I have learned the real meaning of hard work, an have enjoyed the opportunity to work with the people of our staff. This has given me a better understanding of the co-operation it takes to compile this book. But the one great lesson I learned was how it feels to know that in 10. 15, or 25 years we can all look back and say, We made this 1977 yearbook. The feeling of satisfaction is something to be proud of. To all the members of this 1977 Annual Staff, I give my thanks for much hard work, and to the sponsor, Mrs. Pelt, my appreciaton for time and patience. Potter. S. Martin The Pickering PTA has tried to realize its mandate of providing students with the opportunity to fulfill their potential through a united effort of parents, teachers, school staff, and community leaders. Our students have provided a common band for direction, inspiration and strength. Over 150 members of Pickering PTA rallied to promote the educational sequence, health, safety, social development, and growth of our students, school and community. What a marvelous spirit of cooperation, dedication and pride. The association has sponsored a music recital, band concert, drug educational program, and a presentation of the culture of Middle East countries. Also, the PTA supported special holiday functions for elementary grades and conducted a success- ful fund drive. As in the past, monies were expended for scholarships, school improvements and supported school - sponsored organizations. Many wonderful opportunities exist for Pickering School and its development wil continue to require support from all of us. I, along with the PTA officers, feel proud and honored to have served during the 1976-77 school year. Our prayers and support will continue as Pickering strives toward new horizons. rj C , K. Gerald E. Russell President Pickering School PTA Dedication Mr. John C. Littleton has taught for over 19 years. So faithful was he, that he returned to Pickering High School after graduating from here in 1944 and after successfully seeking a B.A. Degree from McNeese St. University. Through his faithful dedication to a teaching career, many young people have been influenced to better themselves and are grateful to such a man. Mr. Littleton is presently the pastor of Canaan Baptist Church. He is married to the former Faye Haymon. They are the proud parents of four boys, two who are graduates of Pickering High School and two who are still attending school. Mr. Littleton is also a grandfather of two grandchildren. The students and the community have considered it a pleasure to know him. In Memoriam Mr. Robert David Tilley Mr. Tilley served our school and student body for twelve years. He did his job faithfully, sin- cerely and most imponant, lovingly. Mr. Tilley was proud of many things but above all, he was an American. Standing proud for, and of all, it meant to be an American. 1 DO NOT CHOOSE TO BE A COMMON MAN It is my right to be uncommon . . . if I can. 1 seek opponunity ... not security. I do not wish to be a kept citizen, humbled and dulled by having the state look after me. I want to take the calculated risk: to dream and to build, to fail and to succeed. I refuse to barton incentive for a dote. I prefer the challenges of life to the guaranteed existence: the thrill of fulfillment to the state calm of utopia. I will not trade freedom for beneficence nor my dignity for a handout. I will never cower before any master nor bend to any threat. It is my heritage to stand erect, proud and unafraid: to think and act for myself: enjoy the benefits of my creations and to face the world boldly and say: this I have done. All this is what it means to be an American. i ‘57’ Girls’ Team Wins District, Goes on to State BASKETBALL TEAM 1st Row: Dorell Brister, Nelva Gaspard, Nelwyn Bush, Betty Brumley. 2nd Row: Patricia Durr, Myrtle Tessier, Archie Blackmon. 3rd Row: Bonnie Hardin, Ruthy McLaren, Betsy Mitchell, Bobbie Perkins. The accomplishments of this goal can be achieved by each of us striving to take full advantage of the wonderful opportunities that are offered to us daily in our schools, our homes and our communities. The many fine accomplishments that have been recorded in this outstanding yearbook are evidence of your contribution toward achieving this goal. You are to be commended for each of them. May these only be the beginning steps you have taken toward numerous future accom- plishments. My very best wishes to you for much success and happiness in your future endeavors. C. Stanly Principal’s Message Dear Friends, Thanks to you, it’s working. We have had an outstanding school year. Many times I have wished that we had started a list of the accomplishments that you the student body and community have accomplished. It would be extremely long already, and as we all know, there is still room for improvements. One of the most outstanding accomplishments has been winning district in boys’ basketball. Let’s all keep on keeping on — never fail to Give God the praise he is due. Sincerely, 12 S. Forquhar - Speech V. Smith - Science R. - J. Potter - Music A. Moss - English W. HOBIT Pickering, with the counselor, Mr. Gene Haymon, felt the need for a new program, one that would benefit the younger students. Our club is based upon Teen Involvement designed to prevent younger chil- dren from turning to drugs. We chose the name HOBIT as our official title because it implies ''a small person”; but more important, it stands for Helping Others Believe in Themselves. This is HOBIT's goal. A member's qualifications are: 1) A member of at least two other clubs, 2) Must have a 3.0 average, 3) Is drug free, not a user of any drugs, 4) Is of high school age attending school, 5) Is responsible can be depended upon, 6) Is willing to give time before, during, and after school, 7) Has a goal in life - to prevent younger children from using drugs, 8) Is capable of maintaining acceptable grades (as some classes will be missed), 9) Is a participant in other school activities, 10) Is friendly - cares for others. A HOBIT is a friend to all boys and girls. 91 Memories Small talk The Reigning Mr. and Miss 91 5th and 6th grade girls' Basketball - 2nd place DeRidder Tourney Coach: Miss Vickie Tate Behind the Scenes FHA Car Wash Sleeping Beauties? rrrrrrrrr MUVOUmONARYWAJUT7S-17$3 fMfOt ! ! • 0 fM4 MUWiAII IMANI .
