Green Literary Society was organized in 1897 solely for the purpose of developing and training the young men of Piedmont College mentally, morally and socially. Since then those who have experienced being a J. S. Green have recognized the vast importance of this society on the Piedmont campus. In their regular meetings each week the members feel free to enter the discussions and openly express themselves. Debating and speaking offer good training for those who wish to be able to speak in public. The members sincerely strive to take steps of advancement to enable them to go higher up the stairway of success, as expressed in their motto, Excelsior. Once a J. S. Green always a J. S. Green, is the whole-hearted sentiment of every old member and grew to be the sentiment of each and every one of the twenty- six new men taken in this year. A J. S. Green can always be recognized as a gentle- man who has the utmost respect for his fellow society members and sincerely believes in his societv. The Society strives not only to gain knowledge, but to bring together men of similar interests that they may enjoy each other ' s society and be bound together by ties of mutual friendship. Oscar Adams Guard Oscar came back to Piedmont after an absence of two year 1 ami proved to be the main cog in the Piedmont line, as well as a capable director of the Singing Saints. Roy Farmer .... Halfback (Alternate Captain) Ikey is one of the best football players to ever wear the Green and Gold. He can pass, run, punt, and block with equal efficiency, and his ioss will mean much to the future of Piedmont ' s athletics. Ralph Green Quarterback Ralph has been the outstanding defensive back on one of the best teams Piedmont has ever produced. R. L. Roth ell Guard Drugstore Rothell talked a good game of football and backed it up by hard block- ing on the field. Frank Smith Tackle P.ay Rum supplies the training table with its humor and the football field with its tight. Lester Gilbert Halfback Goo-Goo, like Dixie Howell, averaged six yards per run. He comes from a remote section of Alabama and has been a real inspiration for the Georgia lads. P. S. — Goo-Goo carried the ball once. Harold Linden Halfback Haddie is one Rhode Island Red who can truly crow over his ability to throw passes and carry the ball. Piedmont ' s athletics will depend very much on his return next year. Loraine Watson • Guard Demorest smiles as she presents the cream of the crop to Piedmont ' s team. Sanford Kirkland Tackle Boxer will long be remembered by the Hiawassee lads for his hard tackling. Piedmont is depending on him next year. Page 76 FOOTBALL Hoyt Williams Fullback Hoyt is a valuable man to the team, a dependable runner, and will long be remem- bered by the CO-eds as the man with the skinned nose. Y. A. Garner End Bull is one star that fell in Alabama and came to (ieorgia to show Piedmont how football should be played. Ramon Voigt Fullback Bud is an import from Pennsylvania and proved one of the outstanding first year men on the team. H. A. Carlton Center Commerce croons so that his opposition is held spellbound while he attacks his prey that would attempt to advance the pigskin over the middle of the line. Marshall Sutton Guard Marthy has shown the real Piedmont spirit during his tour years on the team and was a holy terror on offense and defense. Lawson Stapleton Guard (Captain) The old adage that a team is no better than its captain supplies the keynote to Piedmont ' s success. Slah ' s play was an inspiration to the entire team. Hu Butler End Although out for most of the season with injuries. IIu finished the season in a blaze of glory by his brilliant defensive play in final games. Wood Billingsley Center Dillinger hails from Alabama and is Piedmont ' s best assurance of a strong line next year. Jack Acree End Little but loud. Jack ' s ability to break up interference has caused him to be feared by the opposition. lie will long be remembered for his stickability. Little Forward Milton has a bright future in basket-ball. He is often called on to show the fans that Piedmont has more than five players. Lindsey Center Tom is a new man, but nevertheless delivers the goods. Farmer Guard Ikey is truly a running guard of great ability. He has been Piedmont ' s standby for four years. Carlton Forward Commerce is a steady player, always doing his part of the fighting. Black Guard Being a constant fighter made Black one of our most valuable players. Page 7 S BOYS ' BASKET-BALL Brooks Forward As a pivot man, he had no equal. He was also an excellent floor man. Whitr Guard Mit plays a wonderful game; he keeps the old ball rolling. BuiCE Center Luther has a spirit for basket-ball as was evidenced by his playing. ACREE Guard Little Jack relies on headwork and speed ; this gives him the advan- tage over his opponents at all times. Voigt Guard Bud believes that football is a forerunner of basket-ball. He is the comedian of the team. MlZE Guard Aubrey plays a consistent game. He holds his own and is much trouble to the opponents. f M, u GIRLS ' BASKET-BALL Self Forward If I had more than four years, I might make the team. That ' s Shorty ' s philosophy. She ' s little in stature but has plenty of pep. Puckett Guard Lou Anna knows her basket-ball. She is determined to break up the opposition no matter how strong. She has one more year to fight for Green and Gold. Grigsby Guard The woman who never missed practice! Giglesby was perfectly willing to do anything in her power to keep the other team from scoring. Hood Forward Koot, not very large in stature, but always willin ' to do her part to the best of her ability when called upon was a clean and hard player. Passmore Isabel showed great possibilities, but was forced to quit on account of extra work. McDonald Fonvard Ellen has made a good beginning. She has plenty of fight and de- termination. Reeve Fonvard Carolyn is another one of our Freshman players. She ' s made a good beginning; we hope she continues to manifest that speed which helps win games. Osborne Guard A football fan and a basket-ball player is the least that can be said about Sis. Page SO XI GIRLS ' BASKET-BALL Brewer Center Virginia is good at ettitiy; the tip-off, but the goals which she rings are what count. She ' s in the game from beginning to end and is hard to follow. Forrester Guard Frances came to us with a good record. We certainly expect great things from her during her four years at Piedmont. Wei.dex Guard Louise is a freshman. She has shown plenty of enthusiasm .... That ' s the Piedmont spirit, Louise. Martin . . Guard We ' re glad to see Wenonah out again this year. She ' s a sticker, a true sport, and loves the game. C()()K Forward (Captain) Jessie thrilled the basket-ball fans by her beautiful and graceful play- ing. She will be greatly missed when she leaves Piedmont. Dodd Guard This is Rubye ' s last year for Piedmont. For tour years she has shown grim determination and has been one of our best defensive players. Malcolm Guard Tillie comes from a family of great basket-ball players. If the opponents can ' t score, they can ' t beat us, is her motto. She does her part. Erwin Forward This is Kat ' s first year for Piedmont, but she comes to us with the ability to ring goals and handle the ball well. She ' s just the kind of player that Piedmont needs. Page 8 1 PROGRESS Down through the annals of Piedmont ' s history, there has always been a vision, a hazy mirage, distant and unattainable, of the erection of bleachers on the football field: but during the years it has re- mained a will-o ' -the-wisp. This year, in response to the appeal of Coach Forrester, the student body contributed the necessary funds to realize the dream and adorn Piedmont ' s gridiron with spacious bleach- ers. The achievements of the team were in keeping with the im- provements on the field. We are making real strides in the field of athletics. In addition to the bleachers some greatly needed grading has been done on the athletic field. After the sodding has been completed Haldeman Field promises to be one of which any college will be proud.
