Girls' Glee Club The singing of the Girls Glee Club was an lmpresslve feature of thls year's Christmas Candlelight service This was the first appearance of the vear for the glrls who sang a program of re 1g1ous numbers Some com posltlons were sung a cappella and others were sung Wlth organ accom paniment Each year the Glrls' Glee Club has enlarged under the guidance of Mr Sample and th1s year s organization numbered seventy four singers The girls made two trips this year one to West Ch ster and one to Philadelphia where they sang on a Sunday broadcast over WFIL The girls at the Chester County choral festival were commenced on both thelr ap earance and their singing by the festival adjudlcators Thls event was held in the Phihps Memor1alAud1tor1um at State Teachers Col ege Apr1l25 1938 perfoi mance and for their final appearance the girls sang at the Baccalau reate Servlce The third Chrlstmas Candlellght SBTVICB of Worship presented by the P H S muslc department ws 1th W S Sample Jr director was presented 1n the Memorial J unlor high school audltorlum Sunday afternoon Decem ber 19 1937 at 3 P M The combination of the hlgh school orchestra the glr s glee club and a rellglous play meant that the P H S mus1c depart ment had again presented an impressive Chrlstmas program The drama tlc feature was the play Babouscka ' which dramatlzed the Russian Legen dary figure of Babouscka a story of Woman s search for lost opportunlty 1n quest of truth was presented by the followlng cast Babouscka Margaret Faust Natasha Petrovna peasant woman Julia Worobetz Betty Campbell Dorothy Shutes Marya Andreyevna her slster ln law Olga daughter of Marya Andreyevna Stepan young son of Marya Joseph Devun Neighbor Trolska Dorothy Chrlsman F fly th . 1. . . - L' ' u ,L o 4 -' . Boys' Glee Club Fftyt The Boys Glee Club an organwatlon of forty members meets but once a week durmg the Tuesday act1v1t1es perlod to delve lnto the enJo3 ment of slngmg some part songs for men s VOICQS The mam projects of the club for the year were preparmg for ltS performance at the Annual Sprlng Concert whlch was l'eld early 1n May and partlclpatlon ln the MUSIC department radlo broadcast over W F I L the first Sunday 1n May In add1t1on to the regular major musrc groups a number of smaller groups were formed the more lmportant ones belng a speclal orchestra of ten play ers a glrls' tr1p e trlo a strmg quartet a brass sextet a m1xed VOICC ensemble a saxophone qumtet and a sw mg band Sn: students partlclpated IH the Southeastern DlStT1Ct orchestra held at Upper Darby SIX performed vuth the Southeastern Dlstrlct band at Ambler Flfteen sang ln the Southeastern D1str1ct Chorus at Berwyn and two P H S muslc stddents were honored by havmg therr apphcatlons accepted by the All State Bard at Jersey Shore whlch was under the dlrec tlon of Ernest Wllllams and EPIC Lerdzen All of these D1str1ct and State festu als were sponsored by the Pennsylvama School Muslc ASSOC1atlOH of wh1ch P H S IS a member The muslc department sponsored Blrch the famous maglclan and h1s companv 1n a benefit performance for the band A gala mdoor clrcus Wlth professlonal entertamers for the mam show and slxteen Slde show attractlons bv th P H S students was presented on Frlday Aprll 1 1938 The Beglnnlng Band numbered twenty two th1s year From It wlll come the play ers who wrll take the places of the senrors who graduated from the mstrumental organlzatlons thls year The Band Glrls Volce ensemble and Instrumental ensemble of twelve was el101b e to compete 1n the state final contests at Grove C1ty Pennsyl van1a by vlrtue of wmmnff the d1str1ct contests but was unable to go be cause of the expense and dlstance 1nvolved Y 1 l W, l . v Q . , , L T, . . . . . . . . 7- 7 7 . . , . . . r A' L c A , A , , A Y A r - I ! v 1 . .
