PEpeT LE COLLEGE eth ak 1973-74 Oe OR A versatile man is one who is professor, Bible Conference speaker, interm pastor, revivalist, radio speaker, conductor of Bible studies, husband, and father. Our versatile man is a graduate of Piedmont. He has also attended Dallas Theological Seminary from which he graduated in 1960 with his ThM degree. He founded and pastored for five years the Sky Lake Baptist Church in Orlando, Florida. In the fall of 1965 our Maxwell House Coffee Man came to P.B.C. as profes- sor of theology. He is now a candidate for a ThD degree from Grace Theological Seminary. He is a warm, considerate, understanding professor who has mastered the arts of giving a hard exam and downing a good pot of coffee in no time at all. We the Fanal Staff are proud to dedicate the 1973-74 Fanal to Professor Hoyle E. Bowman. “And God said, Let there be light .. .” “God said, Let there be afirmament... and God called the Mal firmament heaven ... “And God said, Let the waters under the heaven be gathered together unto one place, and let the dry land appear .. .” i | fl H i | | | | | | | “God said, Let there be lights in the firmament _ . . to divide the day (fi from the night ... Each Tuesday evening from 6:30 to 7:30 there is a mission field represented with slides or films and a personal challenge given by a missionary. During the summer some mem- bers of P.M.F. travel to the field of their choice to learn about nfissions first-hand. No one has yet returned from the experience un- changed. The goal of P.M.F. is to show the First V.P.: Tim Darling relevance of missions for everyone, whether future missionary, pastor, or church worker. To sum it up, P.M.F. is people sharing bur- dens. On Monday night, many burdens are shared in prayer at Prayer Bands. Tuesday night is mainly a visual showing of both missionaries and students who have traveled to the field which is so white unto harvest. (Hosea 10:12). Hosea's call to Israel to turn to God is uniquely applicable to Piedmont this year. Land bought many years ago was broken on October 31, 1973 as the entire student body, many alumni and representatives of the Winston-Salem com- munity looked on. The site is that of a new chapel-gymnasium. Chapel, over the years, has met in four places. In the early years, the lower auditorium of Salem Baptist Church was classroom, dining hall and chapel. The main auditorium of Salem then was used with occasional chapels held in the Sam Morton Activity Building. Since the spring of 1972, when the Salem auditorium was razed, 36 BREAKING chapel has been held in the PBC cafeteria. It is with keen anticipation of His blessings that we looked forward to a more permanent home for our daily time to seek the Lord. Indoor athletic facilities have always been a problem. The YMCA, Red Shield Boys Club and city-owned facilities were the answer until Salem erected an activity building with us in mind. However, with the Salem Baptist Day School nearing 1,000 and the use of the same building for regular church services, it has be- come increasingly difficult to use the facility freely. Another valuable feature of this new building will be a new student center and bookstore. 334 DAY BY DAY Lina SANDELL. (Swedish) Tr. A. L. S. ; gs ee ee Se Ae 1. The Council is then subdivided into committees, each of which has the responsi- bility to oversee a particular aspect of student life. The Council endeavors to provide Christian fel- lowship and fun through a number of socials. The Athletic Committee has responsibilities which concern both the intramural and collegiate teams. The Council is also involved in school discip- line, helping to choose the Resident Assistants and working with the Student Relations Commit- tee. A Student Project is sponsored each year by the Council in an effort to add to or beautify the school. Emphasis is placed on the spiritual as- pect of the Council. It sponsors a weekly Chapel service featuring the senior ThB students and al- so a week-long Spiritual Life Conference each spring. In these ways,, the Student Council feels it can best foster a well-rounded program of student activities which will develop the spiritual, phy- sical, and social life of the students, to inspire loyalty to the school and the principles for which it stands, and to promote an efficient and har- monious school life. ie EN | | : } Te Fam Daring ies | b 5 HHL F Th Py as i, aN £ NE Craig Kempf SINVILSISSV LNICISda Jerry Shepherd Johnny Nunley Charlie Hornick Larry Harrison Dean Martin Wayne Fulton 52 SSPE IAS SNARE ARLE IRIS TI ESTA SEAS OT SL I RPI RENTS: © DSTI MT LER ES NA DERE OE ine Schoolfield Chri June Delnay Glenda Sinks Anne Covey Jan King Judy Hackaday Sherry Saunders Sylvia Welborn Gregg Cox Bernard Beverly Steve Green David Potts Charles H. On Saturday, December 8, 1973, at 8:00 PM, in the Sam Morton Activi- ties Building of the Salem Baptist Church, the Christmas story was beauti- fully portrayed through music. Under the direction of Professor Gordon Smith and Professor Jack Alexander, the Chorale and Chapel Choir, as well as the con- gregation, participated in this event. Before the choirs assembled in the auditorium, a trumpet medley of Christ- mas carols was presented as a prelude to the program. The Chorale and Chapel Choir then entered singing O Come All Ye Faithful. The choirs joined to- gether in singing the call to worship, followed by the invocation by President Donald K. Drake. Next followed Gloria in Excelsis by both choirs with trumpet and piano accompaniment. Several Christmas carols were sung by each choir, and a medley of Christmas carols was presented by Miss Patricia Norton at the piano. Dean Reinert was the narrator through- out the program. He read the Scriptures concerning the foretelling of Christ's birth, the nativity, the shepherds and the angels, the wise men, and Simeon and the child; each time being