Dedicated to Dr. Mary L. Griggs Dr. Mary Lillie Griggs, retired Professor of Mathematics, Piedmont College passed away this past Sept. 12 after 35 years of service to education. Dr. Griggs was born August 29, 1913 to the late Joseph H. Griggs and Lillie Kimmy Griggs who moved to Demorest when Dr. Griggs was six years old. She attended elementary and high school in Demorest before graduating from Piedmont College. A.B. Magna cum Laude 1932. In 1933 she earned her Master ' s degree and in 1971 the Ed.S. degree in Mathematics at the University of Georgia. In 1972, Piedmont College awarded her the Honorary D egree of Doctor of Education. During her twenty years as Chairman of Mathematics at Piedmont College, she was one of the most beloved of teachers. She was also a strong force on the faculty, serving on many important committees of the College. These included the Academic Affairs Committee, Self Study Financial Resource Committee, Self Study Steering Committee, and the Faculty Social Committee. Extra academic responsibilities were advisor for the Gamma Chi Society, the Torch Club and the National Honorary Scholarship Society, Alpha Chi. Professionally, Dr. Griggs was a member of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics, the Mathematical Association of America, the Georgia Council of Teachers of Mathematics, the Alpha Gamma Chapter of the Delta Kappa Gamma Society, in which she held various offices, and Phi Kappa Phi. For those of us who knew Dr. Griggs she will be sorely missed and always have a place in our hearts. - , ' A
