Lately the Coyote has been in danger of becoming extinct. Skyscrapers and heavy traffic has made the Coyote vulnerable and weak, frail and fragile. The Coyote grew strong and lived peacefully for many years until in 1939 the Mustang moved in and the Coyote happily shared the territory with the mascot of the North. As time passed more mascots moved in to share the territory that was once ruled by the Coyote alone: The Thunderbirds in 1949, the Rebels in 1954, the Trojans in 1954, the Falcons in 1957, the Bobcats in 1957, the Lions in 1962, the Black Panters in 1963, the Longhorns in 1964, and the Bruins in 1972, The territory was getting overcrowd ed with mascots and there were not enough resources to go around for everybody. Con- sequently, the Board of Mascots, which was established to direct the various activities of the mascots, had to make a decision, The macots also realized they all couldn't survive in this territory and some had to vanish, They all protested about their share, but one or two or three would have to give up their share, which one would it be? opening THE UNDISP TED LEADER OF TH S0 THWEST ,ix Students relax in front of the cafeteria. The fight went on and on until finally it came down to three that had to give up their share of the territory. KTVK basketball team congratulate each other after defeating P, U faculty. On Friday, Novermber 20, l98l a special assembly was called to officially announce to the students and faculty the closure of Phoenix Union High School. The vote came during the meeting the night before H. . . during which tears flow- ed on the board and in an audience which jammed the board room. The assembly was very emotional and many students could not hold back the tears. Dr, Jones, Principal of Phoenix Union, explained the reason for the closure. The Proper- ty which Phoenix Union sits on -is very valuable and if sold would help to balance the budget, said Dr. Jones. Other rea- sons cited for the closure were low en- rollment fl, 2007 and the dropout rate 430703. Reasons were little comfort to students who traditionally had family and friends graduate from Phoenix Union and were looking forward to doing the same. When the football team started the season, there were about 25 players, but after three games the number of players began to drop. With a team of only nine players left the freshman football team was forced to cancel its schedule. But they didn't give up so easily. About four or five frosh players were asked if they would like to play on the varsity team. They were Earl Callaway, Kenneth Thomas, Russell Moore and David Wiley, who finished their season with the varsity. Newman - Proofreader As we come to the end of the school year we find that we no longer ask the question 'Will Phoenix Union be closed? The sc oo board decided to close both Phoenix Union and East High School Le-t's also not forget they will close West High academically making it a four year vocational school Phoenix Union Students and faculty have fond memories of the Home of the Champions When the decision to close us was handed down it was a hard blow to so many of the students One of the yearbook staff members feeling the blow began taking pictures of her friends and the school to preserve memories The staff then decided to add more color and black and white pages to this book. We paid special attention to student life, trying to let all have the opportunity to show their smiles. We've worked very hard to try to meet all our deadlines and we tried to catch the Phoenix Union spirit on film. I am not happy to see Phoenix Union close, but the board members have made up their minds. lf truly hope that when people look at this last yearbook, it will unlock a lot of happy memories.
