2 we 4? gt' 7755 ' 'mwlgaqc' The delegates from Picher for the 1958 Girls' State and Boys' State were Carolyn Lane and Ray Harrell, Ir. Carolyn held the offices of City Party Committee Member, City Commissioner No. 1, County Commissioner No. 2, and the State office of Judge of the Criminal Court of Appeals. Ray held the offices of Chaplain of the Senate, Boys' State Choir director and a member of the Bar. A question many of you may ask is, What is Girls' State and Boys' State? l'd like to try to explain in a few words what it is and the purpose of it. Girls' State and Boys' State are exactly what their names imply. They are miniature statesg one which is run by the citizens of Girls' State and one by the citizens of Boys' State. ' They are organizations sponsored and directed bythe American Legion Auxiliary. Every summer delegates from various cities in each state attend an eight day Government and Good Citizenship Workshop. Girls' State is held at Oklahoma College for Women at Chickasha and Boys' State on the North Campus of Oklahoma University at Norman. The qualifications for a Girl or Boy Stater are: High moral character, honesty and courage, leadership, scholarship and cooperativeness. The delegates must also be juniors in high school. The main purpose of these two miniature States is the opportunity to learn more about our City, County, and State Government and our individual responsibility as a Citizen. You may be thinking that these Government and Good Citizenship Workshops are all work and no fun. It is work and fun combined in equal parts. To climax the week of work and fun a Girls' State--Boys' State Dance is held. Each year it is alternated and the 1958 Dance was held at Boys' State at Norman. The grand finale of all is when two citizens from each state are selectedto represent Oklahoma at Girls' Nation and Boys' Nation held in Washington D. C. in August of the same summer. Ray Harrell helps Carolyn Lane out of the car after arriving home from Girls' State andBoys' State. A habit all boys should acquire.
