or side. Derf and Gebert had a lot to do with winning both the county and sectional titles. In the county, Derf was a double winner, taking both the mile and half mile, while Gebert took the broad jump, and both dashes. In the sectional, Derf won the half mile in record break- ing time and Gebert won the lOO, tying the sectional record in this event. These were the only individual events Pierceton qualified in for the regional meet. The track team for next season will be greatly affected by the loss of eight seniors, but even so PHS will be looking toward its fourth consecutive champion- ship. It is the representation of the upper six grades to solve stu- dent body problems and is a channel to the faculty in expressing the desires and opinions of the stu- dents. The student council met Septem- ber lS, and set up plans for the all-school party held October l9, featuring the freshman initiation. An amendment was added to the constitution concerning the all- school party. It states that the first all-school party of the year will always be held on the third Wednesday in October from 7 to 9 in the gym. The student council also sets up the standards for the election of the cheerleaders and of the basket- ball queen. March 16, the student council solved the problem of distributing an approximate 3300 fund to some school activity or group. Nine pro- jects were presented before the en- tire student body in the form of a ballot to obtain the sentiments of the students. The Playground Fund and the Athletic Department, com- bined, received S70 with which a protable basketball goal was pur- chased.
