I am especially proud of you since, you were beginners in school when I began teaching here twelve years ago. I sincerely hope you find your place in life as successfully as you have here in school. Very sincerely, A 1 Dixie Houston Secretary to Superintendent Left to Right: Bob Nichols, Lyndon Scott, Ralph Leslie, Ray Harrell, and Rex Garrett, Roger Graham picture unavailable. To The Students of Picher High School. Education, broadly interpreted, comprises all the efforts both direct and indirect, made by society to accomplish certain objectives that are considered desirable. These efforts may be put forth by organized society as a whole or by a smaller group such as a political party or a religious group. The goals, too, may be formulated either in the interest of society at large or by self seeking segments of society. The importance of education as an agency for modifying the behaviour of people has been increasing during the past few years. It is your job as a consumer of education to make sure that you are getting the most and best for your educational dollar by taking an active interest in your school and its progress. I congratulate you on the completion of a year of fine work. May all our future relations be as cordial and reward- in Patricia, seven, plays the piano and everybody sings at the Neighbor's. Debra is three, and David just now one. The family spent last year at O.S.U. where Mr. Neighbors studied sci- ence on a scholarship. I-le is a Northeastern State graduate, and earned his Masters at O.S.U. The Neighbors have been here seven years. Chemistry is his subject. The Harrells are pictured in a charming setting Mr. Ray Harrell teaches a class in American literature. Mrs. Cleo Harrell is the instructor for all commercial classes, and she also spon- sors the pep club and the seventh grade. Ray Jr. is a freshman at Tulsa University and Deanna is a ninth grader at P.H.S. Mr. and Mrs. Harrell have been in Picher for twelve years. They have B.A. degrees from East Central State, and Mr. Harrell received his Masters degree at O.U. OUR FACULTY Picher High School teachers enjoy their homes, hobbies, and other out-of-school activities. They like to read, garden, play games, eat snacks, watch television, and go to church. We show them here with their families at some of their own special interests. Reading is ofcourse a favorite way of spending time for all teachers, whether their reading is done for fun or for studying. They grow flowers by the hundreds and have a lot at it. For our coach, 'Bo' Spoon, Saturday afternoon means solid comfort, an easy chair, a cup of coffee, a game on television, and two pretty ladies for good company. The girls are, of course, Anita, who is Mrs. Spoon, and Cinda, a second grader. Mr. Spoon teaches science and social studies, and is also one of the ninth grade sponsors. His B.A. degree was earned at South- western College at Winfield, Kansas. This is his seventh year at P. H. S. A Football know-how is started early at the Bob Thompsons'. That is Danny, age 9, grade by his daddy at the left. Peggy, Mrs. Thompson, is holding eleven-months-old Tammi, and Ricky, who is twelve years old and in the sixth grade, at the right waiting his turn for instructions. Mr. Thompson is our head basketball coach this year and teaches journalism, English, and physical education. He attended Miami junior college and took his B.S. degree at Pittsburg State College at Pittsburg, Kansas. He has been teaching at P.H.S. for seven years. The eighth grade claims him as their sponsor. 4, standing is standing Clarence Doc and Dixie Houston express their energy playing a round of golf. They are sports fans and are loyal supporters of all the teams of P.H.S. Their son Tommy is grown-up and is away from home. Doc teaches English and history and sponsors the sophomore class, but we think his first love is his junior high ath- letic teams, both football and basketball. He is a Northeastern State graduate, holding a B.A. degree, Dixie is secretary to Mr. Harrell. Doc has taught eight years at P.H.S. 6 FAMILY SCENES Playing games is a part of everyday living for them, as is watch- ing television and going for snacks. They go to church and many of them teach Sunday School classes or work as church board members or in some other capacity. They go on picnics or just relax. We are proud of our teachersg they are our friends who help us fill our days with activities that help us grow both mentally and physically. Every day seems a holiday when the McMullins gather in the back yard for a barbecue. Those fine boys, Larry, in the first grade this year, and Gary, who is three years old, are the younger generation. Grace, a former P.H.S. student, is Mother. Daddy, H. C. McMullin, is teaching in his sixth year at P.H.S. He teaches science and