IT’S A SMALL WORLD Administra tion 11 Favorites 71 Classes 19 Organizations 91 Elementary 49 Sports 103 It's a world of laughter, a world of tears. It’s a world of hope and a world of fears. 3 that we share That it's time we're aware Editors’ Message We at Pickering come together at a crossroad in the community and we leave at a crossroad in our lives. Many of us have grown up in Pickering and at Pickering High School, and our lives have blended with the students that make up our transient military community. So much has happened to all of us at school. We have learned to win, to lose, to live, to love, to respect, to appreciate, and we’ve even learned a little that’s in our books. We have grown in so many ways that will help us to adapt and grow in the adult world. Putting this yearbook together as a team has certainly given us insight into the responsibility that we’ll need and we hope that looking through it will show each of you that Pickering gives each of us the qualities needed in the world out there and that it is indeed A SMALL WORLD. Co-editors Monica Haymon Doug Clark 5 Memoriam - 6 Ricky Wayne Brown, son of Melvina and Joe Brown was born on Nov. 23, 1951. He attended Pickering High School until he graduated in 1969 as Mr. PHS. Ricky continued to live in the Pickering community contributing to its growth and progress. He then married the former Deborah Ann James on Aug. 30 with whom he had two beautiful children. Heather Danielle and Ricky Wayne Brown, Jr. Ricky will always be remembered for his love of the outdoors and love of life. His absence will be felt by all of us who knew and loved him. REMEMBER ME Remember me in quiet days While raindrops whisper on your pane; But in your memories have no grief; Let just the joy we knew remain. Remember me when evening stars Look down on you with stead- fast eyes; Remember me if once you wake To catch a glimpse of red sunrise. And when your thoughts do turn to me. Know that I would not have you cry; But live for me and laugh for me— When you are happy, so am I. Remember an old joke we shared; Remember me when spring walks by; Think once of me when you are glad. And while you live, i shall not die. Heather Kirkwood Dedication Herman Blackmon graduated from Pickering High School and attended L. S. U. He married the former Euna Brown and is the father of three grown children. Mr. Blackmon has resided in the Pickering community and been a farmer, rancher and minister most of his adult life. He is a dedicated man, a man dedicated not only to God, but to children as well. For the past 31 years Mr. Blackmon has served the Pickering community, taking special care, as he drives his bus, of those children who are so dear to us. He also serves on the Board of Directors for Beauregard Electric and the Agriculture County Committee. Mr. Blackmon retired to devote more time to his church and his cattle farm. Not many people are capable of doing the outstanding job Mr. Blackmon has done. Mr. Blackmon, you are truly a success. Success I hold no dream of fortune vast Nor seek undying fame. I do not ask when life is past That many know my name. I may not own the skill to rise To glory's topmost height. Nor win a place among the wise, But I can keep the right. And I can live my life on earth Contented to the end. If but few shall know my worth And proudly call me friend. 7 Edgar A. Theirs has been a unique task: that of viewing objec- tively the school’s activities while at the same time participating in them. These young people and their faculty advisers have combined creative ability and a great degree of dedication in accomplishing the goals they set months ago. For their special efforts we are grate- ful. because in years to come the 1979-80 yearbook will only increase in its value to us. Like the yearbook staff, our faculty, staff and students throughout the parish have worked dili- gently to achieve their goals also. Significant progress is evident in our school system as we review past months, and I am pleased that we have met our challenges well. Our nation’s homes and schools are greatly responsible for America’s position of world leader- ship. As we enter a new decade, the 1980’s, let us take stock of our country's goals and prepare ourselves for even higher levels of proficiency and productivity. I wish for each of you much success. Sincerely, 2. C. Creighton Owen Superintendent 12 Sincerely, Y t . t v. James H. Hardin Principal Principal’s Message J Dear Friends: Congratulations! Your efforts have been “super.” May you cherish the pleasant memories of your school days at Pickering and continue to uphold the standard that has been set: “To do as best we can with what we have to work with.” I believe that you are the “best of all. My prayer is for our Lord and Master to bless each of you. Assistant Principal’s Message As the school year draws to an end, it is with great pride that I address myself to the greatest student body in Louisiana. Many accomplishments have been achieved during the year. However, we must look toward the future and not boast over our past achievements. To you Seniors of 1980, remember, only the groundwork has been laid; it is now time for you to pick up the reins and continue where others have left off. Congratulations to the yearbook staff and sponsor for providing each of us with memories which will remain a part of us throughout our lives. The 1979-80 school year has been a pleasant one. May all the succeeding years be as pleasurable and the future hold only enjoyable experiences for us all. Sincerely, ftJU W. Asst. High School Principal Elementary Director’s Message Congratulations to all who had a part in producing this 1979-80 Red Devil Yearbook.
