To the Members of the Class of 1983 by D. Garen Simmons President of Piedmont College Congratulations to the class of 1983. As the eighty-sixth class to graduate from Piedmont College since 1897, you are unique. We most frequently think of the traditional students among you, those who graduated in the high school class of 1979 and entered college in September of that year. Your class, however, is not a homogenous group in that it contains a number of older students. Some are completing interrupted educational careers; many are women with families and other responsibilities; some are changing careers; some are obtaining an additional degree; some joined your class to satisfy intellectual curiosity and others for the pure pleasure of learning. This diversity makes your class both unique and strong. The rapidly changing conditions of the 1980 ' s added to the uniqueness of your class for these years spanned the most serious economic recession in the second half of the twentieth century. In some ways, that recession was not as severe as that of the 1930 ' s; while in other ways, it was worse. It certainly was different. Although personal and family hardships were not always apparent, they were real, and they influenced those earning a college education. It often has been said that hard times make hard people. I would hope that you, the members of the class of 1983, are intensly motivated, self-relient and resilient. But I trust that hard times have not made you insensitive to the needs of others. I have faith that you will follow the Piedmont tradition of assisting others as many of you have been assisted along the way. You are intelligent, diligent, ethicly and spiritually strong, compassionate, and a credit to your families, your communities, and your nations. While making a living and full rewarding life for yourself, I am confident that you will continue to show Christian compassion and, in the years ahead, know the joy of helping others. That joy was expressed very appropriately by one of your contemporaries with the following simple but profound truth: When you row another fellow across the stream, you get there yourself.
