THE HIGH HILLS CATCH THE SUNLIGHT FIRST Inspire us, O Lord, to rise and face a new mountain on which we can see the sunrise ... For we know that for every valley there is a mountain peak; for every sunset there is a sunrise; and for every problem there is an opportunity to climb higher that we ' ve ever dared. f f Jp a ' Coven by Ms. Dianne Mize THE 1979 YONAHIAN IS: In DEDICATION to Coach O ' Neal Cave for his 31 years at Piedmont, and his ever present smile. In APPRECIATION of Dr. and Mrs. James E. Walter for their support and encouragement to each of us at Piedmont. as -m fj In MEMORY of Mrs. Edith Scott for her love and understanding. Everyone gained from her knowledge of health and art. Her memory will remain dear to us forever. THE PRESIDENT ' S LETTER By James E. Walter In traveling recently among our friends in the churches of Florida and California, I have been asked if hazing is permitted at Piedmont College. My reply is an unequivical NO. In 1949, I decided to end this practice of treating freshmen and pledges to fraternities and sororities as inferiors for a season, and then embracing them later as brothers and sisters beloved and equal. These inquiries of friends flow from the national radio and television campaign that has been launched to end all physical and mental hazing on college and university properties. The mother who lost a 19-year-old son in a fraternity initiation at an university of 1500 students in New York has called this problem to the attention of our nation. She discovered that her son was not the only college student in America who lost his life as a result of the ancient and honorable methods of making men out of boys, and real women out of little girls. The incident in 1949 that triggered my own thinking and action on this subject was the dropping of a Piedmont freshman in the mountain woods twenty miles from campus with only shorts and shoes. By morning he had a deep cold that cost him several days of college that week and a deep psychological scar that cost him a college degree. I got to wondering how the rattlesnakes in that wooded area might have reacted in natural defense to the midnight invaders of their domain. Rather than wait further for tragedy, I determined that physical and mental hazing were not appropriate, intelligent, or moral pleasures for students or faculty in a church-related college. Thus we substituted Field Day athletic contests of a sportsmanship character for these degrading and dangerous peer pressures of hazing. This year, under the direction of the Student Government Association, two Field Days were held, one in the fall and one in the spring. The Sophomore and Senior classes were victorious by a narrow margin in the fall, but the Freshman and Junior classes made it even by having the higher score in the spring. Some of the favorite events of competition were the Softball games, baseball throw for accuracy, three-legged races and dodge ball. I feel a special debt of gratitude to the officers of the student Government Association. I am understandably proud of Martha Kelly, President; Wendy Hawks, Vice President; Stacy Gordon, Secretary-Treasurer; Brenda Cates, Senior Representative; Tim Cagle, Junior Representative; Jon Cantrell, Sophomore Representative; and Mitch Beckman, Freshman Representative. I believe that our NO Hazing policy at Piedmont College is a practical reflection of our belief in the Biblical teaching that the body is a temple of God. I think it is more reflective of our belief in the brotherhood of man and the Fatherhood of God to have Literary Society members march together - freshmen, pledges, and officers - all 85 miles to Atlanta to gather gifts for the cancer fund. Doing something constructive on an equal basis appeals to me as being much more mature than inflicting demeaning tasks on the initiates, for the pleasure or self-aggrandizement of commanding officers of upperclassmen or a fraternal society. Likewise our policies of free tutoring for all who need and request academic assistance reflect our genuine concern for the welfare of every individual. The Bible stories of the lost coin, the lost sheep, and the prodigal son all provide inspiration for finding practical and significant ways of supporting our best efforts to help young people to be their best selves to know the truth, the truth shall make you free , under God. r M Wr CLIMB EVERY MOUNTAIN Climb Every mountain Ford every stream Follow every by-way Till you find your dream. An entertainer in the classic sense of the word, Mr. Pengelly