Red Devil for 1976 Administration Elementary Advertisements Favorites 117 Organizations Seated L-R: Mrs. Mitchel - Sec., Maj. Gerald Russell - Vice-President, Mr. Murphy O'Banion, William Andrews - President Treasurer PTA The PTA is as the name implies, a parent-teacher associa- tion united in their efforts to promote the welfare of children in the home, school, and community. The organization is committed to bringing the home and the school into a closer relationship; that parents and teach- ers may co-operate in the education of youth. Each year the project committee selects a project for the year and the fund raising activities are directed toward that project. We sponsor two $100.00 College scholarships each year for two deserving students. Past projects have been the purchase of the school activity bus, purchasing the school air condi- tioners and intercom system, basketball warm-ups and trav- eling bags, drums for music, and cement play court. The Pickering PTA is the oldest active unit in the parish and I'm proud to have served as president for the year 1975- 76. Sincerely 1  • V « I William E. Andrews Editor’s Message As you look through the pages of this 1976 Red Devil, you will bring back to thought many memories of your days at Pickering. May all of these memories be happy ones and stay with you for the rest of your days. 1 would like now to recognize each of the hard working members of the Annual Staff. Being editor of this yearbook, I had to work with each of the members of its staff. As I worked with them, I watched them put many hours of hard work and much of themselves into the pages of this pictorial history of Pickering High School. I would also like to give my appreciation to those who helped the staff by buying an ad, making a contribution, or by signing the Alumni Page to help make this publication possible. Sincerely, Homer Clark, Editor In Memoriam Mrs. Eula Brown Bartlett Mrs. Eula - My Johnny's sick, he's got a high fever and 1 can't get it down. Can you help?” Mrs. Eula - My wife burned her hand and 1 need some- thing for it. Can you help?” The flame that burned from this candle has been snuffed out. But the illustrious low from that light shall never dim. For in the heart of our community lies the deep appreciation for the compassion with strength, the dedication to mankind and its suffering, and service to others rather than herself that she is displayed so - Weep not, weep not She is not dead; She's resting in the bosom of Jesus. Heart-broken husband - weep no more; Grief-stricken son - weep no more; Left-lonesome daughter - weep no more; She's only just gone home. 4 James Weldon Johnson In Memoriam Patrick Jacob Stephens Mr. Patrick Jacob Stevens lived in Vernon Parish all of his life and attended Davis New School. He worked at Pickering High School as one of our efficient custodians several years and was still working at the time of his death, July 18, 1975. Mr. Stephens took great pride in keeping our building attractive and in tip-top shape. We were certainly honored and grateful to have had him with us. Have courage for the great sorrows of life and patience for the small ones, and when you have finished your daily task, go to sleep in peace . . . Victor Hugo In Dedication Huel Johnson Mr. Huel Johnson was one of the 15 bus drivers who regarded his job as important as it truly is. Mr. Huel Johnson drove a bus for Pickering School from 1943-1975. Regardless of weather conditions or personal priorities, he could be depended on to do his job, faithfully. When the day returns, call us up with morning faces and with morning hearts, eager to labor, happy if happiness be our portion, and if the day be marked for sorrow, strong to endure. 6 Robert Louis Stevenson ADMINISTRATION Tenderly now let all men turn to the earth Nancy Newhall Superintendent's Message My congratulations to the yearbook staff and sponsors for the efforts they have made in making this publication so informative. You, the students for whom this work is intended, will find that its value increased with each passing year. It is a priceless record for your parents and will become the same for you in the next decade. I commend you on your accomplishments and may these experiences bring both satisfaction and honor to you in the years ahead. Sincerely, Cjtdul Curtis Bradshaw Superintendent School Board Member Murphy O’Banion Vernon Parish School Board Seated L to R: P. K. Lewis, Bennard McKee. Faculty, and Friends: As our nation's 200th birthday approaches I look back and remember the pleasant things that have happened to us. I think of the improvements that you have made, the advances, and the interest you have in your school. These are just a few things for which we are thankful. Let us not forget, they were made possible by hard work and sacrifice: that many times problems oversha- dow the pleasant things in life, if we let them. But as long as God blesses us and we work together, we shall succeed. Sincerely, James H. Hardin 10 High School Faculty Sharon Blasingame Business, World Geo. Sharon Floyd Coach, P.E. The many events you have recorded here serve as a review of your activities during this past year. In a very short time this same record of events will become beautiful treasures you have stored in a book of memories. May this school year have provided you wtih necessary skills to become a better citizen of tomorrow but, most of all, may it have instilled in you a gTeat love, for this, your alma mater.
