Hanover College Manchester College, A,B, Indiana University, M,S, Plane Geometry Cl mcldfia. f9wtP1z,ifn cipae To operate smoothly in a manner pleasing to all, a school needs a strong esprit de corps --a sense of union, Common interests, and responsibilities. Every student and faculty member should feel that his position is'important and should realize that the moment he neglects his pos- ition then other students and other faculty members are concerned. All the parts of a school are necessary and every department, club, and activity has an important place. I personally appreciate the excellent cooperation I have reciev- ed from our school board, our fine faculty group, and from the members of the student body. It is my fondest hope that Pierceton will con- tinue to grow in loyalty, cooperation, and educational opportunities. ,MM K K . ,E.QQf . W E Q il N 4. 5: f i X ,N . Xm. NNW f wif: ,QRS . ,,.. On August l,1955,we will be celebrating the third birthday of the Monroe-washington School Corporation. We have gone a long way since 1952 in cementing this school unit into a working partnership, which has proved very advantageous to both townships. The members of our first board were President, Richard Pletcherg Secretary, Clifford Sellers, Treasurer, James 0. Tuttle. Colonel L. Likens and Maynard Spann made up the balance of the school board. Since 1952, the personnel of the school board has changed from time to time, but we have always been fortunate to have the same high type people directing the affairs of the Corporation. The work of this board has been very unselfish in dealing with the problems of the schools, and at no time has partisan feeling entered into their de- cislons. we are confidently looking forward to one of the finest school systems in the county and with the earnest cooperation of all con- cerned, that aim is assured. Willa fx 5 . This year the seniors chose the motto nToday Decides Tomorrown and robin-egg blue and silver as class colors. A red rose was se- lected Bl class flower. The annual uSkip Dayn was a trip to Pokagon State Park. To- boganning, sleding, table tennis, and pool were enjoyed by every- one. The class of 'SS sponsored a combined bingo party and cake- walk as a money raising plan. One gross of fire-extinguishers was also sold by the class. Their last fund making scheme was a turkey raffle held during the Pierceton-Akron basket ball game. The profits from these projects went toward the Boersma Train Trip to New York City and washington D.C. A visit to Capitol Hill to see the House and Senate Rooms and to watch Congress in session is planned. Mt. Vernon and the Tomb of the Unknown Soldiers will be seen while in Washington D.C. A boat ride around New York and a sightseeing bus tour is scheduled to give the seniors a prospective view of the city life. The class is also planning to view the inside of a big ocean liner. Two n ghtclubs are on the list of interests for the seniors-one in Washington and one in New York. Miss Yontz and Mr. Mowrey arc to accompany the group on the journey. We started the year off with a big bang by having a hayride on September 17 fResults -- week later one member of the class landed in the hospital -- blame it on the foodll A few days later our class rings arrived and after the usual swapping, we went on to continue the year shining our prlzed possessions. Next we tackled card sales with Sue Henderson's team defeating Paul Smith's. The usual payoff, a chili supper was held. Then of course the basketball season started and crowd selling began. Clf we were once shy, we aren't anymore!! It is the privilege of the Junior class to choose three candidates for basketball queen. This year the class chose Rosalie Hartman, Marilyn Slaymaker, and Pat Walsh. Rosalie was selected by the student body as our queen for IQSM-1955. In order to add a little more to our treasury, cookies were sold twice during the year. We Juniors all agree that this year has gone very fast Seriously, most of us are looking forward to our sen- ior year, maybe with a little doubt, but if it com- pares with this year in any way, it will have a hap py ending. We the future seniors of Hifi have been toiling diligently to obtain some of that green stuff called money. We added to our treasury, a sum of Hh77.93 which had been collected from selling magazines. Judy Stouffer and Bill O'Dell were the lucky classmates receiving the sales- manship watches, as their token for superior salesmanship. T A magazine and class party have highlighted our joyous year which practically never had a dull moment! After ordering our sparkly classrings we consider ourselves g prepared for the Junior year N ahead of us. That evening at the allsohool party there were tall tales of a trip to an island told by the girlsg the boys made a marriage proposal to some unknown girl. The boys were blind-folded and made to believe that they would jump into a tub of watery but instead, handfuls of water were thrown on them as they made big jumps After fulfilling all se and other ridgculous tasks, y were made full-fledge Pierce High School students. The Cubs went all the way through the reg- ular season without losing a game. In the County tournament the were beaten by the Mil- ford ballclub after li grueling innings of base ball. These lh innings were played at three different times, however. The two teams met at the Syracuse diamond with a cloudy sky threatening to burst at al- most any second. The Cubs took a 3-run lead early in the opening innings, but could not get in the required S innings before the rain be- gan to fall. The two teams met again to start a brand new ballgame. Again they were rained out with neither team scoring. The third time they met, the Milford team 8ot the first run, the only run they got during the entire campaign, but also the only run they needed to beat Pierceton and capture the county championship. The Cubs look forward to a fine season again next year, and are going to try to bring the baseball championship to Pierceton and a fine coach, Dick nltchyn Bothgeb. ww .iv iff, ..,Y K E E .... , pzzf, ,Q - 1.23. if I'-:lf-?L Yi Q 'Q aff Q 'X ig 1? , My .:x, W X , Q N X 8 Sax . In the fall, we attended band days at both Manchest- er College and Purdue University. The Halleck Day Parade, Mermaid Festival, Warsaw Centennial, and our Haloween parade were some of the parades where Pierceton passed in review. We won fifty dollars in prize money for parade marching. A new bass horn and a baritone were pruchased by the band. Tech- nic classes were something on the nnew' list this year, too. Each individual group practiced cne'hour a week besides regular rehearsal time. Ensembles such as clarinet trios, the woodwind quartet, trumpet trios, saxaphone quartet, a drum ensemble, a trombone duet , and a baritone duet grow out of these technic classes. These en- sembles all participated in the District Music Contest at Fort Wayne Our winter band concert was presented December 8. The program was highlighted by Sousa Marches, Christmas selections. and an arrange ment of nPorgy and Bessn by George Gershwin. The spring concert H111 be held May 6. The girls do many things to give the students a wealth of information. Processing the new books for both Monroe and Pierceton is one of the duties of the club. This process consists of breaking the books, inserting cards and date slips, marking backs, and filing them in their respectiveplaces. Another duty is to make bulletin board displays each month. Along with these tasks, each girl is assigned certain duties for one week. On Wednesdays, the club meets as a class during school hours. Aside from all their work, the club finds time for fun. Three parties were held, a picnic at the Flowing Well and a ride on the dixie, another picnic at Ducky L0ng's cottage, and the high light, a dinner party at Miss Yontz'shome. The school can be proud to know that all of these girls are members of the High School Librarian's Association. fm Seated - Marva Knoop, Mr. Meitzler, Barbara Bowman, Miss Bryant Standing - Bob Snyder, Pearl Widman, Jim warner, Judy Stouffer, Dave Walsh, Carol Snyder, Sue Henderson, Pat Walsh, Dorothy Steffen, Uldis Smidchens, Phil McFarren, Larry Cole The Future Teachers under the direction of Miss Bryant and Mr. Meitzler have completed an interesting year of being ntea- cher's little helpers .