social studies and in charge of all audio-visual activities at our school. His college days were spent at East Central State from which he earned his B.A. degree. Mr. and Mrs. Hanna enjoy doing things together. Having their friends in and making their yard look its best are their favorite ways to relax. Here Mr. Hanna is working in the flowers, and Mrs. Hanna seems to be giving directions just how it should be done. Mrs. Ruth Hanna has taught in our school eleven years. She took her B.A. degree from Northeastern State and sponsors the junior class and the Future Teachers of America. One family gives us two teachers who have been around a long time. Mrs. Paul Douthitt is in her twenty-second year in this school and Mr. Douthitt, his seventeenth year. Mr. Douthitt is our driver education instructor in high school and teaches mathematics in junior high. They earned their degrees at Northeastern State. Mr. Douthitt sponsors the seventh grade and the Safety Club, and Mrs. Douthitt teaches English in junior high and is faculty advisor for the ZINCO staff. Their special place is the back yard under the apple tree, their special interests are their children and grandchildren. 7 ...-W . ...,- aa warm , ,,,- m - --M... ws... At home with the Harold McLains means a good time for all. This picture seems to indicate that Emma Lou, an eighth grader, and her dad do not have a chance in this game. Mother is the champion! Mrs. Willo McLain is our Home Economics teacher and a planner of banquets par excellence. She acts as advisor of activities for the 4-H Club. Pittsburg State College at Pitts- burg, Kansas, is her school where she was awarded a B.S. degree. She has taught here for ten years. Great bowls of popcorn! Doesn't this look like fun? Two -year-old Kathy's smile appeared like the sunshine after the picture was taken and Daddy let her get her little hands into that big bowl. Myrna, on the right is in the sixth grade. She is the elementary school ZINCO Queen this year. The Fred Osbornes have been with us for seven years. Mr. Osborne teaches vocational auto-mechanics at P.H.S. He is also a junior sponsor, so that means he should be able to make good hot dogs and coffee. He took a B.S. degree at Northeastern State and a M.S. degree in vo- cational teaching at O.S.U. Howard Hudson and his mother, Mrs. Hazel Davis, make this little family group. Honey, the little dog, poses like a veteran. He could have had some acting lessons. Mr. Hudson received his B.A. degree from Northeastern State and is teaching speech and English in P.H.S. for the fourth year. The planning of all plays and assemblies is his special duty. The Byrl Gowins seem to have fun together. This combination of kids, cats, and phonograph records give the evidence. The children are John, twelve years old and in the sixth grade, Kathy Lynn, eight years old and in the third grade, and Rea Jean, seven years old and in the second grade. Mr. Gowin has taught mathematics for three years at P.H.S. He is a sophomore sponsor. At S.M.S. in Springfield, Missouri, he won a B.S. degree, and from Missouri University he has a M.E. 8 Mrs. Deal is our librarian. We always find her when we want something special in readings and reports. She teaches some junior high classes in social studies and science too. She holds a B.S. with high honors and a masters degree from Pitts- burg State College, and has taught at P.H.S. for thirteen years. This year she is a sponsor for the eighth grade. She and Mr. Deal live at Treece where he has retired this year after thirty-five years as a hardware merchant. They are pictured with their little dog Mike who has a very special place in their he arts. Who is the star of this show? The center of attrac- tion? The attention getter? It is Larry Puryear III, just sixteen months old. Mother KariZoe and Daddy Larry II just look on with admiration and shouldn't everyone? I-Ie's just great! Dad Larry has been teaching here for seven ears. He teaches science in both 'unior and Y J senior high school. The student council looks to him for advice and leadership. His Alma Mater is Northeastern State where he took his degree. The smiles here tell the story of a family who just plain like each other. Both Burl and Nadine Mullins are teachers, but we can't claim Nadine, she teaches at Treece. Pat, at the right of the picture is a sophomore at NEO AGM at Miami. Mr. Mullins claims two degrees, a B.S. from East Central State and M.S. from O.S.U. In his eighth year in our school, he teaches classes in vocational carpentry and sponsors the senior class. The Al Hamils make up this handsome family group. Mr. Hamil is shown with his wife Jenny, and Kenny, seven, who is in the second grade, Linda, three years old, and brand new baby Ronald Joe, who is the center of all activity at the Hamil house