has appeared frequently at such prestigious locations as the Hyatt Hotels in Charleston, South Carolina and New York. His record of performances at Piedmont College attests his popularity with the college set. He has appeared at almost every college and university on the Eastern Coast from Cornell to the University of Georgia. On October 31st and November 1st, Piedmont College was privileged to have Mr. Robert Pereda, Organist and Music Director, The Community Church, Vero Beach, Florida, in concert in the Piedmont College Chapel. The evening program, on Halloween, was enlivened by a springly rendering of Pixie Patrol by the late Fred Febbel composed for his daughter ' s seventh birthday. Other numbers ranged from Bach to Boellmann ' s SUITE GOTHIQUE and included for an appreciative audience Mr. Pereda ' s own piece, BERCEUSE. 60 On January 24th Dr. Lamont Okey presented a one-hour program on humor. In his talk Dr. Okey told us why we laugh, how best to enjoy laughter, and how to appreciate it. Dr. Okey is the former Chairman of the Interpretation Area of the Department of Speech at the University of Michigan from which he retired in 1978. He presented several courses in speech and drama at Piedmont winter quarter. Dr. Okey has to return to Michigan after winter quarter but we hope to have him back on our campus in the future. On one cold, snowy night in January all the Dorm students gathered together in the student activity center to listen to the music of Andy Wahlberg. He is, by any standards, one of a kind performer. From his 6 ' 7 size 83 year old harp guitar he plays, Andy is an original. But that which is most unusual not immediately obvious. On stage, he is a high energy showman. With an emotionally powerful bass voice and unique acoustic guitar style, he is a sensitive soloist who truly captures the imagination of his listeners. Several times during his performance he went dancing through the audience. He was a delight and we hope to bring him back to our college the next time we all get together to enjoy the winter nights. 61 ■ijU fit w • K r i It Each fall quarter everyone in the dorm votes for a Dorm council. This modern brick building served as a dormitory for women students. It also houses the College dispensary and infirmary, as well as special rooms for College functions, cocurricular activities, and social gatherings. Getman-Babcock Hall is named in honor of its principal donors: the late Dr. and Mrs. Arthur K. Getman, educators of Albany, New York, and the late Cora Anna Babcock of Cooperstown, New York, sister of Mrs. Getman. The hall provides dormitory living for 135 women, 3 faculty apartments, and 2 guest rooms. The girls living in the dorm are a very close knit family. They fight, love, laugh, cry, and share together. They will remember each other the rest of their lives. This year they had a Christmas party at Christmas, going away parties for the seniors, and a farewell party for all the girls. 67 Organizations L to R: Tim Cagle-Junior Rep., Brenda Cates-Senior Rep., Stacy Gordon-Secretary Treasurer, John Cantrell-Sophomore Rep., Wendy Hawks-Vice President, Mitch Beckman-Freshman Rep., Sitting: Martha Kelly-President S.G.A. Membership is limited to no more than 10 percent of the junior and senior classes of any member campus. Symbolizing the objectives of Alpha Chi, which are to promote and to recognize superior scholarship and those elements of character that make for effective service, are the Alpha Chi colors: Blue for Truth, green for Victory, and gold for Knowledge. This symbolism is also found in the blue and green ribbon pinned on each candidate by the faculty or staff member of Piedmont College who has been especially requested by the candidate to perform this honor. 73 Front - left to right: Mark Wright, Susan Browne, Cindy Clegg, Ruth-Jean Guillaume, Suzanne Rice, Melanie Freeman, Lynn Caudell, Stacy Gordon. We hope you enjoy our work and treasure it as much as we treasure our thoughts of each of you. Thanks belong to many, especially the Yonahian Staff who made this book possible. Suzi with her camera, Stacy with her smile and the rest of the staff with th eir patience and cooperation as we struggled with deadlines, missing pictures, and endless layouts. Special thanks go to our two advisors Debbie Loftice, and Dianne Mize who kept us sane by being there. The greatest glory goes to God who provided us with the ideas and strength to put this book together. Climb every mountain in life as you reach it and don ' t be afraid of the other side.
