Class History In September, 1942, the Space Ship landed at Planet No. 1 Grade School on the Piedmont Grade School Air Field and out jumped the beginnings of what terminated in 1950, the Space Cadet Freshmen. They started with a teacher new to the solar system, Mrs. Helen Mullikin, who taught only for six months due to illness and we finished with substitutes. In the second grade again we had a teacher new to the solar system, Mrs. St. Clair. The third grade brought us a teacher with only two years in this system, Miss Ollie Kiser. As we entered the fourth grade, we had a brand new experience, a teacher who had been here for a long time, Mrs. Vanita Hixson. The fifth grade again brings us a teacher new to the solar system, Miss Norma Holt. In the sixth grade we try out a host of new teachers. Our own home room teacher, Mrs. Elaine English, the new Superintendent, Mr. D. D. McKenzie, the initiation of Mr. J. M. English and the music department in our school, the first Senior trip was also made at the end of this year. In the seventh grade we faced another unusual experience; a teacher familiar to the solar system, Mrs. Amy Holmes- In the eighth grade our familiar teachers were: Mr. Henry White, Mrs. Amy Holmes, and a substitute, Mrs. Jessie Pickens. This was the first feeble attempt at departmental work which is now commonly used in the upper grades. Our class holds the distinction of initiating new teachers to the Public Grade Solar System, the exceptions were: Mrs. Vanita Hixson, Mrs. Amy Holmes, Mr. Henry White. To the nucleus of our local planet, “Grade School , other ninth graders came to form the “Freshman planet in 1950-1951. Our Space Pilots that year were: Mr. J. P. Jones and Miss Biard Alexander, who was also our new art teacher. With the coming of our class to high school, the subjects of art and orchestra were incorporated into our curriculum. The new teacher was our co-sponsor. Our commanding officers were: President: Winferd Mabury Secretary-Treasurer: Myra Waites Vice-President: Wanda Darden Reporter: Kay Carpenter During the Freshman year we lost Space Cadet Class Members as follows: Wilma Street, Maxine Waller, Charles Trout, Jim Foster, Jim Keith, Eula Clark, Ronald Bennett, Edgar Ellington, Edward Sheets, Loretta Fears, Joyce Cates. We traveled after three months of liberty to the strange, new, planet “Sophomore . Again we initiate a new teacher, Miss Grace Bollinger, the home economics teacher. Of course, we let her practice on us on being Space Co-Sponsor. Our other co-pilot was Mr. D. D. McKenzie. Our commanding officers were: President: Norma Johnson Secretary-Treasurer: Wanda Darden Vice-President: W inferd Mabury Reporter: Stanley Mann This year we gained no new Space Cadets, but lost Jim Evans, Donald Hensley, Billy Moss, and Betty Darden. Our next destination was the “Junior planet. We landed with our same co-pilots as before, Mr. D. D. McKenzie and Miss Grace Bollinger, and with commanding officers as follows: President: Norma Johnson Secretary-Treasurer: Myra Waites Vice-President: Wanda Darden Reporter: Gene Allen This was an unusual year, no new teacher for us. We gave our first play during this year with a borrowed sponsor and director of play. Our play was “A Date With Judy . Fellow Space Cadets, Betty Smith, Bob Wymore, Yvonne Wymore dropped out. As usual we gained none. Bingo! It happened again. As we arrived at our last destination “Senior planet, guess what? You guessed it! Two new teachers! Not one but two, and one of them again our co- sponsor, Miss Joan Dasovich, the home economics teacher. The other, Coach Louis Chaney, the athletic coach and physical education director. What s new? Basketball, of course, for girls! We gave our second play during this year, “Daffy Dills , which was a great success. We experienced a very nice trip to Florida. We lost two Space Cadets, Fern and Madeline Kinnamore. A very unusual thing happened! We gained a new cadet, the first in four years, Jack Auten. Our co-pilots were Mr. D. D. McKenzie and Miss Joan Dasovich. Our commanding officers for the year were: President: Stanley Mann Secretary: Myra Waites Vice-President: Cletis Ellinghouse Treasurer: Betty Gronseth 11
