I IQENET- FIIREWURII ln The pages oT This book, we oT The l94I annual sTaTT have Tried To show, along wiTh currenT acTiviTies, some oT our earlier hisTory and TradiTions. For TwenTy years The hisTory oT PiedmonT High School has unToldedq during This Time growTh and developmenT in all Things, physical, menTal, and spiriTual, have been The goal oT The Highlanders. We have come now To a place where iT may be well To Turn and look aT The road over which our predecessors Traveled. ln The sTory oT our school There are Tive daTes oT signal imporTance: l92l-Founding oT The Senior High School i922-ConsTrucTion oT The Senior High Building l924-Con T i ' i s rucTlon OT The Junior High Building I935-AddiTion oT Quad and Rally CourT I938-AddiTion oT The New Library When Tounded, PiedmonT High School was composed of many groups Trom diTTerenT schools. The TirsT Tew years were Times oT real sTruggleg molding The various TacTions inTo a uniTed' sTudenT body was no simple Task. True pioneers were our superinTendenT, Mr. Jones, and The members oT The early TaculTy and school board. They were TighTing on a real TronTier. IT was Their vision and hard work ThaT made success possible. IT is This same inTeresT on The parT oT our adminisTraTors ThaT Today seTs our high sTandards and helps us To achieve our ideals. Housed in an abandoned casino and in oTher nondescripT buildings, The TalTering young school looked Toward a seemingly doubTTul TuTure. Could such an inTanT organizaTion hope ever To win a place among sTrong and well-esTab- lished compeTiTors? YeT, looking abouT us, we see ThaT we now have won a place oT disTincT' among The schools oT This area. ion Showing The energy and deTerminaTion ThaT have since become characTerisTic oT The Clan, The sTudenT body began governmenTal organizaTion. A presidenT and a board OT conTrol were chosen, and a consTiTuTion was draTTed. The heraldry oT The school was originaTed3 our ScoTch Theme, our colors oT purple and whiTe, our moTTo, Achieve The Honorable, our school shield--all were some oT The decisions oT The Time. BuT These were noT The only greaT sTeps Taken aT The Time. Clubs, publicaTions, and oTher acTi- viTies were insTiTuTed. The Highlander weekly was organized: volume one oT The new annual replaced The mimeographed copy oT The previous year. lnTra-mural T'T s ri e was narrowly averTed in The dis- The ArT TenT a parT oT Piedmor-iT High School in I92l cussion as To wheTher To name The book The Clan-O-Log or The Purple HeaTher. PiedmonT was on The move. One oT The mosT imporTanT evenTs in our hisTory as a school was The enlarging oT our aThleTic TaciliTies in l928, Through a bond elecTion. Prior To ThaT Time Trackmen journeyed To The Cal oval Tor daily pracTice, and TooTball players compeTed on an alTernaTely muddy and rock-like Tield oT clay. Among The greaTesT daTes in our hisTory was The day when The .new Track, gridiron, Tield house, and grand-sTand were compleTed and made available Tor The sTudenTs oT PiedmonT. lmporTanT in our plan of presenTaTion This year are The shields, ThisTles, and oTher arT work which have been prepared by our skilled and ingenious arT deparTmenT. Each oT The engravings on The division pages oT This book represenTs a chaoTer in school liTe, one of The salienT daTes in school hisTory, and one oT The Tive shields which are ouTsTanding aT Piedmont Here and There, adding inTeresT and hisToric aTmosphere, are a Tew scenes Trom The pasT, LeT These phoTographs by Their presence emphasize The conTrasT beTween The school life of yesTerday and Today. Compare The science shack shown on This page wiTh The modern laboraTories oT our school aT The presenT Time. However much we may wish To review The pasT, our primary inTeresT is in This year's hap- penings. ln presenTing This record, we have also Tollowed whaT we believe To be The wishes oT The sTudenTs in ThaT we have increased The proporTional area occupied by phoTographs. As maTerial Tor These picTures we have chosen Tewer snaps, buT snaps oT beTTer phoTographic qualiTy and subiecT maTTer, and have reproduced Them in no-squinT sizes. Turn now To The senior pages and see The inTormal sidelighTs on The graduaTes ThaT are beside The individual porTraiTs. The reader will also noTice ThaT The views are larger and clearer Than ever before. lv1enTioned in This arTicle are only a Tew oT The TeaTures oT which we are sure ThaT The sTudenTs will hearTily approve. ln reviewing The pasT and recording The presenT, leT us also look ahead To whaT The nexr TwenTy years may bring. We can see a dynamic, persevering Piedmont always sTriving To Achieve The Honorable. We can easily visualize an insTiTuTion, ever increasing in greaTness and building iTselT on The TradiTions oT The pasT and The achievemenTs oT Today.-Joe Woods, EdiTor.
