COMBS, USN Commander Service Force, U.S. Pacific Fleet Captain John S. OLLER Jr., USN Commander Service Squadron SEVEN - HISTORY OF PIC The U.S.S. PICTOR QAF-545 was formerly the SS GREAT REPUBLIC and was named PICTOR by the Navy Department after a southern constellation. The keel of PICTOR was laid on 18 March 1942 at Moore Shipbuilding Company, Qakland, y California. Upon her completion in June of 1943 she was delivered to the United States Maritime Commission and was operated by the Commission as the SS GREAT REPUBLIC. From this time until April 1950, she served under various charters, including the United Fruit Company and the Pacific Far East Lines of San Francisco California. In April 1950, she was returned to the Maritime Commission and was moored in an inactive status in Suisun Bay, California. ' In September of 1950 the U.S. Navy acquired the ship from the Maritime Com- mission for conversion into an auxiliary stores type ship. For this conversion she A was sent to the U.S. Navy Shipyard at Mare Island, California. On 18 October 1950 the U.S. PICTOR was commissioned by Rear Admiral Frank D. BEATTY and Com- mander John V. CAMMERON became her first Commanding Officer. Since that moment when she turned to active duty with the U.S. Pacific Fleet, PICTOR has made several tours to the Far East carrying out her mission of pro- viding food stores to the combat units of the SEVENTH Fleet. Immediately after PICTOR was commissioned, she made three tours to the Western Pacific provid- ing stores to the combatant forces during the Korean Conflict.Following this cam- paign PICTOR was devoted to making routine deployments to supply logistic ser- vices to the deployed occupation forces, which included the Taiwan Patrol. She is now journeying home from her eighth and final mission since the start of the Viet- namese War, PICTOR has operated alternately between the FIRST AND SEVENTH Fleets and during her final years was assigned to each of them for alternate periods of approximately three months. In the nineteen years of commissioned service, PIC TOR has had seventeen Commanding Officers. During the first ten years the Commanding Officer held the rank of Commander. Since that time the Commanding Officer has been a Captain. However, there was a two month period in 1961 when a Lieutenant was the Com- manding Officer. PICTOR will be inactivated on November 20th and will be decommissioned shortly thereafter. However, PICTOR will remain in the memories of the officers and crew that served her as the FINEST AF IN THE FLEET for many years to come. ANDING OFFICER i i DEDICATIGN To a proud proficient crew Whomanned this Giant of the Fleet And passed the food to more than few And kept combatants fit to meet The challenges of grueling life In South East Asia with its strife. To wives and parents, sweethearts too, Who spent long days in real devotion Standing by at home so true While those they love did sail the oceang Without whose patience and foresight PICTOR crew would have had less might To PICTOR who historically Has been a credit and of fame For service finest on the sea For nineteen years since she became A Navy ship, but now to rest With memoirs ranking with the best. V. K. ROUX Commanding Officer ' 1 EXECUTIVE OFFICERS LCDR J, C, SMITEH, USN LCDR L. E. HERBERT, USN The Executive Officer plays a very important role in the activities of the ship His basic function is to act as an aide or executive to the Commanding Officer. He is specifically charged with executing the order of the Commanding Officer and with coordinating and supervising the performance and administration of the com- mand, He is responsible for matters pertaining to the morale, rights and privi- leges, training, welfare, work, exercises, and safety of individuals within the command. PICTOR had two Executive Officers during 1969. Lieutenant Commander SMITH reported aboard on 26 February 1968 and was our Executive Officer throughout the first cruise. Lieutenant Commander SMITH was relieved by Lieu- tenant Commander HERBERT on 16 July 1969 and was rotated to Naval Air Sta- tion Alameda for his next duty assignment. Lieutenant Commander HERBERT was Port Services Officer at Treasure Island, San Francisco, California, before he reported aboard PICTOR. ------T- ' '-- - - - ' 'ro' .-. ml- DECK DEPARTMENT X LT F. R. SMITH, USN FIRST LIEUTENANT As long as a ship exists there will always be a Deck Department. The sailors who work under it are responsible for keeping the compartments, lines, rigging, decks, and deck machinery in shipshape condition. They also act as lookouts, are members of gun crews, helmsmen, and are on the security force. Deck Department is divided into three divisions. First Division is responsible for all topside spaces forward of the superstructure while Second Division is re- sponsible for the area aft. The Gunner's Mates comprise Third Division and are responsible for the safety of the ship's ammunition storage, the performance of PICTOR's 40mm battery, and the small arms in the Ship's Armory. UUR MISSION PICTOR's job is food . . . food for supplying ships of the Fleet, at sea or in port so they can maintain their on the line status. This is accomplished by an UNREP or INREP fUNderWay REP1enishment and INport REPlenishmentJ. The role which we play in the Navy's supply system is very rewarding to us for it is our job to transfer dry or canned goods and other assorted fresh and frozen items to our fellow shipmates at sea. PICTOR is not a new ship and we do not have many of the automations that the new supply ships have. However, we still are known for our ability to trans- fer the chow in an efficient manner. The hours during an UNREP are some- times long and tedious but we have full knowledge of our job and we work at it diligently. We are proud of our ship and our job . . . When PICTOR is deployed in the Western Pacific everyone on board is somehow involved with ensuring that her UNREP'sfINREP's are made in a smooth. professional manner, When she is not in the combat zone much time is devoted to the training of her crew and keeping her in shipshape condition, But there is time for relaxation and fun too. The daily shipboard life is broken by such things as bingo games, skeet shoots, tournaments, and smokers. Boxing matches, ice cream eating and egg throwing contests, and folk singing are just a few of the things enjoyed by the crew on a warm Sunday afternoon during a smoker, A bar- beque to meet any chef 's delight always proceeds the festivities. Throughout the week the crew can relax in the newly remodeled lounge, watch the nightly movie, or participate in a variety of games that are available. 36 I spain' uZ',.'Nil 'lT ,ww , I ,, V ,. AWARDS AND PRESENTATIONS In the old Navy the main deck area surrounding the main mast of the ship was the meeting place of the crew for various ceremonial functions. Gone are the mighty main masts with bleached sails, but the mustering of the crew for various functions has remained an integral Naval tradition known as Command ing Officer's Commendatory Mast. Commendatory Mast aboard PICTOR is frequent. Within the period of our two last cruises sailors have been honored for a gamut of achievements. Some the higher medals awarded have been the Bronze Star Medal, Navy Commenda- tion Medal, Navy Achievement Medal, Purple Heart, Good Conduct Medal, and the Vietnamese Medal Honour. Reenlistments, retirement ceremonies, promo- tions to Petty Officer, Sailor of the Month Awards, recognition for academic achievement, citations for performance of duty, and trophies for intramural sports have also occupied the agenda of PICTOR's Commendatory Mast.