right now. Mr. Hamil is our music teacher and has built the music department into one that commands great respect all over the state in the three years he has been at Picher High School. I-Ie received his Bachelor of Music degree at South- eastern State. Honor Teacher and Students To observe American Education Week, the Masons from Ottawa Lodge No. 478 AF 8s AM, Picher, Oklahoma, presented framed certificates of merit to a Teacher of To- day, a girl Student of Today, and a boy Student of Today at a night assembly in the high school auditorium November 12, at 7:30 p.m. The persons honored were named by Lee Jones, secretary of the masonic lodge, at a program which included talks by student representatives of various departments in the high school. Five teachers, five girls, and five boys from the three upper classes of the high school were chosen to be considered for the award. These selections were made by the president of the high school PTA, Mrs. Carthel Foster, the high school principal, Mr. Don Nighbors, the superintendent of schools, Mr. Ray Harrell, and the student coun- cil. Final selections were made by the officers of the lodge. ' H.C. McMullin, history and science, Howard Hudson, speech and English, Mrs. Ray Harrell, commercial department, Burel Mullins, T Sc I Carpentry, and Larry Puryear, science, were the teacher candidates. Students considered for the honor were: Bill Hasseberg, Gary Brown, Lawrence Ralph Leslie, Bridget Seat, and Charlene Peace, seniors, David Johnson, Tony Testerman, Carol Craig, and Sheila Lowery, juniors, and Karen Williams, sophomore. W.A. Brewer, Worshipful Master of the local lodge, explained that the objective was to encourage quality teaching and quality teachers, at the same time to foster student achievement in the public schools. 10 In the Spotlight Dear Mr. Spoon, This book is dedicated to you because you are one of our favorite people. You have our love and respect because you are a good , teacher and a good coach. In both of these very exacting duties, you have proved yourself firm, kind, and very interested in the things ac- complished by the students under your super- vision. We know that you gave up a career in pro- fessional athletics to teach and coach. That you would have been successful is proved by your history fsome highlights given belowy in high school, college, and in the service of your country. We do appreciate what you teach in the classroom and what you have done for our boys and our school in athletics. When you are gone, the memory of you will linger on in the halls and on the playing fields of Picher High School. Sincerely, Zinco Staff From Clippings in an Old Scrapbook Tulsa World, Nov. 27, 1941: Bo Spoon, All- state back from Picher, is the state's highest scorer with 160 points for the season. From a '42 Builders program: Howard QBOJ Spoon is the boy to watch on those fast breaks. The Picher, Oklahoma freshman is the find of the '42 Builder squad. With the 25th Infantry fTropic lightningj Divi- sion on Luzon Island in the Philippines: Corporal James H. Spoon and his unit are responsible for getting the vital artillery ammunition to the front line artillery batteries. The Southwestern Collegian, Sat., Oct. 30, 1948: It was strictly a Bo Spoon show as the reliable quarterbacking ace clicked off three touchdowns to pace the Builders attack. Winfield Daily Courier, Wed., May 5, 1949: It was strictly Spoon's game as he struck out nine, walked three, and in addition to smacking the game's only round tripper, he drove in three South- western run. Late Comers These are the people who entered late. They were not here to get individual pictures made for the Zinco. Everyone here has been in our school before and we are delighted to have them back. Dick Barnett, Picher's own famous jockey, has decided to come back to school this year. He is now a member of the junior class. We are very glad to have Dick back to graduate with the senior class of 1960-61. , These people have come back to us from Grants, New Mexico, Middletown, Ohio, and other places. We hope they never leave us again. W JLINIORS Sheila Lowery S David Johnson SOPHOMORES Peggy Conway S Gerald Breeden ZINCO To finance the publishing of the ZINCO, the staff chose a boy and a girl from each class to do the work of selling yearbooks, last summer's supplement to the 1959 ZINCO, advertising space, names on the alumni page, and accepting contributions. This was a difficult job, but the students in each class lent a hand to their own candidates. Parents also helped with the project, and everyone working together caused the whole thing to be a great success. The contest began September 16 and ended October 16 with the result that 468 yearbooks were ordered from the American Yearbook Company at Hannibal, Mis- sourr. ATTE DANTS The