.-. ml- DECK DEPARTMENT X LT F. R. SMITH, USN FIRST LIEUTENANT As long as a ship exists there will always be a Deck Department. The sailors who work under it are responsible for keeping the compartments, lines, rigging, decks, and deck machinery in shipshape condition. They also act as lookouts, are members of gun crews, helmsmen, and are on the security force. Deck Department is divided into three divisions. First Division is responsible for all topside spaces forward of the superstructure while Second Division is re- sponsible for the area aft. The Gunner's Mates comprise Third Division and are responsible for the safety of the ship's ammunition storage, the performance of PICTOR's 40mm battery, and the small arms in the Ship's Armory. ' 7