followed by numbers from each choir, solos, and a trio number. During the program, the congregation also joined in singing various Christ- mas carols, and Mr. Kenneth Yates presented the offeratory at the organ. Mrs. Mike Dykstra, and Miss Robin Mills were accompanists for the Chapel Choir and Chorale. After the benedic- tion by Rev. Carl Bollinger, the choirs proceded out of the candlelit auditorium singing the recessional Hark! The Herald Angels S ing. CHRISTMAS BANQUET In planning for the Christmas Banquet, we, of course, wanted something new and different from the past few banquets. We chose as our theme, The First Christmas. Although this doesn't sound new, we know that the birth of our Lord and his sacrifice for us should al- ways be fresh in our minds and hearts. As we approached Christmas from the side, apart from the lights and gaity, we sought to draw the college family closer to the Lord and to each other. The menu was prepared and served by our own Mr. and Mrs. William Holladay of the college Holladay Inn. The food was scrumptous and plentiful, leaving a well- filled and contented audience awaiting the program. Both program and decorations were simple. The tables and windows were decorated with candles, greenery and pine cones. The stage was set in a nativity scene. Mr. Terry Martin read the Christmas story, which was inter- spersed with musical selections performed by various members of the staff, faculty, students, and faculty children. The program was con- cluded by a Christmas prayer -- that this Christmas might be one characterized by the love of Christ and that this Spirit of Christmas might continue throughout the year. baie dali taba ey (Wie 08 ey, her PINT TPITEM TSIEN UNE trL er Heneseuericnits use BEGINNING TO MAKE PROGRESS Dr. William E. Sampson was a friend of Piedmont Bible College throughout its his- tory. He served the school officially and _unofficially in many ways. He was on the Faculty, Administration, and Board of the College, and in addition, he spent his years of retirement as an official repre- sentative of the school. His dedication to the Word and the Lord of the Word was evident to all who knew him. His ability to outline clearly and succinctly has been an inspiration to many. Many have studied under this man of God and the effects of that teaching is evident in the ministry of these people. It is a rich heritage that they have. Dr. Sampson entered Glory on January 1, 1974. What a great way to start the new year. We are all thankful that we knew him and it ought to be our prayer that as we reflect on his memory that our attention may be focused on the Lord that Dr. Sampson loved and served so well. srisdiobe els bed lededale elelabephalatal 290 AND CAN IT BE CHARLES WESLEY THOMAS CAMPBELL e _— (_ WW 4 Cee ne SR a ee SSeS £a © ... 2 eee a De Col Che Re EE _) [oe ee Ean (04 - Gaeay 0, © es BS OB |S SE I a oo es £3 I (ee SE) ES CS a SS 66 2S Ses BEE eo Oe) er 6 ee eee S Yew aa Go 1. Just being able to sit down, sense His presence, and know He really cares is great. Second, it has been to realize that PBC is not an in- doctrination program where we come in and open our minds and pour in all the know- ledge. The school has given us a basis to begin to think for ourselves. WHAT DO YOU FEEL IS THE LARGEST jv CONTRIBUTION THAT THE SENIOR || CLASS HAS MADE TO PBC? There is is co-operation among the members of the ly class and the other classes. There is an attitude of fellowship among the entire school. It has been a gracious attitude. For eight weeks, home is where you hang your hat each day, and the college van becomes, in addition to transportation, a napping lounge, study on wheels, snack shop, and the site of numerous pranks, lengthy discussions, and the family-type fellowship that only six people on tour can know and experience. If eight weeks travelling around the country seems like a lark, it is far from that. The schedule is demanding and one has to be careful to pace himself so that he stays fresh for the entire tour. When the daily meetings become routine, there sets in a devastating hinderance to effective service for the Lord. The daily schedule varies in proportion to the length of the trip for that day. After breakfast in the homes where the team members stay, it's gathering time for a period of team devotions and practice. Then, with all the luggage in place and college promotional material stacked away, the route is charted for that day's trip and the team is on the road once again. Lunches, with the exception of Sunday's, are eaten en route and generally by late afternoon the team pulls into the town where the evening's meeting is to be held. If directions are accurate, the pastor's home is located and after introductions, one of the highlights of the day is observed - mail call! The evening meal is often eaten in the homes where the team members will spend the night, although it's not uncommon for a family or fami- lies to host team members for the evening meal and another group of families provide overnight lodging. Days off are always welcome reprieves from the busy schedule of singing, preaching and meeting people. They also provide a much needed op- portunity to visit the laundromat and dry cleaners. Summer team werk is an energetic time of service but year after year tired team members return to campus grateful for the opportunity they've had to minister as members of a Piedmont summer gospel team. It has been a real blessing to see Him work through people in the way He has. | would like to express my, as well as the staff's, appreciation to our Faculty Advisor, Mr. Thompson for all of his advice, patience, and encouragement in working with us. We would like to thank Mr. Howard Walker for his many hours of hard work in taking pictures and also our student photographers. A word of thanks goes to Josten's American Year- book Co. for their help.