high school boy and girl who brought in the most money gained the well-earned honor of being ZINCO king and queen. This year the honors went to the candidates from the senior class. The runners- up from the junior and sophomore classes acted as attendants. Junior high school gave us our yearbook prince and princess. The seventh grade class proved to be the best salesmen for the year. Attendants to the prince and princess came from the other junior high classes, the eighth and ninth grades. Their rewards, the only reward that can be given in contests of this kind, are these pictures on these pages. The staff, the faculty, and the student body add their grateful thanks to these students for a job well done. NINTH GRADE Jacqueline Smith S K. O. The main interest in our carpentry classes is housing. These projects which we undertake are financed by the people whom we build the houses for. These people supply the material, and we supply the manual labor. The first project of the year was adding a room to the home of Dwight Osborn. The next, and the project which we are working on at the present time is the building of a home for Mr. Dewey Berry. Not only do we learn to become qualified carpen- ters, but we will have learned a vocation which will enable us to take our places in the world as useful members of society, Ronnie Williams P. Perry, C. Barnes, D. Lee, and G. Crockett. ICLUB AUTO MECHANICS What Makes Chevy Run? Every day in our auto shop, boys are answering questions like What does the generator cut out do? and How is a storage battery made? A great many of our boys are completely curious about things that are mechanical. And when a boy gets curious, anything can happen. From all this interest has come the mechanical progress that has done much to help America become great, because every time a question is answered, another pops up that needs answering too. 59 I After a fine season-ticket selling campaign, Bridget Seat, a senior, was crowned Basketball Queen at a ho basketball game with Commerce on January 6. Boys' State is an intensive week's study of Oklahoma Government at the city, county, and state' levels and is inplemented by an educational program divided in three segments. The first phase includes an eight-hour survey course in Oklahoma Government. The course includes a graded examination over the material covered. In additionyto classroom lectures, there are appearances by outstanding Oklahomans representing every department and level of government. The third phase concentrates on learning by doing as nearly to reality as possible. Ralph I-2S1ie We organize our two political parties, the Boomers and the Sooners at the local and state level. We held elections at the City level at a town meeting. We nominated candidates for county and state offices at nomination conventions and elect these nominees at a general election. Once elected we use as many of these officials as possible in actual practice of government. This is the general plan of organization of Oklahoma Boys' State. This summary does not include the social and recreational highlight of Boys' State but rather deals exclusively with Boys' State 's only reason for existence, its educational program. Ralph Leslie In Service Education for Teachers Our teachers are learning too. Courses in Guidance are being offered to all the teachers in the Picher school the first semester by Oklahoma State University through the services of Professor Eli Foster. For several hours each week they work together planning guidance services for the students of our schools to help bring about the fulfillment of the individualg which is the highest goal of our democratic society. The mixing of learning and teaching in the same person is especially important. Indeed it is probably at just the moment of mixing that the touch of magic enters into the hard work of education. John S. Dickey, President Dartmouth College Mt. Eli Foster 68 Student Council A strong foundation is the key to a good house. The Student Council election which was held in October 1959 opened our year's activity. Gary Krokroskia who had served for two years on the Student Council was elected President, Larry Olds--Vice-President, and Carol Craig, Secretary and Treasurer, were elected by the Council as their officers for the year 1959-1960. Two of our projects were the ratification of the new Safety rules for our school and the Teenager March on Polio. Annually each member goes from house to house in Picher soliciting for the Ottawa County Polio Fund. Mr. Larry Puryear is our sponsor again this year. These thoughts are on the minds of all twenty speech students as they hurry from room to room preparing for contest. Contest work for our speech class began early when we went to Phillips University at Enid. We met the most