Provisions are made for pupils to develop skills and abilities in the mathematics areas of geometry, and graphic representation and interpretation, elementary analysis, and scientific thinking. EVALUAT IVE CRITERIA and Scientific thinking has come to be the upper most important in today's World of Science. In a world dominated by the idea of getting to the moon and puttingasatellite into space, geometry, physics, and algebra are a way of life. Our mathematics department is made up of Mr. B. Gowin and Mr. R. Harrell. Miss F. Shyrock is in charge of all Junior High School courses. In a world greatly confused by so many issues, it would be well for us to sit down and talk to each other. To discuss our problems and to speak to each other in a language we all understand must be our sincere goal. Rock ,4- Language arts in our high school is focused with an eye upon the future. It intervenes between the more cas- ual, tentative, and round -about experiences of the past, and more controlled and orderly experiences of the future. It gives past experience in that net form which it renders it most available and mostsignificant, most fecund for future experience. The abstrac- tions, generalizations, and classifications which it introduces all have prospective meaning. John Dewey TIME TO EAT!--Mrs. Willa McLain, instructor, Marion King- Working with ones hands is important. When one learns by doing, this particular habit which is formed stays with them all their life. To have an experience working with an object is an important goal to be at- tained by every student. Office Staff The office girl is an important person in the Picher High School. She is given many privileges, however, she has many responsibilities. All clerical and secretarial work is done by these few girls. Phone calls are promptly answered and messages are delivered in strictest of confidence. Their greatest responsibility is to represent our school when they are met by the many visiting patrons, and friends. They are selected on the basis of initiative, scholastic ability and personality. The High School P.T A. is as necessary as High Schools' are, and yet is is difficult to sustain the interest ofpar- ents when their children have made the transfer from the Elementary to the Secondary School level. Some parents feel their children no longer need them but we feelour interest in them at this time is more necessary than ever. Could we Challenge Parents to take more interest in this endeavor which in the end will pro- mote the most important object of our P.T.A., which is to promote the welfare of children and youth in Home, School, Church, and Community. ' - v :aaa 5 2 0 After two months of operating the Elementary and High School Cafeteria as a combined unit, we are both happy and pleased to be able to report that it has been a very successful undertaking. The increased participation on the part of the High School Students together with the decrease in cost of operation has enabled the School Hot Lunch Program, for the first time this year, to operate without using any of the allowable surplus which was carried over from last year. This successful change-over has been made with no appreciable loss of time for our first and second grades and no lost class time for the other four grades. Minor problems have been solved. The courtesy and con- sideration displayed by the high school students who use the grade school cafeteria facilities, is commend- able. Mrs. Ida Mae Cur1ee,Mrs. Mildred Carey, Mrs. Gertrude Nyberg, Mrs. Maude Wolsey. Our very efficient cooks. Student Student Council Sponsor Student Body President Mr' Laffy Puryear James Graves In keeping with the tradition of Picher High School, the Student Council was organized. James Graves was elected to be the Student Body President, a position which he has fulfilled with great leader- ship. Mr. Puryear, the sponsor, has given invaluable guidance toward the program which the student council undertook this year. Through the weekly meetings, the Student Council organized and sponsored the Homecoming Activities. Too, they selected a boy and girl as the student of the month. At the end of this school year a Student of the Year was selected from the eligible candidates. The Student Council undertook to promote a safety program for our school. The safety driving com- mittee was elected which made proposals for improving the driving habits of our student body. This year 150 students from 5 schools participated in the Picher Speech Meet. The student Council served as host for this state speech qualifying contest. Films and intramural activities were also sponsored by the student council. The Student Council wishes to express its appreciation for the fine cooperation which has been given it by the students and faculty. Carolyn held the offices of City Party Committee Member, City Commissioner No. 1, County Commissioner No. 2, and the State office of Judge of the Criminal Court of Appeals. Ray held the offices of Chaplain of the Senate, Boys' State Choir director and a member of the Bar. A question many of you may ask is, What is Girls' State and Boys' State? l'd like to try to explain in a few words what it is and the purpose of it. Girls' State and Boys' State are exactly what their names imply. They are miniature statesg one which is run by the citizens of Girls' State and one by the citizens of Boys' State. ' They are organizations sponsored and directed bythe American Legion Auxiliary. Every summer delegates from various cities in each state attend an eight day Government and Good Citizenship Workshop. Girls' State is held at Oklahoma College for Women at Chickasha and Boys' State on the North Campus of Oklahoma University at Norman. The qualifications for a Girl or Boy Stater are: High moral character, honesty and courage, leadership, scholarship and cooperativeness. The delegates must also be juniors in high school. The main purpose of these two miniature States is the opportunity to learn more about our City, County, and State Government and our individual responsibility as a Citizen. You may be thinking that these Government and Good Citizenship Workshops are all work and no fun. It is work and fun combined in equal parts. To climax the week of work and fun a Girls' State--Boys' State Dance is held. Each year it is alternated and the 1958 Dance was held at Boys' State at Norman. The grand finale of all is when two citizens from each state are selectedto represent Oklahoma at Girls' Nation and Boys' Nation held in Washington D. C. in August of the same summer. Ray Harrell helps Carolyn Lane out of the car after arriving home from Girls' State andBoys' State. A habit all boys should acquire. Secretary JEANETTE CROCKETT Jen Quote: Shoot aMon.key! At 3:00 a.m. on the morning ofJanuary 12, 1959, members of the Picher High School Band boarded the bus for Oklahoma City. This was the result of the ac- ceptance of an invitation for the Picher Band to represent Ottawa County at the 'Inaugural Parade of our governor, J. Howard Edmond- son.
