Pickett M5 Bern, Kan. 20 Berryton, Kan. at Pickett Pickett Sl Berryton, Kan. 26 FOOTBALL HISTORY The Pickett Cardinals rolled up their fifth straight Platte Valley Conference Championship without a loss to any of the conference foes in the five year stretch, The Cardinals had all but a perfect season with an 8-1 record. The Cardinals suf- iered their only loss at the hands of a very big, strong and fast Farragut, Iowa eam. The Cardinals scored noe points, while their opponents scored 2Oh, giving them an average of h5.3 points per game. The Card1nals'placed two players of their squad on the Six-Man All-Star Team. Gordon 'Goose' Lemar and Charles Red' Heerlein were selected for first team berths Bob Wilson was selected for a second team berth. Pickett placed three men on the All-Conference Team. Gordon Lemar, Red , Heerlein, and Bob Wilson were first team berths. Bob Herring and Bob East were selected for second team berths. The 1952 team was well-talented and always had a balanced scoring attack. Prospects for next year's team look very prosperous with 12 returning lettermen. We feel sure we will have another good season. Lettermen for 1952: Seniors, Lemar, Wilson, Willis, J. Miller, and Ackley. Juniors, Heerlein, East, Simpson, Peek, Bolz, and Nelson. Sophomoresg Herring, Testerman, R. Miller, Noel, and Holmes. Freshmeng Catron and Butchart. SPOTUIGBTS Coach Harven Weed, his first year as coach or tne Pickett Cardinals, made an 1mpP6S81V9 beginning as his Redbirds scored a GBCISIVQ bd-26 Platte Valley Confer- ence football victory over Union Star. Five Pickett players figured ln the scor- ing: Gordon Lemar, Redn Heerlein, Bobby East, Bob Wilson, and Bill Willis. The Pickett Cardinals won thelr second straight conference game by bowling over Clarksdale, M8-19. It was a team victory with the following six men scoring: Bob Wilson, Jimmy Noel, Red Heerlein, Carl Bolz, Larry Ackley, and Bill Willis. The Cardinals rolled up their third victory by trimming Hopkins, 39-0. They held on by a comparatively slim margin at the half, but through teamwork, they turned the game into a rout after intermission, Four of the Cardinals scored and were defensively backed up by their teammates. The fourth strai ht conference victory for the Cardinals was gained by romp- ing over Easton, hh-li. It was a team victory with six men scoring. Farragut again! Pickett met their first defeat in a non-conference game with the strong Farragut, Iowa team, 67-28. Lemar and Heerlein was the scoring combi- nation for Pickett with the help of their team ates. The Cardinals came back from their defeat to wallop North Platte, 55-lk, clinching at least a tie for the conference championship. Heerlein, Holmes, Wil- son, Peek, Willis, and Herring scored for the Cardinals. The Platte Valley Conference crown was won when the Cardinals defeated Ste- wartsville, MO-18, with Lemar, Wilson, East, Ackley, Bolz, and Jack Miller adding up the points. ' V Pickett tabbed their seventh victory by trimming Bern, Kansas, h5-20, in a six-man football high-light. Each team had been defeated once previously going into this battle. Seven Redbirds scored. Pickett ended their 1952 season with a Homecoming victory over Berryton, Kan- sas, 51-26. Lemar, Wilson, Ackleyy Miller, and Willis played their final game for Pickett with an outstanding perfonmance.