outstanding schools in our class there and after the smoke of battle cleared, our speech department could be seen making a 'strategic retreat' back to Picher with both the Sweepstakes and Debate trophies. The All-School Play, 'Gidget', was presented this year. It proved to be one of the most outstanding successes ever witnessed by our high school. As we' approach the half-way point in this year, we can find more people qualified for state than at any time in our history. We have several defending state champions back again this year and some state champs to be. Most of these people have qualified for state again this year. We have made a real good showing at the speech contests thus far and we hope to do even better in the future. Most of the STUDENTS have shown more interest than ever before in speech and contest work. They appear to be sincerely interested not only in. winning but in the things they are getting out of speech. All the scenes took place at the beach where Gidget fCaro1CraigJ found her true love, Moondoggie Uoe Poorj. The All- School Play was held in the high school auditorium, November 30. Members of the speech department did a play called Antigone, This is a Greek tragedy which stars Sheila Lowery, Phyliss Moore, and Joe Poor. among others. The story is about two brothers who share a kingdom until the elder brother decides to take over. There is a war and both brothers are killed. The uncle, Creon Uoe Poorj, takes over the kingdom. I-le had previously been on the side of the elder brothers, and now that 'they were both dead, he refused to bury the younger brother. The climax of the play comes when Antigone CPhyliss Moorej attempts to buy her brother, she is caught, and is brought before the King who is to order her death. A Greek spirit CShelia Loweryj helps the plot along by explaining just what happens as the play progresses. This play was taken to OCU in Oklahoma City for a speech tournament. Picher High School Librar Through the years the library of our school has gone through several changes. Be- ginning with two small rooms, it has developed into a large single unit containing over four thousand books. An additional reading room helps to provide reference materials such as: dictionaries, encyclopedias, atlases, reader's guides, etc. Because one ofthe main objectives is to encourage the students to read more, the li- brary covers various fields of study by providing books and materials for curriculum needs, specialand individual interests, and for solving personal problems. These are for all grade levels and the different reading abilities. On an average, two hundred books are checked out to students every day. Our library, a center for information, fact finding, and investigation, has well balanced volumes of fiction and non-fiction books. The non-fiction, with over three hundred books concerning science, is classified by the Dewey Decimal System. The fiction books are arranged alphabetically by authors. The library continues to meet the demands of the student body ay acquiring new books each year. Lucile Fargo has said, The Library is a warmly beating heart of the school from which flows to pupils and teachers the red blood of inspiration and discovery. Doug Bryan 77 Senior High 4-H B. For the past several years, the teachers of P..l-I.S. have been trying to set up a program of safety in an effort to prevent harm from coming to any of our students while they are on our campus. Last year, through the endless ef- forts of Mr. Douthitt, who is our sponsor, we were able to set up just such a club. It is called Youth For Safety and is affiliated with the state and national organizations. Through this organization our students were given the responsibility of setting up rules and regulations that drivers would be required to follow while operating their vehicles on school property. It provides that the student members take up our problems of safety and set the penalities for those caught breaking our school rules. Each student driver is required to register his car in the office. The registration blank includes the car license number, the student driver's license number, the make of car, the type of insurance, the student4driver's name and address and the name and address of the owner of the car if it is other than the student. Windshield stickers are given after a check by the T Sc I auto mechanics class for the following: muffler and tailpipe, tie-rods, brakes, lights, wind-shield wipers, and tires. Four members went to a state Youth for Safety meeting in Oklahoma City, October 1. They were Judy V811 Volkenburg, Opal Canady, Jim Sharbutt, and Joe Poor. Joe Poor 79 MI Osborne 1 Bus Drivers This group could be described as faithful, skillful, and perhaps long-suffering as well. Their patience is proved by diligent service