Class History One bright September morning in the fall of 1949, a large group of refugees from grade school timidly entered the halls of higher education known as high school. As we had very little understanding of the events that were taking place around us, it was decided we needed someone a little older and wiser to lead us the right way. Mr. Jones and Mr. McKenzie gra- ciously took over this overwhelming task. They began making us feel that we belonged by letting us organize our class and elect class officers. We felt very privileged to be given so much responsibility and elected as our officers: Ruth Weddle, President; John Westbrook, Vice-President; Carol Lee Richardson, Secretary and Treasurer. It was remarkable what we accomplished in a period of nine months. In fact, it was so remarkable that our superiors felt we should be rewarded by having a three-month vacation. Our superiors felt they should reward us further by moving us a step higher on the ladder of education and gave us the title of Sophomores. Needless to say, we were proud of this and were eager to come back at the end of our vacation so we could live up to all this honor they had bestowed upon us. At last our vacation was ended and we came back to high school with a lot more con- fidence than the year before. We were saddened by the fact that a few of our group had felt that they were unable to continue with us on our journey through the halls of education. Those of us that were left happily plunged into our new studies and ideas with unsurpassed eagerness. Mr. Holmes and Mr. Gibbs took over as superiors of our class this year and remained with us throughout our remaining years. Under their capable leadership we progressed greatly during our stay. Our officers for this year were: John Westbrook, President; Leon Hillis, Vice-President; Icle Lutes, Secretary and Treasurer. At the end of nine months, we had again accomplished enough to be awarded with another three-month vacation and a new title of Juniors. We were especially proud of the latter since it meant we were to be known as upperclassmen. We felt very distinguished as we came back in September to begin our third year in the high school. We were determined to better ourselves and to contribute something to our fellow classmates. As our officers this year we chose: John Westbrook, President; Icle Lutes, Vice-President; Carol Richardson, Secretary and Treasurer. We began to discuss the trip we hoped to make when we must depart from the school next year. As we were becoming more and more accomplished it was decided we were to give a play. We chose “Here Comes Charlie” which was accepted with great enthusiasm by a large audience. As the nine months neared a close, we began to realize that after our usual three-month vacation we would be coming back to our school for the last year and would bear the impressive title of Seniors. When September rolled around, we came through the doors of the school proudly, Seniors of 1953. We bore little resemblance to the poorly equipped group we had been four years before- We hated to leave the school and our friends but we realized we must make room for others to enter so that they might benefit the way we had. As our officers for our final year we elected: Icle Lutes, President; Glenda Ellinghouse, Vice-President; Carol Richardson, Secretary and Treasurer. At the end of nine months, a function known as Commencement was held to officially announce that we had progressed greatly and where now eligible of leaving the school after four years. To show further how we had advanced, we put on our commencement program ourselves with the help of our sponsors. After commencement, our long-awaited dream of our trip to Southern lands became true» 9