each day bringing students to school and taking them safe home again. They are also called upon to take students from various departments on trips of all kinds. It is a lot of fun, and we appreciate their service. .K rr MI. These boys help Mr. Cal Cal Davis Head Custodian Mrs. Morris Davis, our head janitor, to keep our school clean and everything running smoothly. They clean both the high school and grade school buildings. We all greatly appreciate their fine work. BACK ROW: J. Sharbutt, L. Carmack, L. Olds, R. Williams, C. Allen, R. Masters. FRONT ROW: J. CAFETERIA The close of 1959 marked the end of the first full year that the elementary and high school cafeteria have operated as a single unit, and has proved, without doubt that merging the two was a wise and profitable move on the part of the Board of Education and Superintendent Harrell. During the year our cooks prepared over 69,256 balanced meals, of which 19,661 were served at no cost to the students. If all cartons of milk sold during the year were lined up in one line it would reach for 2 '7f1O miles. The success of the Venture is due in large part to the patience and understanding of the high school stu- dents as they come and go from the grade' school M29 de Wolsey, NUS- 162 building. They are to be commended on the fine 'i Mrs- Mau WY, manner in which they have conducted themselves. When there are films to be shown in assemblies, or for various classes in the elementary school or the high school, these boys are called upon to be of service. They also work occasionally in civic clubs or in the churches. They operate the public address system for assemblies and football games. Mr. H. C. McMullin is in charge of the audio-visual room and is very helpful in teaching these boys to run the machines. Danny Hopkins is not pictured in this photo. HIGH SCHOCL P. T. A. J. Bayliss, K. First of all, we started this year off with a new sponsor, Mrs. Cleo Harrell. She has been awonderful leader, and has done everything she can to make this the best year yet. The cheerleaders met in the middle of the summer to start organizing things, and to practice the yells for this sea- son. The uniforms we wear are standard now, for they are in the Pep Club con- stitution. We wear red velveteen dresses lined with white taffeta, and white shoes. These girls were selected at the end of last year, two girls from the sopho- more, junior, and senior classes. Any girl feels it an honor to be chosen to serve as a cheerleader, and we try our best to boost the spirits of our wonder- ful team, and the entire student body. Some of the things the Pep Club has participated in this year are the bon fires, snake dances, and pep rallies be- fore each game. Elaine Hewkin Pep Club cheerleader.. The Oklahoma climate assures us of crisp feel-like-a-million nights and just walking or driving into the 'stadium before that first game gives a sense that glory days are returning. Maybe it's because just about everybody gets into the act. The band in attractive, bright red uniforms provides great music and it is enough to make you stand up and swell with pride when they give out with We 're From Picher High School. The cheering section led by our pert and perky cheerleaders makes a bright spot of color and sound. Zip and flavor and the feeling of competition are added by our good neighbors and opponents across the field. A good number of musicians and fans follow them too. And what would a football game be without a hot dog from our faithful friends, the juniors, at the concession stand? Of course, the most thrilling, heart-filling, and sometimes heart-stopping part of the big show comes when our guys play their guys out there on that green expanse between the goal posts. Every play seems to be more hard- fought and suspense-filled than the one before. Excitement! Drama! Showmanship! Yes, indeed, there is-plenty of all of them on a football night at P.H.S.! 85 Afternoon Scrimmage A E l 1 i I 1 3 h W 5 H i Q, 3' E l l 4 l ! 1 l Senior Players Mr. Thompson on the left and Mr. Spoon on the right Ronnie Willians, Larry Olds, Paul Cook, Gary Krokroskia, Larry Carmack, Jim Abernathy, Doug Carnahan, Joe Poor, Bill Hasseberg, Gary Garrett, Jerry Bayliss. 86 , . .'W-..o,-s- W, ., , ,,.. ., . .,,, ,,.,........W,,,W ,,M,..,.,. ' K Doc Houston is our coach and he taught us our first plays so I am sure that he 's proud of us. When we played our first game this year, it was with Miami. In this game we were ahead in the fourth quarter 14-12. At about this time our B team went in and Miami went ahead and made the final touchdown, which made it 20-14 in favor of Miami. I O Then we had our second and last game with Commerce. In this gaJme'we were ahead of Commerce all through the game. The score of this game was 36-6 in favor of Pi'cher.
